Hers (Blood Ties Book 2) -
Hers: Chapter 43
Bang!
I flinched at the sound and wrenched my gaze toward the bank of trees in the near distance. The gunshot was close…real fucking close. I pressed my hand against my side and tried to replace a location for the sound. I’d lost sight of Tobias and Ryth as I fought the asshole from the SUV. But the moment he’d slumped in my arms, I took off, running toward the open gates of the Order.
Desperate to replace them. “T?” I called my brother’s name, wincing at the sound of my voice in a quiet night air. It didn’t reach far, but it was loud enough.
Loud enough to draw the attention of anyone near me. I moved forward, searching the trees, and kept going, making my way in the direction of the Order. Wet leaves smacked my face, making me panic for an instant. I punched aside the branch stumbled forward, and found myself on the edge of the driveway that snaked through the trees, heading towards the building.
Headlights came out of nowhere, white and blinding. I jumped backwards, desperate for the safety of those trees once more. The growl of a sedan cut through the darkness before it tore past me in a blur. I stumbled out of the safety of those trees, seeing a pale image in the back window.
A woman pressed her hands against the glass, the whites of her wide eyes shining brightly, her mouth open in a silent scream. An ache bloomed in the back of my throat at the sight. I glanced at the license plate, replaceing the words St. James illuminated by the lights. I knew exactly who it was.
The woman who’d helped Ryth escape…Vivienne…
And the man driving had to be London St. James.
The car skidded sideways as it raced for the gates of the Order. I tried to catch my breath, looking at the beat-up Charger.
Part of me wanted to chase after them, to hunt London St. James down, because I knew that somehow he was at the heart of this, that if I could force him to tell us why all this was happening, I’d be able to stop it. Then I glanced toward the building looming ahead. Caleb was there, and Ryth and Tobias were somewhere out here.
They were my priority…
I had to replace them. I had to save them. I kept pushing…toward the building.
