Chapter 47: Counterattack

Chapter 47: Counterattack

Melissa's POV

Back in my room, I sat on the balcony, acutely aware that the others present were oblivious to what had just happened.

Sebastian also seemed unfamiliar with that woman, yet Geraint had allowed her to remain after saying so much.

While I couldn't discern whether he intended to sabotage our relationship, his actions certainly aroused my suspicions.

Considering the issues with Debra and Vince, he hadn't exactly been thriving in the Pack. He needed to draw attention to himself; otherwise, he risked becoming an easy target for anyone.

"What are you thinking about?" Sebastian appeared behind me and wrapped his arms around me.

When I didn't respond, he assumed I was still troubled by Winnie Harold and attempted to console me. "I'm sorry; perhaps my behavior contributed to this..."

"It's not your fault; this has nothing to do with you. I can see that you don't have much of a relationship with her. I'm proud of you."

As I leaned my head against his chest, our eyes met, and in that moment, I still couldn't bring myself to share what I knew. After all, that was his brother, and it wouldn't be right to go against him.

I had intended to return to bed for some rest when Basil suddenly called out for Sebastian to hurry to the office. I guessed it had something to do with signatures and stamps, so I didn't intervene. "Sebastian!" I called out just before he left. "Whoever has done this to you is surely very familiar with the castle. If you can, try to obtain some spécial ink; it will be crucial for signing documents." Seeing me so serious, Sebastian smiled and nodded.

"Don't think I'm being nosy. While I'm not yet Luna and don't know much about many things in the North, I hope you'll allow me to secretly help you investigate."

There was a pleading tone in my voice, hoping he would agree. Although I hadn't exercised many of Luna's powers in the Meadow, I had grown up watching how my parents handled these matters! "As long as you're willing, you can do it anytime! Melissa, here, do whatever you like. No one will stop you."

As he spoke, he leaned down and kissed my lips.

Hearing his question, I responded with a smile: "First, I would replace a way to trace the source of that so-called tax increase document you supposedly signed. Then, using notes and specific information, I'd analyze whether this person had any accomplices. After that, I'd need to talk to the captives taken during the raid for a more detailed investigation."

Seeing me lay out so much at once, Sebastian's eyes filled with admiration. "I didn't expect you to have thought this through so deeply. That really moves me."

After receiving another kiss from him, I felt a wave of happiness wash over me. "I'll get in touch with Basil; he's been a bit dull lately, so you two can work on this together."

His approval made me incredibly joyful. However, that happiness quickly faded when I learned that the elder who had supported Vince during the council meeting sent me a new invitation. The latest accusations suggested that I was the root cause of the taxation issue. I had intended to share this with Sebastian, but they seemed determined to prevent me from having the opportunity. Just as they were about to take me away from the castle, Sebastian transformed and appeared before us.

Watching his barely restrained fury nearly consume everyone present, I hurried over to his side with a smile. "Alright, darling, perhaps we're both a little anxious! It seems these guys plan to interrogate me tomorrow and use this chance to pressure you." I communicated with him through our mind link, and Sebastian let out a distinct sigh. "I wish you weren't so clever."

My efforts to soothe him seemed to have some effect. Once he returned to his human form, I quickly took his hand. "These people are pressing you step by step; you must be cautious of their actions. If anything feels off, don't act hastily. I don't want you to lose your position alongside Beta and Gamma."

"Alpha, this woman is now involved in some matters; Elder Edgar wishes to bring her back to the council tonight for public hearings tomorrow."

The man who was escorting me weakened significantly upon seeing Sebastian, his fear evident in his expression.

"She is innocent, and we will replace the true culprit."

Although Sebastian's tone was calm, the underlying threat made everyone more uneasy.

Aware of my significance to him, the members of the council didn't press too hard on me.

As I walked into the council chamber in the morning, Sebastian was already waiting nearby with my closest friends.

Elder Edgar was the first to direct a question at me.

"Melissa Helberg. This is merely an inquiry. You shouldn't have troubled figures as

important as the Alpha."

"Once she becomes the Luna, she'll sit with us."

Sebastian showed no respect for the old man. "You old fool, I won't let you get away with disrespecting her."

"Respected Alpha, this is just a minor inquiry," Edgar replied, his tone condescending, before continuing his questioning.

"We noticed you were missing for a period before the raid, during which you had extensive correspondence with the people from the Meadow. Our judgment is that the Meadow strongly supports the actions of the Mad Dog. Moreover, you also instructed our soldiers to cease attacks and patrols against certain Pack members, areas that cannot afford the taxes. This does not benefit us in the North at all."

"But our attacks forced them to seek refuge with Atrias Elliotson."

I felt as if this man hadn't thought through his words; how could he not grasp such an obvious truth?

Phoebe even looked like she wanted to stand up and applaud me, but I shot her a glance that urged her to remain seated.

"Before you level further accusations at me, I have something to say."

Upon hearing my words, Ethan Vrzogic stood up immediately. As a member of the council, he had every right to give me this opportunity.

"Elder Edgar, I hope you refrain from assigning guilt to me so carelessly. I'd also like to ask -before this council session began, did you question the officer who led the raid? What was the timing of the counterattack, and when exactly was that document sent out? How did the taxed tribes learn of it, and who provided them with the document? Did someone obtain it directly from the Alpha, perhaps? If you're willing to investigate these questions, I'm sure the Alpha would be more than willing to answer."

My calm demeanor stirred whispers among the council members.

"Don't say that I'm trying to stir up trouble, as I have no intention of causing any issues. It's just that we haven't found the source of that document. Once we determine where it came from, we won't need to make baseless suspicions. If you replace it difficult, we can directly look at the beneficiaries of this council activity and see who might want to frame the Alpha or me. And if successful, who stands to gain from it."

As soon as my words concluded, the entire council chamber fell into an eerie silence.

I felt a sense of relief wash over me, having finally shifted their perspective. This increased their trust in me and tested my loyalty to the North.

Everyone knew that Elliot was a lover of peace; he had no desire to get involved in such matters, and I could assure them that as long as the North did not take extreme actions, he would never join the alliance!

Today's events made it painfully clear that the threats lurking in the North were far more insidious than I had imagined!
