Saving His Feral Mate -
Chapter 4: Mate
TWO YEARS LATER
Alpha Knox POV
I was sitting in my office going over some paper work, when there was a knock at the door.
“Come in” I said.
The door opened and my Beta Jag, walked in. His full name is Jagger, but everyone calls him Jag. We’ve been friends since we were little and I trust him with my life. He’s only a month younger than I am and like me, he’s mateless. We’ve been looking for our fated mates for five years now and neither one of us has had any luck.
Our parents have been nagging both of us, over the past two years to take chosen mates. They keep saying how important it is for the pack, that the Alpha and Beta have partners. They say mates make us stronger as an individual, but that it also completes the pack and makes us stronger as a whole.
I’m just not ready to give up on my fated mate yet, I think she’s out there somewhere and I plan on replaceing her. When I do, I won’t ever let her go. I’ll cherish her and treat her like a Queen, she’s my everything and I haven’t even met her yet.
Jag dropped himself into a seat across from my desk and let out a defeated sigh.
“What’s going on Jag? That was a bit dramatic.” I asked, with an eyebrow raised.
“It’s my parents, I swear to the moon goddess, if they push another she-wolf on me as a potential mate, I’m gonna snap.” He said, with irritation clear in his tone.
“Who is It this time?” I asked curiously. Knowing how our parents have been secretly contacting other local packs and trying to push high ranking she-wolves our way, as potential mates.
“Gemma.” Jag said, while letting out a defeated sigh. She’s the beta’s daughter of a neighbour pack. My parents also tried to encourage me to take her as a chosen mate, but I refused. She’s annoying, loud and obnoxious. I would never want someone like that as my mate.
“Ouch. What did you say?” I asked, while scrunching up my nose in disgust. Jag is like me, he’s waiting for his fated mate and is against the idea of choosing one.
Jag and I aren’t virgins or anything, but no she-wolves have been able to catch our attention for more then a night or two. Lots of women throw themselves at us because of our ranks, but I tend to replace that a little desperate and a total turn off. They only want the title and power, which I’m not going to give to just anyone.
“I told them no, like every other time they’ve suggest someone that isn’t my fate mate.” He said, while rubbing his hands over his face in frustration.
“I hear ya brother, my parents have been on my back as well. I feel your pain.” I replied, while shaking my head, remembering all the arguments I’ve had with my parents over the topic.
“What are you working on?” Jag asked, changing the subject.
“There’s been a few rogues spotted just outside of our border. I was going over the patrol report from last night.” I replied, while glancing down at the report. I was getting a little concerned with how close the rogues were getting to our territory. Rogues are lone wolves, that usually are up to no good. Most of them are either criminals that were banished form their packs, or they left their packs because they don’t like rules and structure. Some become feral after being alone for so long and they lose touch with their human counter parts. They tend to be quite dangerous.
“What are we going to do about them?” Jag asked, with a concerned frown.
“We’re going to take care of them, before they become a problem.” I replied, in a serious tone. I want to make sure the rogues stay off my territory. We don’t want them around here, they are nothing but trouble.
“What do you want me to do?” Jag asked.
“Get a team of 5 warriors ready to go. We’re going rogue hunting.” I replied and Jag simply nodded. He had an excited grin on his face. Hunting is part of our basic instincts, we are wolves after all. We love a good chase and kill.
“When would you like to leave, Knox?” Jag asked. He’s my closest friend and when we are alone, I prefer him to address me by my name. Only when others are around, does he address me formally, as Alpha.
“Be ready to go in a half hour. I just have to drop by my fathers office.” I replied. Jag nodded his head before leaving me alone in my office.
I got up from my chair and put away the file folder that I was working on, before leaving my office and heading down the hall towards my father’s office.
My pack is big and we are continuously growing and expanding on the business side of things. My father helps with some of the businesses, since I’m usually busy running the pack.
I got to his office door but before I knocked, I paused when I heard my mother and father talking inside his office, in low voices. Thanks to my werewolf hearing, I could make out their conversation.
“He needs to chose a mate, the pack members are starting to worry that he won’t produce a heir and that there won’t be a Luna to take over when I’m retired. The elders aren’t happy that he’s waited this long. You need to talk some sense into him.” My mother said, in a low voice. She sounded annoyed and flustered.
“I know. He’s just so damn stubborn, I’ve brought it up with him many times and he always brushes me off. I’ll tr…” My father started to say, but I was irritated and didn’t want to hear anymore. I swung the door open abruptly, cutting him off. Both my parents turned to look at me, they had surprise expressions on their faces.
“Son, we were just talking about y…” My mother started to speak, but I cut her off.
“Listen, I’ve told you before, I’m not taking a chosen mate.” I said, with irritation clear in my tone.
“Now son, you need to understand the pack needs a Luna. It’s been five years and you still haven’t found your fated mate, it’s time you stop thinking about yourself and start prioritizing the packs needs. You need a heir, hell, you should already have one.” My father spat out angrily. I was really getting sick of this topic. I saw my mother glare at my father, I knew she wasn’t happy with his choice of words. She quickly spoke up before things got overly heated.
“We love you hunny, we want you to be happy as well. What if, we have a handful of eligible she-wolves come to stay with us for a few days. You could get to know them and see if any of them would be suitable to be your Luna.” My mother offered, with a hopeful look in her eyes. I let out a defeated sigh, before answering.
“Fine, but if I don’t replace them to be suitable, I don’t want to hear a word about it. Understood?” I was sick of this conversation and I had better things to do at the moment, so if accepting her offer shut them up, so be it.
My mothers face lit up with excitement at my words. I glanced over at my father and he had a shocked look on his face, like he was expecting me to put up more of a fight.
