"Lucas!" Sarah chirped.

Anne stiffened at the way her mother addressed Lucas.

Lucas walked over with joy filling his eyes. "Anne, Ma'am Vallois. I thought I was mistaken. It's reallyyou. Are you here as tourists?"

Anne smiled sheepishly. "I'm taking my mom out for a trip."

"That's nice," Lucas said.

"Why are you here, Lucas? Do you own this school as well?"

"I'm here for certain research. My friend is a professor here, so I decided to drop by," Lucas said."Wow, how impressive to be a professor in Cambrick at such a young age! As expected of someonewho would be your friend," Sarah said

"You are too kind, Ma'am Vallois."

Sarah shot Anne a look, and before Anne had time to figure out what it meant, Sarah proceededand said, "oh my, I'm exhausted from all this walking. Lucas, why don't you take Anne for a walk? Iwill go over there to rest. I remember seeing a cafe on our way here. Anne, go there to look for melater!"

"Huh? Mom..." Sarah ran off lightning fast before Anne could stop her and did not appearexhausted. Feeling uncomfortable to be left alone with Lucas, she said, "I'm sorry about that. I'msure you are busy. Don't worry about me."

"I'm done with the day and was going to walk around anyway when I spotted you two. Keep mecompany for a while?"

Since he had said so, there was no reason for Anne to refuse.

Sarah turned around to look at the two and was impressed by what a perfect match they looked.'If only Lucas could be my son-in-law..." she thought.

The two took a long stroll in silence until eventually...

"You..."

They both tried to speak at the same moment.

Amused, Lucas paused and took the initiative. "How have you been?"

"The kids are with Anthony, and it's not that easy to see them. I always have to beg my way to it,"Anne said with resignation

"You used to be worried about them being discovered, and now, you have to worry about not beingable to see them. I suppose both are equally difficult.”

Anne felt his words in her heart as he summed up her struggle with a sentence.

"But since you are here, I assume things aren't as bad?" Lucas asked.

"I snuck out.” Anne looked up at the sky. "If the kids aren't in Luton, I would never go back.”

It had been so hard for her to escape and finally be free.

"Do you think this is good or bad?" Anne asked.

"I would say that you could not go back if you don't want to, but I'm sure that's not what you wantto hear,” he said.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Newman, but I don't have the luxury of living my life the way I want yet." She loweredher gaze.

Even if she could, she knew her place and knew that she had nothing to do with Lucas any longer.Lucas's expression darkened as he stared off at the river. "This wouldn't have happened if only Iwere strong enough.”

Anne frowned. "You are strong and talented. Anthony is powerful because he has no weaknessesand is more ruthless than anyone. Those kinds of men are dangerous. Mr. Newman, you are farmore brilliant than he would ever be. Please don't think like that or try to change.”

He glanced at her. "You deserve a better life."

"I hope that we will both have a bright future ahead,” Anne said with a smile.
