Chapter 6

No matter what she said, the boy refused to budge from his spot. So, Caroline could only pretend to leave.

Leo, I know you hate me and don’t want to accept me. If so, then I’ll leave. I’m really leaving now?”

Leon, who was hiding in the artificial cave, heard her leaving footsteps. He began to panic and ran out of the cave.

He continued running down the narrow path, frantically and helplessly looking for her.

His tiny body trembled as he sobbed in sorrow.

He thought that his mom had really left.

He didn’t want his mom to leave.

In fact, he wanted his mom to come back!

More tears streamed down his tiny face, and he could not wipe them all off with his sleeves.

“Mommy… I want Mommy…” he thought to himself.

“Leo!”

Suddenly, he heard Caroline’s voice coming behind him. He turned around and saw with his tear-filled eyes that his mom didn’t leave.

At that moment, mixed feelings filled his heart, making him feel aggrieved.

His nose kept bleeding non-stop, making his chin and clothes dirty.

He felt absolutely awful. He was scared that his mom would abandon him again if he looked like a mess.

He wanted to look clean, but the more blood he wiped, the dirtier it made him.

Caroline’s heart was almost torn for her boy. Unable to bear it anymore, she rushed to him and hugged her son.

“Leo… My baby…

She did not mind the terrible state he was in.

She hugged her son tightly. After all, she had regained something she had lost. It was like she had found the world’s most priceless treasure.

Leon did not push her away. However, he did not do anything else either. He just stood there and took the hug from her

mom.

“Are you hurt?”

She released him and looked at his dirty little face. Then, she took out a handkerchief and wiped the dirt and the blood off

his face.

Leon shook his head. This level of pain was nothing to him.

He was tough and was not afraid of pain.

Caroline found some soft leaves to stop her son’s nosebleed. She rolled them up before sticking them in Leon’s nose.

In the meantime, Leon stared at his mother wide-eyed. He looked at this woman, whom he called mom, and felt familiar. She was what he had dreamt of in a mother, gentle and beautiful.

His mother’s hand caressed his face. “Her hand feels so soft. Being hugged by her feels so heavenly. Is Mommy really back now?” Leon wondered in his mind.

“Okay, Leo. Let’s go back. Mommy will clean you up, alright?”

Leon did not give her the cold shoulder. This meant that he had started to accept her. After that, Caroline carried her son back to the Tanglevine Residence.

The housekeepers were surprised to see Caroline carrying Leon back home. They knew that although Leon was young, he was a troublemaker.

Usually, he would not let anyone touch him. They only had one thought in their minds. “Why would he let Ms. Lewis, who had just arrived for only one hour, carry him? How surreal!”

Susan, the housekeeper, asked, “Ms. Lewis, what happened to Leon? Why is he covered in blood?”

“He had a nosebleed. Please prepare a set of clean clothes for him. I want to give him a bath.”

“Oh, yes, Ms. Lewis!”

As Susan brought them to the second floor, they heard a loud sound coming from the primary bedroom. Then a

housekeeper was seen running out of the room helter skelter.

When the housekeeper saw Caroline, she grabbed her and said, “Ms. Lewis, please attend to Mr. Ziegler! He’s angry again!”

With Leon in her arms, Caroline walked into the primary bedroom. Just as she stepped inside, a table lamp flew at them. Startled, she instantly turned her body to shield Leon, and it hit her squarely on the back.

“Ouch…” Caroline yelped in pain.

When Leon saw that his mom was hit, a frown formed on his little brows.

Caroline could only back off from the scene and hand Leon to Susan’s care. Then, she marched into the room and faced Quintin. With an angry and cold voice, she asked, “Are you done yet?”

Quintin’s mania was acting up again. He kept kicking the bed, shaking it intensely as if he wanted the whole world to go down with him. He was not in the state to listen to anyone’s advice.

Without warning, she slapped Quintin hard in the face.

Her slap was so strong that it made Quintin’s head turn to the side, and a red handprint mark gradually surfaced on his cheek.

The slap had undoubtedly made him come to his senses.

He was enraged.

“You b c h! How dare you hit me?”

“So what if I hit you? Do you even know what you’re doing? You don’t even know whether your son is being bullied, yet you’re here bullying others?” Caroline questioned in anger.

Her thoughts flew to her son’s pain, and her heart ached for him too.

“I don’t need your concern! Get out of my room!”

“Other than making me leave, what can you do? Even a child can do better than you do. Are you even a man? Do you think that I want to deal with you and your c p? If you keep doing this, you can go to hell for all I care!”

After her outburst, she slammed the door on her way out and left.

The sound of the door slamming was deafening.

Quintin frowned, and he felt a sense of displeasure washing over his body.

They would say when one had lost power, even those beneath them would walk all over them.

“Wasn’t this woman supposed to bring good luck and take care of me? Why does she have such a bad temper? She even dared to hit me! This is unforgivable! Wait and see. When I’m feeling better, I’ll deal with you!” Quintin angrily thought.

As Caroline walked out of the room, the housekeepers shared a glance among themselves. They had seen the way Caroline slapped Quintin.

They had never seen a person as daring as Caroline, and they thought to themselves. “Wow! Mr. Ziegler’s newly wedded wife sure is daunting.”

Caroline didn’t call anyone to clean after Quintin. She wanted to let Quintin think about the consequences of his actions.

Caroline carried her son and brought him to the playroom.

In Leon’s bathroom, Susan filled up the bathtub with water. Meanwhile, Caroline picked out the dirt crusted in Leon’s hair. Smiling gently, Caroline said, “You’re so dirty! Take off your clothes. You need a bath.”

Leon blinked his big and dark eyes at her. “Mommy’s so weird. Why is she so good to me but so bad to Daddy?” Leon thought

Leon was obedient the whole time when Caroline took off his dirty clothes.

At the side, Susan looked on with astonishment because it was a known fact that Leon Ziegler was a fussy child. He would not let anyone touch him.

Quintin was usually the one taking care of Leon. However, after he got sick, the child never let anyone touch him anymore.

After Caroline got off all Leon’s clothes, the boy shyly covered his privates with his hands. His small face was tensed up, seemingly not wanting Caroline to see his body.

“Okay, I won’t look. You can clean yourself, and I’ll help you if you need me.”

The child then jumped into the bathtub. Almost instantly, the clear water in the tub turned murky. Caroline looked at his tiny body, her heart full of pain.

Leon was one of the triplets she had, the other two being Mayson and Cayson. Moreover, Leon was the firstborn. However, Leon was skinny to the point that his ribs could be seen.

Chapter 6

Caroline only felt pain for Leon and asked, “Susan, what happened to Leon? What makes him so skinny now!”

As Leon’s back faced Caroline, to her shock, she found that the boy’s back and legs were full of scars. Tears instantly streamed down her face. “Where did these scars come from?”
