Saving His Feral Mate
Chapter 44: Murderous haze

Chloe POV

I was excited to see Betty and Tom today, it felt like forever since the last time saw them and I really missed those two. I was also hoping that they would give me some advise on the Cameron situation. I wasn’t able to sleep very well last night, all I kept thinking about was how my presences here was putting the entire pack at risk.

Knox and I got up early, he had a few things to take care of before we could go see Betty and Tom, so I headed to the kitchen for breakfast.

I saw Max and Sheryl sitting at table and made my way over to join them. To my complete shock, Max was wearing a black tank top and a pair of jean shorts. My eyes nearly bulged out of my head at the sight. She wasn’t wearing a bra,but still, just the fact that she was wearing anything was a surprise. I wonder what Jo had to do to win that battle? Tatiana and I chuckled to ourselves at the thought.

“I never thought I’d see the day.” I joked, while motioning to the clothes she was wearing. I took a seat beside Sheryl and across from Max.

“Trust me, I’m not thrilled about this. These damn shorts are giving me a permanent wedgie and all because my mate didn’t like the fact that a visiting warriors was checking me out.” She grumbled and rolled her eyes, causing both Sheryl and I to chuckle.

“How are you feeling?” I asked, turning my attention to Sheryl.

“Really good actually. I had a doctors appointment this morning and everything looked great.” She replied excitedly, while rubbing a hand over her baby bump. I notice how happy she seemed and so much more confident then the first time I met her.

“That’s awesome, I’m so happy for you.” I replied with a genuine smile.

“What about Kyle? Has he been bugging you at all?” Max asked and I saw Sheryl’s smile disappear at the mention of her ex-mate.

“No, he’s been keeping his distance. I’ve gotten the odd glare from him in passing, but other then that, he’s left me alone.” She replied with a heavy sigh.

“Good. You make sure to let me know if he’s giving you a hard time. I’d be happy to put him in his place.” Max offered.

“Thanks, but I think he’s learned his lesson.” Sheryl replied with a soft smile.

“Dumbasses like him never learn their lesson.” Max mumbled under her breath.

I decided to change the subject given how uncomfortable Sheryl looked.

“Hey Max, I’m going to visit Betty and Tom today, you wanna come?” I asked.

“Oh my goddess, Yes! I’ve been missing them so much lately. Plus, can you imagine Betty’s face when she sees me show up wearing these?” Max replied while motioning to her body.

“I actually think Betty might be speechless for the first time in her life.” I joked and we both laughed.

Once we were done eating we got up to leave. Sheryl told us that she was meeting Connie for tea. I was happy to hear that she wasn’t upset with Sheryl for rejecting her son. By what Sheryl told us, Connie was actually fully supportive of her decision. She’s even offered to attend doctors appointments with Sheryl so that she wouldn’t be alone.

Once Sheryl left, Max and I headed towards Knox’s office. When we reached the door, I knocked.

“Come in.” I heard him announce.

I opened the door and found Jag and Jo sitting across from Knox. They all turned their heads in our direction to greet us.

“You look beautiful, mate.” Jo said smugly, while admiring Max’s covered body. She growled in response, before flipping him the middle finger and heading towards the couch.

“Don’t be like that.” Jo added with a chuckle, before slapping her a*s as she walked by him.

Sometimes I swear Jo has a death wish. I was surprised that Max didn’t knock him out and simply glared at him before taking a seat. I followed her and also sat down.

“When are we leaving?” I asked Knox, before Jo could dig his grave any deeper.

“I’m just waiting on a phone call, after that we can go.” He replied and I nodded.

“Do you guys have any idea where we could replace the twins today if they aren’t with Betty and Tom?” Knox asked, while looking between Max and I.

“I know a few spots where they like to hangout.” Max replied with a nod.

“Good. I want to talk to them about something.” Knox said in a serious tone.

I wondered what he wanted with the twins? I was about to ask a question when I noticed his eyes glaze over, letting me know that he was receiving a mind-link.

