Saving His Feral Mate -
Chapter 48: Alpha meeting part 2
Knox POV
I glared at Alpha Alec who stood in front of me with a smug expression on his face. He waiting a minutes for the whispers in the room to fade before he continued.
“Not all of you are aware, but my previous Beta was viciously murder in his sleep a few years ago. His fated mate, Max, was the one to commit this heinous crime and she fled my territory before we could apprehend her.” He explained calmly, while keeping his eyes locked with mine. I knew he wanted a reaction out of me, but he wasn’t going to get one.
“We’ve been trying to track her down for years with no luck, it seems as though she’s good at hiding.” He added.
“If it’s been years, why bring it up now?” Alpha Victor snarled from his seat. He wasn’t one to hide his distaste for certain people.
“Awww… I’m glad you asked, Alpha Victor. I recently received information from a reliable source, that Alpha Knox is housing a couple rogue she-wolves. I know, Max, my Beta’s murderer, has been living as a rogue since she fled my territory. I’m seeking cooperation from Alpha Knox in my investigation. I would like an opportunity to meet the rogues staying on his territory to ensure he’s not unknowingly harbouring a criminal.” He said, while silently challenging me with his eyes to deny his request. To say I was furious, was an understatement. This a*****e knew exactly what he was doing. There was noway I could say no.
“Alpha Knox? Do you have any problems with his request?” Brett, one of the elders asked, when I didn’t reply right away.
“I’ve already had a discussion with Alpha Alec over the phone. Neither of the she-wolves that were staying on my territory match the description he provided. Also, since having that conversation with him, one of the she-wolves has left and is no longer staying on my land.” I replied and could tell he didn’t believe me, but he wasn’t going call me out on it, not without having to reveal his source. Which I was actually hoping he would do, I desperately wanted to know who the snake within my pack was.
“That’s true, we did have that conversation. But I’m concerned she could have changed her appearance to avoid being caught.” Alpha Alec countered. The room was silent and everyone was watching our interaction intently.
“I will allow you to meet the she-wolf staying with me, on one condition.” I finally replied.
“What may that be?” He asked curiously with his head tilted to the side.
“If she does end up being who you’re looking for, I want the council to be in charge of the investigation and trial.” I replied pointedly.
“That’s absurd, this is not a matter that requires the council’s involvement. The investigation has already been completed and all evidence points to her.” He replied, his smug demeanour was long gone and was now replaced with anger.
“That’s my condition, take it or leave it.” I replied firmly.
“We have no problem conducting an investigation if the she-wolf turns out to be the accused.” Brett added.
“Fine, I agree to your condition. But, Alpha Knox…” Alec scoffed and paused to make sure he had my full attention.
“If I replace out you’re hiding, Max, there will be consequences.” He threatened.
“Are in implying that I’m lying? Don’t you dare threaten me, mutt.” I gritted out, while standing from my chair. Neither one of us spoke, but our eyes remained locked in a silent fight for dominance. Tension filled the room, as our Alpha aura rolled out in waves.
“That’s enough! We will make arrangements for alpha Alec to meet the rogue she-wolf staying on your territory, Alpha Knox. If that’s all Alpha Alec, let’s move on.” Tanner, another one of the elders was the one to intervene.
I said what I needed to say.” Alec replied, as he averted his eyes from mine and took his seat.
I sat back down in my chair and slid my hand into my pocket, before gripping the locket Chloe had given me.
‘You alright?’ Jag asked through the mind-link.
‘Ya, but we need to call Jo and give him a heads up about, Max.’ I replied.
‘When we take a break I’ll slip away to call him.’ He said and I didn’t bother to reply.
I almost lost control and my mate wasn’t even mentioned. I’m serious starting to question if I’ll be able reign in my wolf if someone brings her up.
The meeting continued after my altercation with Alec. I was no longer paying attention to what was being said, the only thing going through my mind was his threat. We needed to replace a safe place to hide Max, at least until we could prove that her actions against her first mate were justified.
Jag left the room during the break and called Jo. Once he came back in, he told me through mind-link that Jo was furious. I was relieved that I didn’t bring him with us, he definitely would have lost control and that would have been bad.
Cameron didn’t say a word throughout the meeting, but I could feel his eyes on me the entire time.
The day went by painfully slow and we finally wrapped up the meeting at 6:30pm. I couldn’t wait for dinner to be over so that we could leave.
Everyone left the conference room and headed for the restaurant, except for Jag and I. I needed a minute to calm myself down before I saw those two assholes again.
“f**k! What are we going to do?” Jag asked defeatedly, when we were finally alone.
“I don’t know, but for now we need to hide Max.” I replied with a heavy sigh.
“Dude, you almost lost it.’ He pointed out, while running his fingers through his hair.
“I know.” I breathed out.
“You sure you can stay in control?” He asked with a frown.
“No, but I’ll try.” I replied truthfully.
“Just try avoiding them and we can leave right after dinner.” He said and I nodded.
We left the conference room and made our way to the restaurant. Once we entered the room, we found everyone standing around in small groups mingling.
I scanned the crowd and frowned when I didn’t see Cameron or Alec. I was starting to worry that maybe they had left.
“They’re outside having their own private meeting.” I heard a familiar voice answer my thoughts and turned around to see Victor standing behind me.
“Thank you.” I replied. Victor looked at me curiously, but didn’t say anything further. He simply nodded his head and went to sit at a table. Our conversation left me puzzled, why did he bother answering my thoughts?
Jag and I sat at a table with our warriors and Alpha Trent, of the Crescent Valley Pack. His pack was rather small and they kept mostly to themselves. Their territory was located in the mountains and they rarely left. The only reason he came to the meeting was because of a rogue problem he was having.