“Thank you son, I gotta go make some phone calls.” My mother squealed out excitedly, as she stood from her chair and kissed my cheek, before leaving the office.
“I’m glad you’re finally listening, son.” My father said, with a satisfied smile on his face.
“Don’t get to excited, I said I’ll get to know them, I never said I’ll take one as my chosen mate.” I replied, with a frown.
“That’s all that we ask, be open to the possibility and give the girls a shot.” My farther continued and I simply nodded. I didn’t want to talk about it anymore.
“Rogues have been spotted just past our border. I’m going out with a few warriors and Jag to deal with them. They are getting to close for comfort.” I said, changing the subject. I watched as a frown formed on my fathers face.
“Why do you need to go? You’re the Alpha, why not send the warriors, you are putting yourself in unnecessary danger.” My father replied, with a disapproving look on his face.
“This is my pack and I’m going to protect it, not hide in my office while the warriors fight my battles.” I spat out.
My father rarely got his hands dirty when he was Alpha, he always had his warriors do the dirty work for him. I swore to myself, that when I became Alpha, things would be different around here. The pack members have grown to respect me more for my hands on approach and I don’t plan on changing that.
“What if something happens to you? You shouldn’t risk your safety for a couple rogues.” My father argued.
“Im going.” I replied between gritted teeth, before standing from my chair and walking out of his office, before he could reply.
I mind-linked Jag to meet me out front. It’s time to go hunting. This will be good, taking down some rogues is exactly what I need to get rid of the anger that’s coursing through me, thanks to my parents.
When I got outside, Jag was already there waiting for me, with handful of my warriors. We made our way to the tree line. It was dark outside and currently 10:00pm. The only light illuminating the forest, was the moon above us.
“Let’s stick together, if you come across any rogues close to the border, take them into custody. I want to know what their intentions are. If they put up a fight, kill them.” I announced. We usually let the rogues that we capture explain themselves. We have come across the odd rogue that wasn’t a bad person, but it’s rare. They usually fight, leaving us no choice but to kill them.
“Yes, Alpha.” The warriors replied in unison.
We stripped out of our clothes and quickly shifted into our wolves.
My wolf Gunner, is a large black wolf. He towers over most wolves, thanks to our Alpha bloodline. He’s also stronger and faster than the average wolf.
For some reason, Gunner seems to be anxious and on high alert tonight. I wonder if he senses something. I asked him what was up, but he didn’t seem to know, so I decided to let it be and focus on the task at hand.
I motioned with my head towards the forest and took off running. Jag and the warriors followed closely behind.
We ran outside our territory border for hours without picking up any scents or tracks. I was starting to think, that it was going to be a uneventful night, when I picked up a faint but intoxicating scent. It smelt like freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and it had me drooling. Where is that delicious smell coming from?
Gunner was prancing around loving the scent as much as I did. I started to follow it, my warriors hot on my heals.
I came to a clearing and that’s when I spotted her. A large reddish brown wolf. She was almost as big as my wolf and a sight for sore eyes. She was absolutely breathtaking. The moon light illuminated her fur, making it look so silky and shinny.
Gunner was going berserk in my head, before growling out the word I’ve been waiting year to hear.
“MATE”
That’s when it hit me. That wolf was my mate and she’s a rogue, I could smell it mixed in with her intoxicating scent.
I could see her sniffing the air, before she looked my way. I saw the recognition in her eyes, when they met mine. But within seconds, she started to snarl and growl at me, while showing off her large canines.
What the hell is going on? This is not the response I was expecting. Before I could process what was happening, she lunged and knocked me to the ground. I quickly got back up, as she lunged at me again, snapping her teeth in my direction. I knocked her off, causing her to growl menacingly at me. I jump on top of her, before she could lung at me again and tried to pin her to the ground with my body. I wish I could talk with her, figure out why she’s fighting me. I’m her goddess given mate, this doesn’t make sense.
She continue to struggle even as I pinned her down, I had to admit, she’s quite strong for a she-wolf.
I really needed to talk with her, so I made a very risky decision and shifted into my human form. She stood still for a minute, I could see the confusion in her eyes. I stood up from the ground directly in front of her.
“Shift.” I commanded, in a stern voice. She didn’t comply, simply growled at me in return. I was shocked, only an Alpha can defy another Alpha’s command.
I was distracted with my own thoughts and didn’t notice her lung at me. She knocked me on my back and latched onto my neck, sinking in her canines into my throat. She held me down on the ground. I felt both pain and pleasure from her bite. Volts of electricity shot through my body, at the contact. Was my own mate going to kill me?
I heard my warriors and Jag growling, as they got ready to attack her. I had completely forgotten they were with me, I was so preoccupied with my mate.
“Back off! Don’t attack her.” I order, while gasping for air. She was holding on tight enough, that I was struggling to breath.
I could see the confusion and concern in my warriors eyes, especially Jag’s. Hopefully I’ll live long enough, to explain myself to him.
“I just want to talk, little mate.” I said, while still gasping for air. She responded by biting down harder. f**k, she might actually kill me, I thought to myself. But then, she release my neck and looked down at me for a minute. I could see so many emotions swirling in her big blue eyes, fear, hate, confusion and the one that gave me hope, longing.
Before I could speak again, she took off running like a bat out of hell, disappearing deep into the forest.
I hadn’t notice that Jag had shifted and what now standing beside me.
“Care to explain?” He asked. I glanced over to see he had a curious, yet concerned frown.
“That was my mate.” I said in a low voice, while holding my bleeding neck in my hand.
“s**t! She just tried to kill you.” Jag replied, with wide eyes. I glared at him, before returning my eyes to where my mate disappeared into the forest. He was pointing out the obvious and it was irritating.
I will replace you, little mate. I don’t know why you tried to kill me or ran away from me but when replace you, I’ll win you over.
