Fourteen

I know what this weekend is for Sera. Her eighteenth birthday. She’ll meet her wolf, Athena, whom she’s been looking forward to meeting, and she’ll have a fun weekend celebrating turning eighteen with her parents.

I pull into her parent’s driveway at eight-ten Monday morning. This day will be difficult for Sera, but she must have it without my influence. I honk the horn to let Sera know I’m here and turn the music up when one of my favourite eighty’s songs begins to play.

“Good morning,” I smile when Sera opens the door and slides into the passenger seat.

“Hi,” she replies.

“How was your weekend?”

“It was good. I had my birthday, and my parents took me shopping,” Sera tells me, smiling back.

“Really? Happy birthday. I didn’t get you anything. I’m sorry. What did your parents get you?”

“Uh, a necklace,” Sera says, fingering the necklace sitting under the v of her collarbone. I take a quick look and smile.

“Oh, that is beautiful; my sister would love that,” I gush.

“Your sister?”

“Yeah. Luna. She loves everything to do with the moon. It’s her thing,” I tell Sera.

“I didn’t know you had a sister.”

“I have many sisters and brothers. I come from a huge family,” I tell her. This is true. There are many of us, each with different roles and powers. Luna is one of my favourite sisters, though. I drive down the street, and when I replace an empty spot, I parallel park.

“I have to see Luna today, so I won’t be at school,” I tell Sera.

“Oh. Okay. You didn’t have to pick me up, you know,” Sera replies, giving me a sorrowful look. Sera is such a lovely girl; I wanted her day to start with something nice.

“It’s all good. I’ll probably arrive for fifth period, so I’ll see you then,” I tell her. I watch as Sera nods before getting out of the car. I give her a wave and then use the indicator to tell cars I intend to pull back into the street. When I see a space between traffic, I pull out of my spot and head home.

As soon as I walk into the foyer of my house, I open a portal to Corinth. I feel like I haven’t been here for years when it’s only been a few months. I search for my girls- Krystal, Daphne and Nora- and replace them sitting together in the temples’ Eatery and chatting. They don’t notice me when I walk in, and because of this, I take the opportunity to eavesdrop on their conversation. I smile as I listen to them argue about family things. They’ve wanted to go to Koper Tigh for a holiday for decades and are arguing about which part of the planet they want to visit.

With my food tray, I walk over to my fates and sit at their table.

“Moira!” Krystal smiles as I sit. The other two grin when they see me, and all three get up and give me a hug.

“Hi. What’s going on?” I ask.

“What is not going on,” Nora says.

“Hey! I want to have some fun while we’re there! What is wrong with wanting a little eye candy on our vaycay?” Daphne states.

“Then maybe you should visit Terra Edo,” I reply, smiling as I think of the hunky men on that planet.

“The werewolf planet?” Krystal asks. I nod.

“Talking about werewolves…” Nora begins.

“Please… I’m not sure….” Krystal complains. I look over at Nora and Krystal, raising an eyebrow.

“A white wolf has just come into her powers,” Nora explains. I nod. Depending on what planet they’re from, white wolves are rare and have special powers.

“Where? Terra Etu?” I ask. Krystal nods. Terra Etu is the planet my mission with Sera and the Clevedon Pack is on. There are many planets and many realms. Terra Edo is the planet where werewolves originated. All the Terra’E’ planets are in the same realm, except the planet we are on now, Terra Eti. Terra Eti is the fairy planet and the realm where most of my siblings and I grew up. This is why Corinth, the temple of fates, is located here and why we employ fairies to work with us.

“What is her power?” I ask.

“She can see threads between people,” Krystal states. This makes me stop eating and look up at Krystal. Krystal was an ether fairy before she ascended, and her role as a fate is to dispense the thread of life that Daphne spins. While she dispenses her thread, she uses her ether power to will the thread in its proper path. If this wolf can see threads, it means one of my fates will descend back into the wheel of life, and this wolf with ascend in her place.

“Werewolves live a long time, Krys,” Daphne says, touching her hand reassuringly.

“Yeah, I know… but… I like it here, that’s all…”

“Doesn’t mean she’ll be replacing you. I’m the oldest here. She could replace me,” Nora says, stabbing her meat.