Dinner was about to be served, when Alec and Cameron walked into the room. They sat at the table next to ours and it instantly made my wolf restless.
I didn’t eat much and barely said a word during dinner. I could hear Cameron and Alec talking in hushed voices, but I couldn’t make out what was being said.
Once dinner was over, Jag and I got up and said our good byes. We were about to leave when two of the elders stopped us, Brett and Tanner.
“Alpha Knox, Beta Jagger, how about a drink.” Brett suggested with a friendly smile.
“We were actually just leaving.” I replied shortly.
“Already? The evening has just begun, you must stay for a drink.” Tanner suggested.
“Sure, one drink.” I replied in defeat, before we made our way to the bar.
I ordered a glass of scotch on the rocks and Jag did the same. The elders already had drinks in hand.
“So Alpha Knox, tell me about this rogue she-wolf you’ve allowed onto your territory?” Brett asked casually and I instantly clenched my jaw. I hated hearing Chloe referred to as a rogue. I knew he meant nothing by it, but it still irritated me.
“She’s a friend of a friend, that’s it.” I replied vaguely.
“Do you know what pack she came from before turning rogue?” Tanner asked curiously.
“No.” I said shortly, wishing they would drop the subject and as if he could read my mind, Brett did exactly that.
“Mmmm…Have you put anymore thought into picking a chosen mate?” He asked and his question only added to my irritation.
“I will be announcing my mate to the pack soon.” I replied and saw his face light up excitedly.
“What about yourself, Beta? Have you found your mate?” Tanner asked.
“No I haven’t.” Jag replied with a defeated sigh.
“Excuse me gentlemen. Elder Clayton wants to speak with us.” Brett said and I turned my head to see Clayton waving them over. I nodded at the two elders, before they left us alone at the bar.
“Let’s get out of here.” I said to Jag and he nodded.
I turned around ready to leave, only to come face to face with Cameron. f**k! This was not good.
“Leaving already?” He taunted.
“Move.” I growled, but he didn’t budge.
“There’s something I wanted to discuss with you first.” He replied and I knew I wasn’t going to like what he had to say. My wolf was going berserk in my head.
“Now isn’t the time.” I warned and stepped around him to leave.
“You think you can keep my mate from me and I’m just going to let it happen?” He snarled, making me stop abruptly and turn to face him.
“He’s trying to get under your skin, don’t let him.” Jag tried reasoning, but my anger had taken over and I was losing my last bit of control.
“You know it’s a crime to keep a wolf form his mate.” He added.
“She isn’t your mate.” I growled.
“Did my mate forget to mention me? I’ll have to have a word with her about that.” He replied with a smirk.
“She’s my mate, only mine!” I roared, but it wasn’t my voice it was my wolf.
Cameron’s eyes widened for a fraction of a second before he quickly recomposed himself. I was internally cursing myself for telling him, that information was not yet public knowledge.
“No wonder she hasn’t come home. It seems like that w***e has been busy spreading her legs for just about anyone.” He spat out and that was it, the last string holding my control together snapped and my wolf took over. Fur started sprouting on my arms and neck, while my canines elongated.
I had started to shift, when suddenly I caught movement at the corner of my eye that made me pause. Xander had rushed pass me and grabbed Cameron by the collar of his shirt, before punching him in the face. As soon as his fist made contact, I heard the sound of bones crunching. He continued to administered blow after blow. It was clear he caught Cameron off guard, he didn’t even get a chance to fight back.
I was left confused, wondering what could have set Xander off? Was it Cameron talking trash about Chloe? That would mean one of two things, he had a crush on her or… My thoughts were interrupted when I heard someone speak.
“Restrain him.” Brett commanded and I watch four warriors grab ahold of Xander and pull him off Cameron. Xander had a smug look on his face, while looking down at Cameron’s bloodied face.
“That look suits you.” He mocked.
“Enough! Take him away.” Brett ordered angrily and the guards starting walking away pulling Xander along with them.
I saw Alpha Victor glare at his son in disapproval, but I also thought I saw a flash of pride in his eyes. I might be mistaken about that part though.
‘Well s**t, I wasn’t expecting that. What do you think they’re going to do with Xander?’ Jag asked through the mind-link.
‘f**k if I know. All I can say is that he saved me from getting my a*s in trouble. I was shifting when he jumped in. He didn’t shift, so I doubt he’ll get in that much trouble.’ I replied.
‘Let’s get out of here while everyone’s distracted.’ I added and we both started making our way towards the door.
“I’ll be by tomorrow.” I heard a familiar voice announce and cringed when I recognized it as, Alec.
“Don’t bother.” I gritted out, as I turned to face him.
“Why is that?” He asked nonchalantly.
“ I think it’s pretty clear that the she-wolf staying with me, is Cameron’s ex-mate and not who you’re looking for.” I spat out angrily and saw an amused smirk spread across his face.
“Indeed, it seems like you’re right. Please do contact me if you come across Max.” He replied with a smirk. I knew he was toying with me. He had no intentions of coming to see Chloe, he just wanted to get a reaction out of me.
Without replying, I shoved pass him and headed for the door. I needed to get out of there and fast.
Once we were outside we waited 5 minutes before the valet attendant brought our vehicles out.
Jag and I got into one of the SUV and the warriors got in the other. We quickly sped out of there and made our way home. I let out a relieved sigh when we were finally on the road. I couldn’t wait to wrap Chloe in my arms.
My thoughts were interrupted when my cellphone started to ring.
I quickly retrieved it from my pocket and saw Jo’s name flash across the display. I started getting worried it was almost midnight. He would only call me at this time if something happened.
