Dweller -
Chapter 16
The hideout is located in the slums, on the outside it looks like it is only one building but actually we rule over a huge section. Marking our territory and proving how big and strong our group is. People are standing and sitting outside the hideout. They are all talking to each other or playing card games. As we slowly approach the building, they quiet down and stare, quietly whispering to each other, some nodding her heads as we pass.
We walk through the door and are immediately opened up into a big room where people are hanging about a lot more than outside, this area was more of the mess room. Where people would share stories and sometimes eat. Everytime I have been in here I haven’t actually seen anyone eating. The same thing happened as we walked across the room, we walked down the main path right down the middle of the room. Making everyone notice us and go quiet, pointing and whispering.
“Isn’t that Stalker?” I hear one of them whisper.
“If she's here the boss must want something important, not to mention that Sam is also here” The room stays quiet even long after we leave. Finally we get to the bosses room, and walk right in with the door already open.
Inside boss was leaning over the table looking at a laid out map. It slowly curled up at the ends resulting in heavy books being placed down at the corners to stay down.
This room was the bosses personal room aws well as the planning room. It was covered in green and black flags, matching the group's colors. Posters boards were hung up on every wall, they were then covered with pictures of missing people or convicts that have a huge bounty over their head.
She notices we enter the room and waves us over, I walk over to the other side of the table. I look down and notice it was from another city around a couple of days away from this one. I got bored looking down at all of the markers. And finally tried to figure out what she needed us here for.
“Soooooo….” I say dragging it out. “Why are we here, and what does this have to do with supernatural beings?” I say with a questioning tone.
She had on one of her thoughts her face with her hand on her chin as she was staring stonily down at the sprawled out map. She flicks her hand back at the map.
“What's wrong with the plan below?” She says never take her eyes off it.
“Well” I say starting out not even having to think too hard about what was wrong with the plan. “You are thinking too hard about prioritizing the safety of whoever you're sending. Going this path would be much more quickly and safer.” I state confidently, pointing at another path.
“Why does she ask?” Curiosity brimming.
“Well because you're thinking about keeping them safe. The guards aren’t going to think that a bunch of children are going to break into this city therefore they aren’t going to heavily guard this area. And if they are the rotations we'll leave these locations open just enough to get in.” I explain as I love the small wooden creatures across the map pointing out where they could go.
“Hmm” Is all she says before finally looking up at me.
“You know you should come around here more. Your great help when it comes to planning.” she says trying to flatter me, which makes me even more nervous and suspicious.
“Okay get to the point, what are you trying to avoid telling me?” I say slowly letting my frustration show. I cross my arms in front of my chest. Trying to express my slowly rising anger with how she's avoiding the topic.
“So I had got some intel claiming that a group of vampires and werewolves were forming, they said about 20 were spotted. And seeing how you have a hate for these two groups specifically I thought you were the perfect person for the job. However your job isn’t to wipe them out, it's only to figure out why they're there. That's nothing else. Do you understand?” As she slowly uses a more serious tone.
“Understand, is this a solo mission or will there be others?” I ask secretly hoping it's just me.
“You’ll be going with some of the other kids.” She claims as she slowly walks away turning her back towards us. She walks over to one of the many other tables and grades a compass. She walks over towards me and puts it in my hand. Before she addresses me again.
“Also they seem to be meeting in an abandoned part of the city with a lot of destroyed and crumbling houses. Now this job just suits you perfectly.” laughing as she says it, replaceing it humorous. She continues on and explains to me the plan and keeps pointing out that I am not to advance and that if we are somehow spotted to return right away. She tells me who I’m working with and then dismisses me telling me to be ready tomorrow at noon and that we would be leaving then.
I looked at Sam and then back at the boss, I nodded my head and left. I had a feeling that there was something more than this, something deep in my chest had a feeling that this would go horribly wrong. But with nothing to off on why this felt wrong I had no choice but to follow the plan. The people I was going with weren’t really experienced in this field, keeping me at a disadvantage, meaning that I couldn’t get too close as we had a higher chance of getting spotted. I would just have to wait and see what tomorrow would bring. I walked out of the camp and back to my territory.
