My Hunted Mate -
Chapter Fourty
Corinna
Intertwining my hands together, I lean forward in my seat placing themon top of the long oak table, on the opposite end of the carved tableGia, Alpha Jack, His Beta Cameron and Gamma Garrett along with twopack warriors are seated, all with faces equally as serious as my own. Kaisits next to me with Olive and Mateo on his right, Sabine stands directlybehind me while Phoenix sits on my left.
We have been sitting in a meeting for hours, trying to discuss a newpeace treaty, equally fair and beneficial to both the pack and Kai's clan.We have now been staying with the pack for almost a week, trying tofinalise our agreement but still we replace ourselves unable to.
The issues is the pack is overly cautious when it comes to me, unsurewhether they can trust not only a clan of vampires but also the hybridthey've heard tales of horror about, things my own pack has spread toinfluence this exact distrust and disgust toward me.
Probably their way to lessen the numbers of people coming to my aidover the years and adding to the numbers of people to alert themwhen they come across me, I would assume that was their aim, considering that was exactly what they got.
"Why don't we take a break and regroup in fifteen minutes? " I suggestwith a loud sigh. " We've been at this for hours, everyone needs to eat, feed and then we can come back with fresh heads. "
Alpha Jack purses his lips together for a second, then turns and nodstoward his people. " That seems like a good idea. "
" Thank God! I've needed to pee for at least ten minutes! ” Gia exclaims, jumping to her feet and rushing out of the room, Jack glances her nowempty chair with an amused smile on his lip as he shakes his head.
We all exit the room in silence, Kai wraps his arm around my waist, leading me through the house. When the wolves have gone theirseparate ways, Phoenix, Sabine, Mateo and Olive follow us to mine andKai's room to stock up on bottled blood we brought with us.
The five of them don't wait to unscrew the bottles, they have beenfeeding a lot less while staying with the pack, trying to save as much ofthe blood as possible considering our trip got extended already.
While watching them gulping down the blood, I notice that the smell ofit is now oddly appealing to me, my mouth watering at the strong scentof it wafting through the room. When I quickly piece together what thereason for my sudden craving is, I bite down on my bottom lip, my eyesdrifting to my mate who runs his tongue over his lips as he finishesfeeding.
Subconsciously my hand raises to rest on my lower stomach, I know Ineed to tell him, and I need to tell him soon before it starts to get far toobvious and he replaces out himself. I can't let this be a repeat of when hefound out about my hybrid status, but every time I open my mouth toattempt to tell him, all of my fears overwhelm me to the point I replacemyself speechless.
When I notice Sabine's curious eyes on me, I drop my hand from myslowly growing stomach. I force myself to look away from her, swallowing nervously as I wander over to Kai, leaning into him.
He instantly wraps his arm around me, pressing his lips to my forehead." Are you alright my darling? " He sends me a smile, tossing the nowempty bottle into a small trash can in the corner of the room.
" Yeah, I just need to talk to you about something tonight, if you havethe time? " I whisper to him, wrapping my arms around his middle.
He looks down at me with a look of interest. " I always have time foryou, you know that. What do you need to talk about? Is everythingokay? "
I slowly nod. " Yeah. Everything's... Fine, we'll talk later okay? Let's justsort this treaty first. "
Once everyone is fed, we make our way downstairs to the kitchen so Ican grab some food before we have to return to the conference room. Iquickly put together a peanut butter and Nutella sandwich, while thewater boils for me to make myself some lemon tea.
Placing my freshly made sandwich onto the coffee table in the livingroom, I walk back into the kitchen to make my tea, only to replace Kaipulling out a mug from the cabinet. * Coffee? " He questions.
"Uh, no, lemon tea. " I correct him.
He sends me a strange look but drops the tea bag into the mug, alongwith a slice of lemon. " You always drink coffee with your peanut butterchocolate sandwiches, making a change? " He asks, pouring the waterinto the mug and holding it out to me.
Clenching my teeth, I move toward him, gently taking the tea from hishands. " Uh no, I just haven't been sleeping great this week, I figurecaffeine will only worsen that. " I half lie, to which he nods.
We go into the living room, settling onto the sofa together while I eat,but I only get to eat half of my sandwich when a loud scream echoesfrom the distance. The people around us instantly start to rush to theirfeet, shifting into their wolves and taking off out of the house, automatically I replace myself doing the same, sprinting after them.Forcing myself to run as fast as two legs can carry me, I speed throughthe woods following the group of wolves who run a couple of feetahead of me. Kai is hot on my trail as we come across a group of nearlythirty rogue wolves, edging towards us and getting ready to attack.
On the ground, covered in her own blood lies Gia, whimpering softlyand clutching her shoulder. Her eyes are wide and panicked as theysearch for someone, that someone being Alpha Jack who thunderstoward her on four legs, standing over her protectively, his growls areloud and daring, sending a promise of death to any who try to hurt hismate.
One of the rogues attempts to leap at him, anger surges through me asI whip my hand out sending not only the rogue who attacked, but all ofthem barrelling through the air. The wolves from Jack's pack turn to mein shock, but Kai immediately jumps into action, using his speed to flashover to one of the closer by rogues and snapping it's neck without anyissue.
Jack's wolves recover from their shock, getting ready to attack theirenemies who have harmed their Luna. Holding out my hands towardfive of the rogues who are surrounding two of the warriors, I begin tochant loudly. The five of them collapse to the ground, whimpering andhowling as they try to curl into themselves to fight the pain I'minflicting on them, they don't get any relief, only death as the twowarriors rip them apart.
When I glance over to my mate, I see two wolves jumping on top ofhim, but before I can do anything to help him, he shoves the bodies tothe side, leaping to his feet with their hearts in his hands.
Gia lets out a cry of pain that encourages me to end this and quickly, Ieye up the remainder of the rogues, muttering an enchantment in ahurry, my voice only gets louder as I swipe my hands upwards.
At my movements flames erupt onto the rogues, who all desperatelyrun around, howling in pain as their coast of fur burn to nothing, untilfinally all that is left of them is piles of ash, everything falls quiet otherthan Gia's cries and I rush over to where Alpha Jack has now shiftedand is holding her body on his lap.
