Saving His Feral Mate
Chapter 46: Tom’s condition

Chloe POV

It’s been two days since Tom and Betty arrived. Although Tom’s healing has been slow, the doctor said that he was getting better and would make a full recovery. It was a huge relief for all of us, but especially Betty. She’s been by his side the entire time and I could tell she was worried for her mate. Between Max and I, someone always stayed with her at the hospital.

I had a conversation with Betty and told her about everything that has been going on, including the threat form Alpha Cameron and Alec. She reluctantly agreed to stay on Knox’s territory until everything settled down.

Knox had one of the cabins on the edge of his territory cleaned and stocked, so that when Tom was healthy enough to leave the hospital they could move in. I knew Betty would appreciate that the cabin was far away from the pack house. The only wolves that ever venture that way was border patrol.

I still don’t know Betty and Tom’s story, but they don’t seem to like Alphas very much. I don’t push them on the subject, I figured if they wanted to tell me what happened, they would.

The twins left as soon as the doctors gave us an update on Tom’s status. They said that they had business to take care of. They had been acting odd when they were in the hospital, almost as though they were looking for something. When I asked them what was wrong, they brushed me off and avoided the question. I thought their behaviour was a little strange, but I let it go. Maybe they were just being protective and making sure the hospital was safe, who knows.

I made my way into the kitchen and started preparing lunch for Betty and I. I was going to bring it to hospital so she didn’t have to leave Tom’s room.

“Chloe, right?” I heard a male voice ask from behind me. I looked over my shoulder and found Frederick, Knox’s dad walking into the kitchen.

“That’s right.” I replied with a forced smile. I got a sense that the man didn’t really like me, or maybe it was my rogue status that made him leery. Either way, I felt uncomfortable around him. It always felt like he was intentionally let his Alpha aura seep out when he was around me. It didn’t affect me, but I still didn’t appreciate the show of dominance.

“Have you enjoyed your stay on our territory?” He asked, while opened the fridge to retrieve a bottle of water.

“I have, thank you.” I replied shortly.

“How long do you plan on staying with us?” He asked and now I felt like he was interrogating me.

“I’m not sure.” I replied, while wrapping the sandwich I had been making in plastic wrap.

“Knox never told me, how do you guys know each other?” He asked curiously, causing my eyebrows to furrow. Where was he going with all the questions?

“We’re friends.” I replied, once again in a short tone.

“Dear, leave the poor girl alone.” I heard a female voice and looked back to see Connie walking onto the kitchen.

“I was just making small talk.” Frederick replied innocently.

“It’s nice to see you again, Chloe.” Connie said with a genuine smile.

“You too.” I replied with my own smile.

“Where’s my son?” She asked casually.

“He’s in his office. I think he’s going over the arrangements for the Alpha meeting tomorrow.” I replied.

“What? I should be included in that meeting.” Frederick grumbled, before storming out of kitchen.

“Don’t mind him, he struggles with giving up control. Sometimes I feel like he still thinks he’s the Alpha.” Connie said with a dry chuckle, while shaking her head in disbelief.

“So dear, we haven’t really gotten a chance to talk much. How has everything been going with you and my son?” She asked with a curious glint in her eyes.

Her words made me pause what I was doing and look up at her. By the look on her face it was clear she knew we were mates.

“Ummmm…Things are good.” I replied awkwardly.

“No need to be shy with me, we’re practically family now.” She added with a chuckle. Yup, that confirms it, she knows. I didn’t reply, I simply stared at her with my mouth slightly open in shock.

“I know the Alpha meeting is tomorrow, but maybe later in the week we can all have dinner together? I would love to get to know you better.” She asked with a hopeful smile.

“Sure, I’d like that.” I replied, even though it was a lie. I like Connie, she seems really nice, but her mate is still questionable and don’t even get me started on Kyle. I hope she doesn’t invite him for dinner.

“Great, I’ll be in touch and we can pick a date that works for everyone.” She replied enthusiastically.

“I better go replace my grumbly mate.” She said with an eye roll, before gently patting me on the shoulder and leaving the kitchen.

I let out a relieved sigh when I was finally alone, before putting the food into a reusable grocery bag and leaving the pack house.

I reached the hospital and headed to Tom’s room. When I got to the door, I knocked gently before opening it.

Betty was sitting beside Tom, stroking his hair with her hand. She smiled when she saw me walk into the room.

“I brought you lunch.” I announced and I showed her the bag.

“Thank you, Chloe.” She replied with a soft smile.

“You look tired Betty, why don’t you take a nap and I can watch over Tom for you.” I offered, while sitting down next to her and unwrapped one of the sandwiches.

“Oh for heaven sakes, not you too? I’m fine Chloe, I swear.” She snapped.

“Ok… I was just offering.” I replied with wide eyes, while putting my hands up in mock surrender. I was a little taken aback by her snappy attitude.

