Chapter 83

Cynthia looked at Filip with a faint smile and said, "How do you plan to make up for it?"

A glimmer of hope seemed to ignite in Filip's eyes.

He carefully took Cynthia's hand and hesitantly said, "Cynthia, can we start over again?" His voice carried a trace of pleading and humility, but there was also a hint of hope in his eyes.

Cynthia slowly pulled her hand away from his, watching as the hope in his eyes shattered bit by bit. "Filip, what makes you think that just because you turn back. I should be there waiting for you?" she said. Filip's face darkened.

"And what makes you think I would abandon Jonathan for you? Your arrogance and ignorance?" Cynthia continued asking.

Filip's expression grew ugly. He said, "Cynthia, I know you won't forgive me. In front of you, I'm not arrogant. I'm insecure." She never knew how insecure he truly was.

He knew saying these words was too much, and he understood that the resentment accumulated over the past three years couldn't vanish just because he repented. But now, he was desperate to hold onto her.

These past few days, the memories of their past haunted him every moment. He finally realized that Cynthia was the most precious person in his life. Her love had once been selfless, pure, passionate, and sincere-the opposite of the filthy schemes with Lilian. Whenever he thought about what he had done to her in the past, he hated himself for it.

Filip continued. "Jonathan is not the right person for you. His family is too complicated. A first-class family like his will eventually choose someone of equal status for marriage. I've done my research-the Bennett family values the Sexton family and the Sullivan family, both prestigious families in the Betrico. If you stay with him, at best you'll just be a hidden lover."

Cynthia gave a mocking smile and said, "It sounds like you're trying to look out for me."

Filip lowered his gaze and replied, "I know I'm selfish, but I still don't want to lose you. These past few days, I kept thinking about our past, our student days, those carefree times when we only had eyes for each other. Can we really not go back to that?" Cynthia didn't hesitate. She simply sighed deeply and said, "Let's not talk about the past. Let's move forward. For the sake of the Yates family, I don't want things to get ugly between us, but let me make it clear: 1, Cynthia, will never go back to when we used to. "Is it because of Jonathan? Does our twenty-year relationship mean nothing compared to the month you've spent with him?" Filip asked. He sounded agitated.

Cynthia turned around and looked into Filip's eyes. Her gaze was calm and profound. But her words hit Filip like a thunderbolt.

She said, "We've been together for three years-since the day you and Lilian went abroad. So, it's not just a month like you thought. Sometimes, I feel like everything now is the result of past actions. The connection between you and me has ended, while the connection between him and me has only just begun. Whatever happens in the future, I'm ready to accept it."

Filip was stunned. It took him a long time to react. "You've really been together for three years?" he asked.

Cynthia said calmly, I have no reason to lie to you."

The last flicker of hope in Filip's heart seemed to be extinguisher. He thought, Three years. It has already been three years. No wonder there is always a kind of tacit understanding and intimacy between them that only couples would have. Filip was at a loss for words for a moment.

"Filip, we should look out for ourselves now," Cynthia said. With that, she walked away.

Filip hesitated for a second, then suddenly ran forward and pulled Cynthia into his arms.

Cynthia was stunned for a moment and was about to resist when suddenly she felt a massive impact on her back. It was as if something heavy had slammed down. She heard Filip, who was shielding her, let out a heavy cough and saw him cough up blood. Then came the sound of a wooden plank falling heavily to the ground. Cynthia looked up and saw a crane overhead, clearing construction debris.

At that moment, the crane was lifting a stack of planks right above them. Due to some carelessness in securing them, one plank had slid out and fallen straight down. Though not large, it fell from a height at high speed, hitting Filip's back hard enough to make him cough up blood. That plank was originally meant to hit her.

Cynthia's expression turned solemn. She asked. "Filip, are you okay?"

Filip was bent over, unable to straighten his back. His face was pale, and he looked to be in extreme pain. Yet he endured it, forcing out the words through gritted teeth, 'T'm fine."

How could he be fine? Cynthia remained calm. quickly calling Vince, who was not far away, for help. Soon, Zeke also ran over. "Mr. Yates, are you okay?"

Zeke was brought from Yates Construction and had been working under Filip lately.

Cynthia said, "He got hit by a plank that fell from the crane. We need to get him to a hospital quickly."

The crane operator also hurried over and asked, "What happened?"

Zeke pointed at the operator and scolded, "You're in big trouble. We'll deal with you later."

Filip was urgently taken to the infirmary. However, as it had just been set up, most of the staff had not yet arrived, and it was poorly equipped, with just a doctor and two nurses..

After half an hour, Filip sat in a chair, shirtless, while the doctor examined him. His complexion had improved somewhat, and he wasn't coughing blood anymore. There was a large bruise swelling on his back.

The doctor, a man in his fifties wearing glasses, finished examining him and said, "It seems to be just superficial tissue bruising, but since he coughed blood earlier, I recommend going to a hospital in the city for a full examination. There could be internal injuries." Cynthia said immediately. "No time to waste. You should go to Peace Hospital with us now,"

Filip, however, remained seated, not moving. After a moment of silence, he said, "I'm fine, no need to go."

Cynthia frowned at him and said, "Filip, this isn't a joke." She felt conflicted. No matter what, he had protected her from harm. She couldn't just ignore that.

While they were at an impasse, Zeke spoke up. "Ms. Jones, you might not know this, but although Mr. Yates is the highest authority on the project's contractor side, he's still under the client's leadership. Mr-Yates was sent to this place by Mr. Bennett, who made it clear that after the project started, he must stay on-site and work alongside the frontline workers, only returning to the city if absolutely necessary."

He continued, "It's just the first day, and if he says he needs to go back to rest because of an injury, it might make Mr. Bennett think he's faking it, leaving an impression that he's unfit for his duties. If they use that as an excuse to replace the contractor, Mr. Yates can't bear that responsibility."
