Chapter 46 –

Sophie's Second Chance Mate

I hate being on guard duty down in the cells, it's dark and dingy and the smells just make it all the worse. Thankfully I don't have to guard down here too often, usually only when it's deemed necessary and today is one of those days. Between us already having Lola and Rowan down here, we also have Shane, Robbie and several warriors out searching for Bonny's sister and father so high-ranking and strong wolves are very much needed as we can't risk them escaping.

One thing that I'm thankful for is that when Nick took over as Alpha he made some changes around the pack house and lands including the cells. Whereas before we would have to sit out in the cell area and have to deal with them constantly trying to talk us into letting them go or having She-wolves thinking they could try and seduce their way out of there, now we have cameras in every cell and the hallway which we monitor from the guard room.

It's great because we don't have to be around them but we can still monitor them and sometimes we've even heard some confessions without them realizing which is what we are hoping will happen now. Rowan and Lola teamed up to try and kill our future Luna so if they were dull enough to think that they could get away with that then maybe they would be dull enough to talk more about their plans and make things easier for us.

The door to the guard room opening brings me back to the present and I can't help but smile when Omega Suzzy comes walking into the room with her arms full of goodies for us. I go to stand up to help her when the most incredible smell hits all of my senses and stirs my wolf Theo from his nap. "What's that smell?" I practically growl out the words as my wolf tries to take over control but I manage to hold him back. I look at Suzzy and she gasps as the biggest smile appears on her face. "Oh, my goddess!" She cries excitement pouring out of her while I just stand there confused as fuck.

"MATE!" Theo suddenly growls all while frightening the shit out of me. Wait... what did he just say? "Suzzy, who else is with you?" She keeps smiling but I don't miss the look of panic in her eyes like she just remembered something or more like someone. "She's out there but he won't leave her alone... I was coming in to get one of you but then you... Oh, my goddess, I can't believe this!"

I don't wait to hear anymore instead I head straight for the door with Ryan and Cole right behind me. We quickly round the corner and reach the cells and then I stop in my tracks when I see her and I swear my fucking heart stops beating for a second. She's my mate? How is this possible? How didn't I know before today?"

"We are her second chance mate. She had to meet that asshole first." Theo sounds happy but more than anything relieved.

"Did you know?" Is this the reason for his behavior lately?

"I suspected that we were going to meet out mate but I didn't know it was her, I didn't know anything for definite so I didn't say anything in case I was wrong."

"It's ok, Theo. You didn't know. All that matters is that we know now. We've found our mate, Theo and we ain't letting her go!"

"Dam right! Now, let's go get our girl away from that twat bag!"

I couldn't agree more and quickly make my way over to her but some of my happiness slips away when I hear the next few words out of his mouth. "You are a worthless piece of shit. You should be honored I would even entertain the idea of being with you. On second thoughts, I don't think I could do it. Imagine waking up to your face every day... Fuck, it would cause some night terrors."

I quicken up my pace as he continues to insult my mate and for a second I feel a little mad at her for not defending herself but then I realize that she doesn't need to because she has me now and I'm more than happy to do it for her. This prick has hurt her enough, she doesn't have to speak to him if she doesn't want to, not that he will be able to speak by the time I'm finished with him. "You will regret this day when you're old and lonely, you'll regret not letting me out of here." I want to laugh at how pathetic he sounds but my anger overrides it.

I'm fucking furious at how he's speaking to my girl but somehow I manage to hold it in as I step up to my mate and stand so close to her back that I can feel the heat from her back lacing my chest. My mate is tiny and short which allows me to look directly over her head and straight at the soon-to-be dead wolf. "Speak to my mate like that again and I'll rip your fucking face off!"

I feel her tense up as the cutest gasp leaves her mouth while Rowan's eyes start bouncing between my mate and mine. "What the fuck are you on about?" He's pissed but it only makes me smile. "You heard me." I somehow manage to keep my tone calm even when all I want to do right now is end him but I can't, not yet anyway. I take another step forward until my mate's back is firmly pressed against my chest and just about manage to hold in a groan at how perfect it feels to just touch her in the simplest of ways. "Get away from my mate!" He growls making Theo growl in my head but I just laugh at him. "That's where you are wrong, Rowan. She was your mate but you were too stupid to see what you had right in front of you. I should thank you for being a dick and rejecting her because now she's my mate and I get to spend the rest of my life with one of the best people that I have ever known."

"Why are you pretending to want her when we both know that you will reject her as soon as you can? If you ask me, you are even more of a prick than me, At least I told her the truth from the start unlike you who's going to give her false hope and drag her along until you're bored and then reject her. No... wait... I have it. It's a bet, isn't it? You already knew that she was your mate and you have some sort of bed going... that's it isn't it... now that I can respect my friend."

Anger instantly burns my veins as I feel my mate, my Sophie tense up once more and go to step away from me but I'm not having any of that so I hock my arm around her stomach and hold her firmly to my body. "I'm going to enjoy ending you. I can't wait-" My words are interrupted by the sound of the door at the cell entrance opening and then loud protests start to bounce off the walls just seconds before Robbie, Shane, and several warriors come stomping down the stairs with Bonny's father and sister and I feel relief that they have been caught.

As Shane approaches us he stops and takes in his surroundings as Robbie and Joe get our new prisoners comfy. "What's going on? I have a feeling that I have missed something." He looks at me and I know I'm sporting a shit-eating grin but I can't stop myself because despite the current situation we currently replace ourselves in I couldn't be happier right now. He gives me a questioning look before looking down and noticing my arm that is still wrapped around Sophie's stomach.

"What's going on? Are you ok, Soph?" He shows genuine concern which I appreciate, all of my brothers, and all of my family have always had a soft spot for Sophie myself included and we have always been protective of her so I think that he will be incredibly happy to know that I'm her mate, that one of us gets to be the one to protect her for the rest of her life. I know that I am and I'm even more happy that I'm the one that gets to do it. If truth be told I've always had a more than friend soft spot for her but I wouldn't start something with her knowing that one day I'd replace my mate. I couldn't hurt her like that so to know that I am her mate and I can be with her has me on cloud nine.

"I'm ok, Beta Shane." She gives him a slight nod as she tries to sound calm but I don't miss the slight wobble in her voice or how her body stiffens up once more just before the door to the cells starts making its usual joyful noise just seconds before Nick, Bonnie, Lily, Tony, and Alpha Harold appear as they make their way down the steps and head straight for us.