“Sorry Chloe, I’m a little on edge. The nurses around here have been driving me crazy. Can you believe that one of them had the nerve to walk in here, with a bucket of water and a sponge? Like, did she really think I was going to let her give my mate a sponge bath?” She asked, while shaking her head in disbelief.

“That poor girl, what did you do to her?” I asked while laughing.

“Pffttt… Poor girl? She needs to keep her paws to herself. How would you feel if a she-wolf tried to give your mate a sponge bath?” She questioned and I unintentionally growled at the thought.

“Exactly.” She chuckled.

“Knox hasn’t marked you yet?” She asked curiously, but it was more of a statement.

“No, he wants to make sure I’m ready first.” I replied and she nodded.

“Good, I’m glad he’s still being patient with you. He certainly has good control over his wolf for being able to hold off this long.” She remarked.

“He’s been really good to me.” I admitted.

“Do you think you’re ready to move on, after everything Cameron put you through?” She asked and I could hear the pity in her voice.

“Honestly, I don’t know. I thought I was getting there, but then all this happened. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to move on while Cameron’s still alive. The man haunts my dreams and I’m constantly looking over my shoulder. Don’t get me wrong, I really like Knox, but right now I want revenge more than I want a mate.” I admitted with a frustrated sigh.

“That’s understandable, Chloe. My advice though, don’t shut him out because of Cameron. I never thought I would say this, but I trust Knox with your heart. The guy loves you there’s no doubt about that.” She replied truthfully and I nodded.

“I’m worried that by me staying here, I’m putting him and his entire pack at risk.” I confessed.

“You’re the Luna of this pack, Chloe. They would lay their lives down protecting you. I know you’re use to being a lone wolf, but you aren’t anymore. You have people that care about you, let him help.” She replied.

“His pack doesn’t know that I’m his mate yet.” I admitted.

“I think you guys should tell them, especially with a war on the horizon.” She advised with an encouraging nod. I didn’t say anything else, I simple pondered her words.

I was brought out of my thoughts when I heard a m**n. I looked over at Tom and noticed that he was starting to stir.

“Tom my love, are you awake?” Betty asked breathlessly, while standing from her chair and leaning over his body to observe his face.

I saw his eyes slowly open, before they locked with Betty’s.

“Tom, can you hear me?” Betty asked, while cupping his cheeks with her hands.

“Who are you?” He asked in a dry raspy voice.

“You don’t recognize me?” She said in a shocked tone and before he replied, a playful smile appeared on his face.

“I could never forget your beautiful face, Betty.” He replied with a light chuckle that turned into a dry cough.

“Don’t ever scare me like that again.” She scolded, while swatting his chest.

I couldn’t help but smile at their interaction. They had the best relationship and it was obvious how much they adored each other.

“I’m glad to see you’re ok.” I said to Tom and made my way over to the other side of the bed, before leaning down and giving him a gently hug.

“Chloe, I missed you.” He replied.

“Where are we?” He asked, when I pulled away from the hug.

“The hospital on Knox’s territory.” I replied and he nodded.

“I’m going to get the doctor, I’ll be right back.” Betty announced, before running out of the room.

“Alpha Cameron, he’s looking for you. He has a lot of men out there waiting.” Tom warned with a concern frown.

“I know he does, but I’m safe here. You don’t need to worry about me, Tom.” I replied with a reassuring smile.

“I’ll always worry about you. You and Max are like daughters to me.” He admitted.

“And you’re like a father to me.” I replied, while leaning down and kissing his forehead.

A few minutes later, Betty came back into the room with the doctor.

“It’s good to see you awake, how are you feeling?” The doctor asked Tom, while taking his vitals.

“Like I’ve been run over by a truck.” Tom replied, with another chuckle that sounded more like a cough.

“That’s understandable, you were in rough shape when you first got here. The silver didn’t help your healing.” The doctor said.

“When can I leave?” Tom asked, while trying to sit up.

“Woaw… Not so fast. You’ll need to stay here a few days. I want to make sure the silver is fully out of your system before you leave.” The doctor replied, while gently pushing Tom back down on the bed. Tom let out a frustrated sigh, but didn’t argue.

“Everything looks good. I’ll let you get some rest and come back to check on you a little later.” The doctor said and Tom nodded before the doctor left the room.

“I hate hospitals.” Tom grumbled, causing Betty and I to laugh.

“You missed out. Betty made a nurse cry for trying to give you a sponge bath.” I joked.

“Damn, why did you stop her?” Tom asked Betty, earning him another slap on the chest.

“I swear to the moon goddess, I’ll put you back in that coma.” Betty threatened.

“I’m just kidding my love.” Tom replied, before pulling Betty down on top of him and kissing her passionately.

“Get a room.” I mumbled, as a turned around to give them some privacy and heard them both laugh in response.

I felt relieved knowing that Tom was ok. It was like a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders. Now I just need to make sure that Cameron doesn’t hurt anyone else.