“I just wish we could all stay together, that’s all. I don’t want to go back and not remember you all,” Krystal says. I don’t say anything; I just nod. I get it. I’ve had many fates work for me. Most are reincarnated from my original fates and come back to me eventually, but sometimes we have an odd one who has had many good lives and is rewarded with stints of immortality.

“How long?” I then ask Nora.

“I see another ninety or so years in her. I doubt anything will change….” Nora says.

“Although there have been many white wolves born on Terra Etu of late. There might be a reason,” Daphne says, looking pointedly at me. I just shrug. There is a plan, yes. But whether what will happen does happen is not up to me. I just make sure there is a backup plan.

“I should go see my sister,” I hum, looking at my empty plate. Nora nods understandingly.

“Today’s the day?” Daphne asks. I nod. Yup. Today Sera’s thread is cut. My girls hug me goodbye, and I walk away from the table, opening a portal to Luna.

“You’re back!” my sister smiles, looking at me. She stands out on her veranda, looking out at the forest beyond.

“Yeah. Today’s the day. Do you want to come?” I ask. Luna wrings her hands and looks at me, and nods.

“Yes. I want to be there.”

“Okay,” I say, opening another portal. We walk through, our view instantly shifting to the backfield of the high school I had been attending the last few weeks.

“Wow, look at my wolves,” Luna smiles as she sees her children begin to gather in front of her. Although she is smiling, there is pain in her eyes. I nod. Luna was gifted something good when her lover was turned into a werewolf. Werewolves are her legacy.

We watch the teen wolves from the school gather in front of their leaders. Catherine looks smug as she watches them gather, her arms clasped around Zach’s territorially. I see Blake and Logan stand to the side with Yvonne and Jaymie.

“What are we waiting for?” Jaymie asks. Yvonne and Logan shrug, whereas Blake just looks around for Sera.

Luna walks to my side and grabs my hand, and I squeeze it as we watch. A pink portal opens, and a fay walks through. The fairy is wearing a crisp black suit with the symbol of Thanatos embroidered on his left breast.

“Goddesses,” The fairy greets, kneeling at our feet when he sees us.

“Please stand,” Luna replies. I smile. Unlike some of our sisters, Luna does not like the formalities given to her because of her status, which is why I like her.

“I am Christopher. I work for your brother,” Christopher greets.

“How is he?” I ask. Our brother, Thanatos, is the god of death and is one of our youngest siblings.

“Up to no good, as always,” Christopher smiles. Luna and I nod. Thanatos is still young at heart. He enjoys partying and drinking and has yet to settle down.

“Please, can we have quiet?” Felix Calleigh, Clevedon Pack’s next Beta, asks.

“Oh,” Luna smiles, looking at the wolf. I feel sorry for my sister as she looks at her high-blood wolves with hope. The crowd of wolves quietens, but soft murmuring comes from those at the back.

“Thank you for coming today,” Zachary Lachlan, the next Alpha, begins, “I would like to call forward our guest of honour, Sera Mayvic!” Zach announces, a smug look on his face. I walk over to my sister and hug her.

“He’s going to do it in front of his pack, isn’t he?” Luna says softly, a tear falling down her face. I can only nod.

“Oh God,” Luna whimpers as we watch Sera being pulled forward into the centre of the circle.

“No!” Sera protests again. I shake my head and look for Blake and Logan, who are standing at the front of the circle. They look disappointed at what is happening, and I’m pleased to see that even Yvonne, Jaymie and some other wolves look terrified for Sera.

“Please, no,” Sera begs. She looks broken, standing there in the circle. Luna pulls out of my arms and attempts to move toward the crowd. I try to keep her with me, but she shakes her head.

“No, Moy, I have to. I have to,” she says, walking through the crowd and standing next to Sera, “I have called you all here to make a very important announcement!” Zach yells, his voice ringing clearly across the crowd.

“Z-Zach?” Sera speaks. He doesn’t look at her, and I watch in horror as Catherine walks towards Sera and slaps her.

“That’s Alpha Zach to you, Omega,” Catherine sneers. She then spits on Sera’s face before returning to Zach.

