Chapter 13 Scars

Helene had burst into tears as well. She walked over and tenderly wrapped her arms around Carlisle, wanting to use what little warmth she had to comfort this man.

Maybe the two could keep each other warm.

In some ways, Helene envied Carlisle a little. After all, at one point he received the love of his parents. She didn’t even know hers.

When she was a child, she was afraid of festivals and big celebrations. She even hated them at times. Those were the places where parents took out children to have fun, buy new clothes, and eat food. Maybe some were celebrating birthdays or other occasions. While the other children were out having fun, Helene was forced to stay at home to help her grandmother.

She hated it. Hated her childhood. One of the worst parts that she could remember was how she had never eaten a birthday cake growing up. Every time she passed by a cake shop, she looked inside to see parents choosing birthday cakes for their children. Oh, how desperately she wanted to be that child!

If there was a next life, she hoped that she would be born into a loving family with parents who could care for her. That she could eat cake every birthday, and grin from ear to ear as her parents sang to her.

A siren suddenly blared in the distance, the noise piercing her ears and bringing her back to reality. It was a weather alert

from the coast guard. Large waves began crashing against the hull of the boat, creeping up a little further every time. Then, the boat suddenly tilted, and the two ran back to the

cabin.

While they were running inside, Helene stumbled and fell against a wine cabinet that wasn’t properly attached to the wall. The cabinet instantly came crashing down toward her. Carlisle, who was just behind her, rushed over to catch the wine cabinet before it crushed her. Pushing it up with his shoulder, he leaned over and helped Helene out of the way before rolling aside himself. The wine cabinet came crashing down soon after, but she was unscathed.

Then, the yacht began to stabilize. Helene slowly crawled out of Carlisle’s arms to see that he was lying on the ground. His face was pale, his eyes were closed, and his lips were turning purple.

The sight made Helene panic, and she exclaimed, Carlisle! Are you okay?! Hey, answer me! Don’t scare me like this!!!

She slapped his cheek hard and tried opening his eyelids. She even tried pinching at his skin in a desperate attempt to wake

him.

But nothing happened. In a daze, Helene quickly resorted to artificial respiration before starting compressions. She decided to first pinch his nose and let out a breath into his mouth. The sweet taste of her breath mingling with the fresh air caused a reaction at once.

Helene was so nervous that she was about to proceed, not noticing that he had already opened his eyes. When she leaned in to give Carlisle another breath, she realized that

warmth had returned to his lips. And not only that, but he was also beginning to match her movements.

She opened her eyes wide and, was met with his strange gaze.

You’re awake?she asked in shock.

She helped Carlisle up from the ground and sat him down on a nearby sofa. His arms seemed bruised, and her chest tightened at the thought of him injured. After quickly replaceing the firstaid kit in the cabin, she began to treat Carlisle’s

wounds.

As she stared at each bruise and cut, she knew he took on each one to protect her, and a warm current rushed into her heart. She had never been cared for by a man like this.

Helene blew gently on the wounds as she carefully applied medicine to them. It was a small gesture that nearly brought a tear to Carlisle’s eyes. When he was young, one of his fondest memories of his mother was when she tended to his injuries. She would blow on them tenderly and tell him that it wouldn’t hurt so badly anymore.

Under Carlisle’s burning gaze, Helene became nervous, and her heart suddenly began pounding wildly.

Do you usually treat people’s wounds like this?Carlisle suddenly asked, breaking the silence.

How did you know?Helene often treated her brother’s wounds, and no one other than Carlisle had ever come close enough to be cared for like this.

Carlisle’s expression suddenly turned cold at her answer. Oh. I almost forgot. You were living with your ex for three years,

weren’t you? I’m sure you had lots of practice with him.

Helene stopped working for a moment, and her expression turned sour as well. She clarified, I might have been living with him, but we were more like roommates at that point. It wasn’t really a relationship anymore.”

Oh.” Carlisle turned to look out the window and hide the faint

smile from Helene.

