A Mother's Love -
Chapter 2
Little Wanderers, in black letters. She pauses for a moment and looks sadly down at the basket as tears fill her eyes, but she has made her decision and she knew it was the only thing she could do. She walks up the driveway and stopped at the bottom of a staircase that led up to a covered area and two gray steel doors.
Looking at the basket once again she said in a low loving voice,” I love you, and this is the best I can do for you”. Slowly she ascended the stairs gripping onto the red painted cast iron hand rail that led up to the door.
Inside her heart was being ripped apart and her mind questioned if what she was doing was for the best. It seemed to take forever to ascend the stairs to the covered landing, but finally she stood there facing the two gray doors. She found a dry spot in the covered landing and set the basket down gently then knelt beside it.
Drawing back the blanket for one long last look at its’ precious contents revealed a baby. Staring longingly at the child she tries to memorize all its’ features and the soft sounds it makes at it stares back at her with large brilliant blue eyes. She softly touches his face with her hand then gently kisses his cheek. Tears flowed freely from her eyes that she could no longer hold back. She wipes them away and reaches into the pockets of her coat and withdraws two objects. One is a note that she tucks in under the blanket, and the other is a book title Peter Pan which she places also under the blanket. Once again she softly kisses his face and the child reach out and touches her. Somehow she understood the child knew this was goodbye. She descended the staircase and walked down the driveway never looking back, though in her heart she wanted to turn and run back and retrieve the child. She fought the desire for she knew this had to be. It was the only way the child could survive and lead a somewhat normal life. She walked off into the cold rain with tears in her eyes and never looked back.
