Chapter 99

The door was not closed all the way. It was as if Sage had purposely left it open for her.

Entering Sage’s room, Leah said softly, “Sage, are you still awake?”

"Yeah."

Closing the book in her hands, Sage sat upright, straightening her back, and looked at Leah."Anything? Come on inside.”

Leah, dressed in her cotton nightgown that looked thread wom from overwashing, walked over toSage. Leah found herself taking careful steps across the expensive carpet as she did not wish todirty it.

*Come, sit here,” Sage said to Leah. She handed her a scarf. “I don't usually tum on the heater, so itmight be cold for you here. Take this and wrap it around yourself. I don't want you to catch a cold.”“Thank you.”

Leah thanked her politely and sat upright in the chair with her hands placed on her knees.

Sage could not help but chuckle at the sight of Leah's careful behavior.

Three years ago, she had learned from Leah how to behave in a gentle and polite manner. Sagethought that she had done a good job judging from how she was able to trick Jace for three years.Sage who had always been cold and distant right from the start was suddenly laughing and thisstartled Leah. “Sage?”

“Oh, it's nothing, I was simply reminded of something interesting.”

The laughter in her eyes faded away, leaving only traces of coldness. “What is it that you want totalk about?”

Leah stared at Sage and asked, “Where have you been all these years, Sage? Have you been doingwell?”

Something flickered across Sage’s eyes. She did not expect Leah to ask about this right from thestart.

“I went to another city to experience a different kind of life.”

Sage asked, “What about you? How have you been?”

“The usual.” Leah smiled and went on, “It had always been this way, and I've already gotten used toit. It doesn't matter if I'm doing good or not.”

Sage looked at her. “I heard that your dad got himself another wife.”

The light in her eyes dimmed. Looking down at her hands, Leah answered, “Yeah, she's quite pretty.Oh, and she’s the champion of a beauty pageant contest.”

Although she had a smile on her face, Leah sounded sarcastic.

Looking at Leah, Sage sighed silently as she thought that every family has its own set of problems.Sage's grandfather spent most of his life living in poverty, and he had three sons. Among his sons, the eldest, Sawyer Norah was the most capable and had founded Norah Group which made him asuccessful businessman, but he had sadly passed away young.

The second of the three sons, Braxton Norah, was an accountant, and after years of buttering up thehigher-ups, he was promoted t o the level of manager at an international company. However, hestarted getting jealous of Sawyer.

As for the youngest, Zane Norah, he was ambitious but lazy. He spent his days living on the moneyhis brothers had given him, and he had spent money impulsively. Not only that, but he alsochanged his wives like he changed his clothes

Sage recalled how her mother had commented about her two uncles being useless.

“Your new stepmother doesn't treat you well,” Instead of asking Leah, Sage stated as a matter offact.

She had looked into Leah's history and found out that ever since Zane had gotten married to thisnew wife, Leah had no say in the family. Not only was she kicked out of her house, but she nearlyhad to drop out of college.

Leah mocked, “She is older than me by four to five years. She's got a pretty face and she’s good atmanipulating people. I can't — compete with her so I decided to stay away from her.”

Sage sighed silently. Leah's new stepmother must have made Leah's life hard for her.

"Enough about me, Sage. I came to talk to you about something important.”

Taking a glance at the door, Leah moved her chair closer toward Sage, lowered her voice, andwhispered, “I came here only because

Yeva wanted me to. She is plotting something against you. She wants me to join hands with her toget rid of you and I was asked to first gain your trust.”
