Chapter 81
None of that really bothered Jonathan. He wasn't petty or narrow-minded. Still, the thought of Filip being Cynthia's first made his blood boil with jealousy, and he had the urge to tear Hip apart just to relieve the anger bubbling in him.
He sat in his car for what felt like hours before finally calming himself down. Lilian's motives were clear, and he knew that falling for her provocations would make him just as foolish as Filip.
Meanwhile, Cynthia received a new assignment at the TV station. During the morning meeting, Freddie briefed her. "Cynthia, the Paradise Resort project is kicking off tomorrow. There's going to be a groundbreaking ceremony, and the station has scheduled an interview with the project manager. Get ready."
Cynthia knew that Yates Construction had secured the Paralise Resort project, but she had no idea Filip would be leading as the project manager. It seemed strange to her-Filip was still inexperienced in handling such large-scale projects.
Typically, the vice chairman or even Henry himself would have taken charge. Still, it was a huge win for the Yates family, and Cynthia agreed readily.
"We're planning to follow the Paradise Resort project in depth, Freddie continued. "You'll lead the coverage, and you're free to assemble your own team. Pick anyone you want from the station. I'm sure everyone will be eager to work with you." Cynthia nodded. "Understood. I'll give it my best."
At 7:30 p.m. Cynthia wrapped up her news broadcast and was heading home. As she stepped outside the station, she noticed a familiar car parked by the entrance. A small smile tugged at her lips as she approached the vehicle. Opening the passenger door, she slid into the seat and greeted Jonathan "Hey, free enough to pick me up today?"
But Jonathan wasn't in the mood for banter. His expression was serious as he replied, "I missed you."
Cynthia leaned closer, her hand instinctively reaching out to give Jonathan's chin a playful scratch, as she often did. "You seem a little upset today."
At her action, a slight smile tug at Jonathan's lips. "No, I'm not."
Of course, that was a lie. His terrible mood that night spilled over, and it wasn't long before it manifested in other ways- particularly in how clingy and possessive he became in bed. He kissed her with a fervor that bordered on desperation, his lips worshipping every inch of her skin.
When their bodies became one, Jonathan held himself above her, watching her face intently, savoring every subtle expression, every moment of her pleasure. He thrived on her intoxicated, languid reactions, and he tried his very best to satisfy her. Cynthia was completely immersed in the moment.
Just as she was on the verge, a soft, husky voice broke the silence, "Who's better, me or him?"
Lost in the afterglow, Cynthia barely registered his question. Her voice was sleepy, though it still held a sultry note, "What?"
Jonathan propped himself up on one arm, his gaze locked on Cynthia's. Tonight, she seemed unusually clear-headed compared to the times they were usually lost in each other.
His voice, low and husky, brushed past her ear, a mix of seduction and insecurity. "Between me and Filip, who's better?"
The moment Filip's name left his lips, Cynthia snapped out of her haze. Her eyes flew open, the dreamy softness replaced by cold clarity. Jonathan noticed the change instantly. A flicker of anger crossed her face, and he immediately regretted his words. He hurriedly apologized, Tm sorry."
Cynthia shoved him away, her voice sharp. Jonathan, you've crossed the line!"

Jonathan leaned back, half-lying on the bed, his quilt barely covering him. His sculpted abs were exposed, and with his sulky expression and tousled hair, he looked like a pouting statue, more like a toy boy than the typically stoic man he usually was "Can't I even say his name?" he asked, frustration creeping in. 'Is Filip really such a sore spot? I barely even mentioned him, and she's already pissed, he thought.
"Mr. Bennett, let me remind you," Cynthia said, her tone firm. "We're doing this for fun, not to hurt each other." Cynthia's annoyance wasn't just about the mention of Filip. She could sense that Jonathan's jealousy was linked to the fact that she wasn't a virgin. But what he didn't realize-what he couldn't possibly know-was that her first time hadn't been Filip's at all.
The memory was a blur, one she had spent years trying to piece together. All she knew was that it had been a violation, not a choice. Despite years of searching, she found no answers, just suspicion pointing to Lilian. The thought always filled her with misery Cynthia got up and went to the bathroom. When she returned, Jonathan was still sitting on the bed, looking guilty. "Look, I'm sorry. I'm not the sort of man you think I am. But... I'm just jealous. I don't even know why."
If it were anyone else. Jonathan wouldn't have felt this way, but Filip was different. He had been in Cynthia's life for over 20 years. Even though they were no longer close, Jonathan couldn't shake the feeling that part of her still belonged to Filip. He feared that now, with Filip realizing Lilian's true nature, he might try to win Cynthia back.
Cynthia watched Jonathan, who looked more vulnerable than she had ever seen him. His usual confidence was replaced with uncertainty, like a child trying to make amends. "Don't be mad, okay?" he muttered, resembling a guilty puppy.
She sighed, sitting on the edge of the bed, and gave him a quick kiss. "I'm not mad," she said softly. But then she added firmly. "But Jonathan, don't fall for me. If you do, it'll be over between us." "Why? Why should someone else be punished for what Filip did to you?" Jonathan questioned.
"Because I don't love you," Cynthia said bluntly, leaving him speechless. Tm sleeping on the third floor tonight. You should take a shower and rest too," she added, her voice calm. Then she left. Right, how could I forget, Jonathan thought.
When Cynthia had first moved in, she had been clear-they would respect each other's privacy, and she would stay on the third floor. But over time, they had grown closer, falling into a routine of sleeping in each other's arms night after night. He had forgotten about the boundaries they had initially set.
Jonathan was battled by how Cynthia had stayed so cool and detached all this time. Three years, he thought bitterly. Even if her heart was made of ice, shouldn't it have thawed by now?"
They had been acting like a couple in the honeymoon phase of their relationship, and he thought her attachment to him was growing. Yet with one word, they were back to square one. "Does she care about Filip that much? Jonathan mused.