Within a minute, his eyes returned back to their normal colour and he abruptly stood from his chair.

“What is it?” I asked, while also standing up.

“Border patrol spotted a group of 4 rogues heading towards our border. The rogues are in human form and one appears to be severely injured. Jo, Jag, we need to go.” Knox said with a concerned frown.

Max and I started following them out of the office when Knox stopped us.

“No, you guys need to stay here it’s not safe.” Knox ordered, while intentionally standing in the doorway to prevent us from leaving.

“We’re coming with you guys. What if it’s someone we know? You just said one of them is injured.” I replied, while crossing my arms over my chest defiantly. For some reason I had a bad feeling in my gut and even Tatiana was dead set on going with them.

“Fine, but you and Max need to hold back while we replace out what they want.” He said with a defeated sigh and I nodded in agreement.

We ran out of the pack house and headed towards the border. The feeling in my gut only got worse the closer we got. If they were rogues coming to cause problems, they would of been in wolf form. The fact that they aren’t and that one of them is injured, it leads me to think that they are likely seeking help.

We ran for 10 minutes before Knox suddenly stopped. I knew we were close to reaching the border.

“Why did you stop?” I asked with a frown.

“I want you and Max to stay here, while we go replace out what they want.” Knox replied with a stern look on his face.

“Fine.” I said, not wanted to waste anymore time arguing. My heart was already racing and that concern feeling I had was only getting stronger by the second. I looked over at Max and knew that she was feeling the same way I was.

The guys started heading towards the border and as soon as they were out of sight, I looked over at Max. I didn’t have to say a word, the look on her face told me she knew exactly what I was thinking.

Max and I started walking in the same direction where the guys went. When we reached the border, I spotted Knox, Jo, Jag and 4 warriors standing in a line facing away from us. In the distance, I could make out 3 bodies walking towards us. One of them was carrying what looked to be another person. It only took a minute before I was able to recognize who they were. It was the twins, Betty and Tom, but Tom was being carried by one of the twins. My heart sank at sight and fear quickly washed over me.

Without waiting another second, I took off running towards my friends and could feel Max right behind me.

“Chloe, wait!” I heard Knox’s shout, when I ran past him and crossed the border.

I ran faster than I’ve ever ran, they were still 50 feet away from us. The closer I got, the more fearful I became. They were all covered in b***d and I could see that Tom was unconscious in Parker’s arms. Betty was limping and her body was covered in cuts and bruises. She was sobbing and holding onto Tom’s hand.

“What the hell happened?” I shouted when we finally reached them. I got a better look at Tom and noticed that he had several large gashes on his body, they looked deep and they didn’t appear to be healing. It was clear that he was losing a lot of b***d.

“He needs a doctor, please help him.” Betty pleaded, while tears poured freely from her eyes.

“Follow me, we can take him to the pack hospital. I’ve already mind-linked the doctor.” Knox replied from behind me. That’s when I realized that he had followed us off his territory.

“Betty, please let me carry you. We’ll get there faster that way.” Preston asked with pleading eyes. It was clear Betty didn’t want to let go of Tom’s hand, but she knew Preston was right so she gave in and agreed to be carried. Preston let out a relieve sigh, before scooping Betty up in his arms.

Knox led the way and we all ran towards the hospital.

When we finally arrive, I was relieved to see the doctor and a team of nurses waiting for us. Betty and Tom were immediately whisked away to be treated. One of the nurses started looking over Parker and Preston for injuries until they stopped her and said they were fine. They were covered in b***d but confirmed it wasn’t theirs.

We were left in the waiting room, while the doctors and nurses attended to Betty and Tom.

“Who did this?” Knox was the one to finally ask. I could see the conflict in both the twins eyes and they looked at me before answering. That was all it took for me to know who was responsible, it was Alpha Cameron.

“Some of Alpha Cameron’s men.” Parker said confirming my thoughts, while letting out a heavy sigh.