“I’m sorry, bunny, she made me do it,” Catherine whines, snuggling into Zach’s side. Zach smiles at Catherine and mouths, it’s okay to Catherine before facing the crowd again.

“This morning, I had the unfortunate revelation that this thing, this omega before us, is my mate!” Zach scoffs. People begin to laugh, and Luna turns and looks at each one, glaring at them.

“Lo…” Sera starts, beginning to walk toward Logan and Blake.

“Hold her still!” Zach orders. Cameron and Felix immediately run up to Sera, each grabbing an arm tightly with their hands and turning her towards her mate and ex-best friend.

“I have called you here today to tell you that I will not put the burden of this thing on you by making her Luna. Sera Mayvic is not Luna material. She is not strong; she is weak. Sera, as Luna will only bring our pack down!” Zach loudly states. My sister shakes her head at each statement Zach makes.

“Moira, I hope you have a plan for this,” she seethes, pain in her eyes as she looks at me. I just nod. I do have a plan; unfortunately, this is part of it. It has to be done.

“Please… don’t…” Sera begs. I watch as Zach ignores his mate’s pain, instead kissing Catherine lovingly on her forehead.

“Pl-please…” Sera begs again. Zach turns and glares at Sera.

“I, Zachary Mason Lachlan, future Alpha of the Clevedon Pack, reject Sera Mayvic as my mate and my Luna of Clevedon Pack!” he yells.

Sera buckles in pain, and Luna is quick to rub her back. I know if she could take Sera’s pain, she would.

“Pathetic,” Catherine scoffs, watching her old friend grip the ground in agony. Several pack members run toward Sera and take the opportunity to give her a last kick, but this goes unnoticed by Sera as her body breaks from the mating thread being ripped from her body.

“Let’s go celebrate!” Cameron Jones, the pack’s future Gamma, yells. People stop their actions and follow their leaders to leave Sera, whose body still thrashes about from the pain.

Athena’s spirit then jumps from her body, and I know it’s only time now before Nora cuts Sera’s life thread for good. Sera buckles again in pain, and I watch her body collapse while her spirit remains on all fours. Sera stands and looks down at her body.

I watch as Logan and Blake walk up to Sera’s body.

“Sera? Sera?” Blake says, crouching down next to her.

“Blake, I think… I think... she’s gone, Blake,” Logan says, placing his fingers underneath Sera’s jaw to feel her pulse.

“No! Please, goddess, no!” Blake cries.

“I’m sorry, Blake,” Logan says, touching Blake’s shoulder.

I feel tears begin to form in my eyes as I watch Blake and Logan check on her. Christopher steps forward then, approaching Sera’s spirit.

“It’s your time,” Christopher tells her. Sera doesn’t respond, instead looking at Luna, who is busy patting Athena and telling her what a strong girl she is.

“This is Athena,” Luna tells Sera with a smile.

“It’s your time,” Christopher says again.

“What?” Sera replies, turning to look at me. I give her a weak smile.

“I’m sorry this happened to you, Sera,” I tell her.

“Who? What... Who are you?” Sera asks.

“I’m Fate. The Goddess of Fate, to be exact. I know you may have wanted to continue your life like many rejected wolves do, but that was not your destiny, Sera. You are part of a much bigger plan,” I tell her. Sera just looks at me.

“I would have liked to have had a mate who loved me, wanted me. I’m grateful that I at least got to meet my wolf,” Sera says. I nod.

“You will get that chance, I promise. Just not in this life,” I tell her.

“I didn’t expect it… but… deep down, I hoped, you know?”

I nod.

“This is Christopher. He works for our brother. He’ll take you to the wheel,” Luna smiles, walking up to us with Athena.

“Will it… be okay? Will it hurt?” Sera asks.

“You’ll be fine. Athena will even go with you,” Chris assures her. Sera looks at both me and Luna, and we nod in agreement.

“All right. Thank you, Moira, for everything,” Sera says, giving me a hug.

“Me too!” Luna grins, walking over and hugging Sera as well.

“It’s your time,” Christopher says again, offering Sera his hand. She takes it and waves goodbye to us before turning and walking away.