And I have something to tell you,” Helene said, wanting to set things straight now that she had some time alone with him. I wasn’t the one who hid the contract in your grandpa’s

newspaper.”

As she spoke, she pulled out her phone and showed Carlisle the recording from the surveillance camera in their room. Carlisle sat up straight and watched in shock as Matilda walked straight to the bed, seeming to take something from the nightstand. Then, she walked directly out after she had gotten it. The whole process took no more than a minute, making it seem as though this was something she had planned for a while.

Carlisle’s eyes narrowed when he thought back to all those times he found himself short on cash, which was

uncharacteristic of him. The worst was when he was down nearly $3000, which seemingly vanished into thin air.

No one was perfect, and he chalked it up to him not remembering things correctly. It wasn’t so much money that he would care. If Helene hadn’t installed the camera in the master bedroom, he might never have found out.

I clearly remember locking the door, though. How could she have gotten in?Helene wondered.

My Grandpa has another key,Carlisle answered with a sullen face. She must have stolen it.

I left my contract in the drawer of the nightstand. If she took

it

She must have.” Carlisle grimaced and his tone was firm. She’s been taking care of my Grandpa for so long, so I didn’t want this to turn into a serious problem. I figured I would be able to look past this for her sake, but

Carlisle sighed before continuing to say, I wasn’t thinking straight the other day, and for that, I’d like to apologize.

Helene looked at Carlisle’s sincere gaze and felt moved that he would extend such a gesture to her. To her, the most precious thing in the world was trust. If someone was willing to believe in you, then it meant that they valued you as a person and respected you.

Thanks to the storm, the yacht had changed course. Come evening, they were docked at a small fishing town somewhere down the coast. It was an unassuming place far from the city with only a dozen or so houses. But it was summer, and each of the households had opened their doors to receive guests who wanted to spend time by the beach.

Helene stepped off the yacht and saw a sign for one of these rental homes not far away. Tired and hungry, she quickly walked toward it, completely oblivious to the storm.

Careful!

Suddenly, a small sign just above Helene’s head came crashing down, its bolts snapping from the strong wind and its own weight. Carlisle was quick enough to spot it and pulled

Helene into his arms. He covered her head with his hands and

kicked off to the side, changing its trajectory before it hit the ground.

The sign hit the ground with a large clang, shattering into pieces upon impact. Fortunately, neither of them were hit. Helene was scared to death and buried her face against Carlisle’s chest. She could hear his heart pounding as well, and once again, she felt touched that he would go out of his way to save her.

He had put his own life on the line for her sake twice now.

Are you alright?Carlisle asked nervously, finally letting go of Helene to check up on her.

I’m fine. Thanks.Helene’s heart was beating so wildly that she could’ve sworn it wasn’t keeping a rhythm at all. It was almost as if her body was even more moved by his actions

than she was.

The winds are strong, which means it’s dangerous to walk around aimlessly. Don’t go anywhere, okay?Carlisle warned. His voice was a bit harsh, but Helene could only hear concern.

Okay,Helene replied, nodding obediently.

Carlisle was surprised at how easily the young woman agreed, and he was reminded of a certain someone in his past. Someone much more playful and coy. If it was her, she would have definitely talked back to him. The more he told her not to do something, the more she wanted to defy him.

Helene’s willing obedience almost made him uncomfortable. He took Helene’s hand and started making excuses to hold her, saying, It’s windy, so it’s safer if I hold you.

Meanwhile, Helene’s heart wouldn’t slow down.

She kept telling herself that she had to keep her distance from Carlisle. After all, she would leave him in six months, so there was no point in developing any affection for him now. Carlisle was so blunt that he wasn’t even aware of her

reluctance. He showed her his warmth without much thought and melted her heart.

Hand in hand, the two struggled against the gales. As they made their way to one of the homestays, the rain became heavier and heavier until Helene couldn’t walk anymore. Carlisle picked her up and rushed into one of the houses.

There was only one room left in this homestay, but once the landlord saw the couple walking in, he warmly welcomed

them both.