“We kept one of them alive long enough for him to tell us what they were doing there. I guess Cameron has been keeping a close eye on your border, hoping to snag Chloe leaving the territory. While scoping the area, they came across Betty and Tom’s cabin. They were trying to beat information out of them when parker and I showered up. If we hadn’t, they definitely would of killed them. I’m actually not sure if Tom will pull through, he’s in pretty rough shape. They used a silver dagger on him, his healing is substantial slower because of it.” Preston explained but as he spoke, his words became distant.

I could feel my whole body trembling with rage. I knew people were talking around me, but I could no longer make out what was being said. All I could see was red, I wanted b***d on my hands, Cameron’s b***d.

‘I WILL f*****g KILL HIM!’ Tatiana seethed in my head, while trying to take control. But I didn’t let her, not this time. I wanted to kill Cameron myself.

My feet started moving on their own accord and the only thought going through my mind was getting revenge.

“Chloe, where are you going?” I heard a distant male voice ask, before a hand gently wrapped around my arm. I yanked my arm free, without looking back and continued towards the hospital doors.

Now I could hear several distant voices, both male and female, but I still couldn’t make out what they were saying. I was consumed by anger and the only thing running through my mind, was how I planned on killing Cameron in a slow and painful way.

I pushed the front doors open and walked outside. I felt like a robot that had been programmed to kill. I started running towards the tree line when I felt a strong hand grip my upper arm. Whoever it was, was trying to stop me and I wasn’t going to let that happen.

I was so lost in my murderous haze, that I didn’t even recognize the sparks shooting through body from my mate’s touch. In that moment, he was nothing but an obstacle preventing me from accomplish my goal.

He had a firm hold on my arm but it was clear he didn’t want to hurt me. It only took one hard yank for me to break free. I continued running towards the border, but I didn’t make it far before I was tackled from behind.

My eyes instinctively closed and I waiting for the hard impact of my face hitting the ground, but it never came. Instead, I landed against a hard surface but on my back.

I opened my eyes and quickly realized that Knox’s was the one who tackled me. He had flipped us around midair and took the brunt of the impact. I was now laying on top of him and his arms were clasped firmly around my body, pinning my arms to the sides. He snaked one of his legs over my legs and I was completely locked in place. His actions had slightly snapped me out of the murderous haze, but I was still consumed with anger.

“Let go of me! I need to f*****g kill him.” I seethed, while wiggling and bucking my body in an attempt to break free.

“No. I won’t let you go.” He replied calmly, but I could feel his heart beating erratically.

“You once told me you’d never force me to stay here, so let me go.” I spat out, with venom lacing my words. I was angry and in that moment, anyone trying to stop me was an enemy.

“I’ll never force you to be with me, but I’m not letting you go on a suicide mission. You can hate me for the rest of your life, but I still won’t let you go.” He said firmly, but I could hear the pain in his voice.

“Leave us!” He commanded with an edge of authority in his tone.

That’s when I noticed we weren’t alone. Max, the twins, Jag, Jo and the 4 warriors had also ran after me. They were now standing only a few feet away watching our interaction. The warriors looked mortified, only because they didn’t know we were mates. Everyone else looked concerned.

Upon hearing Knox’s command, they quickly turned and left, except for Max. She hesitated for a minute with a conflicted look on her face, but eventually like the rest, turned around and left us. I wanted to scream at her for help, but from the sad look in her eye, I knew she wouldn’t do anything.

“I f*****g love you, Chloe. I’m only doing this for your own good, your not thinking straight right now. I promise you’ll get your revenge, but it won’t happen today.” He said calmly, right next to my ear.

I had stopped struggling by this point and new emotions started taking over, the main one being despair. I started sobbing as an image of my dying mother flashed in my mind, followed by an image of Tom’s unconscious body being carried by Parker, while his battered mate held onto his hand like it was the only thing keeping him alive.

I felt darkness invading my my vision and the last thing I heard before it consumed me, was Knox whispering “I love you” into my ear.
