Saving His Feral Mate -
Chapter 57: I can’t lose him
Preston POV
Things weren’t looking good for us, we were completely outnumbered by Cameron and his men. I knew we lost a few of our guys in the battle, I had spotted their lifelessly bodies laying on the ground amongst a few of Cameron’s. It killed me that I couldn’t help them, but the five wolves that were attacking me weren’t letting up. I’m strong and all, but five against one was just ridiculous.
Even though this was a losing battle, I wasn’t going down without a fight. I would fight till my very last breath. The idea of never meeting my beautiful mate tore at my heart, but there was nothing I could do about that. I just prayed that the moon goddess would take care of her for us.
I had two wolves latched onto my back and few more trying to bite at any part of my flesh that they could sink their teeth into. The adrenaline running through my veins prevented me from feeling pain. I bucked my body like an angry bull which luckily did the trick. The two wolves on my back where thrown off and that gave me a chance to regain the upper hand.
I was about to launch myself at a beige wolf, when suddenly I heard a gun shot. I turned my head just in time to watch my brother’s wolf leaping through the air in front of me, before his limp body fell to the ground.
I raised my eyes to see Cameron smirking at me with a gun in his hand. I was angry before, but this was a whole different level. I was furious now, I could already taste his b***d on my tongue. He had just shot my brother and I wanted his head for that. I wasn’t even sure if my brother was still alive, I was surrounded by wolves who were preventing me from getting to him. Rage coursed through my body and I felt completely helpless.
Cameron pointed the gun at me and was about to pull the trigger. When all of a sudden, wolves charged into the fight and chaos erupted. The new arrivals were taking out Cameron’s men left, right and centre. It didn’t take long for me to recognize that the new arrivals were Knox and his men.
I quickly scanned the crowd and couldn’t spot Cameron anywhere. Where the f**k did that Wiesel go? I literally only looked away for a few seconds and he had already disappeared.
Knox had brought quite the army with him, it only took a few minutes for them to dominate the fight. While they were taking care of the last of Cameron’s men, I turned my attention towards Parker. He was now laying in his human form, naked and unconscious. There was a lot of b***d around his abdomen and the sight alone horrified me. I can’t lose my brother, he was the only family I had left. I’d be completely lost without him.
I shifted into my human form and quickly knelt down beside him. I pressed my fingers to his neck and found a pulse, but it was faint. I knew right away that the bullet was made of silver, I could smell it and it was obvious from the angry red burn marks that surround the wound.
“How is he?” I heard Knox ask from somewhere behind me.
“He’s alive, but barely. The bullet was made of silver so if we don’t get it out of his system soon, he won’t make it.” I replied without looking back at him.
“I notified our doctor, he’s waiting at the hospital. Let’s bring him back.” Knox suggested, before handing me a pair of shorts and I nodded.
I slipped on the shorts, before quickly scooping my brother up in my arms. I ran towards the border and could hear several footsteps behind me, I knew everyone else was following.
I didn’t even know how many of our men we lost or how many were injured, the only thing running through my mind was my brothers well-being. I needed him to pull through, I don’t think I could survive without him. He’s my twin, we are practically the same person and if I lost him, it would be like loosing a part of my soul. He hasn’t even had a chance to meet our mate yet. Please let him pull through, I silently prayed to the moon goddess.
We reached the hospital in no time. Like Knox promised, the doctor and nurses were already waiting for us. I gently laid Parker down on one of the stretchers, before the nurses quickly wheeled him into the operating room. I wanted to go with him, but Knox stopped me.
“Let them do their job, he’s in good hands.” Knox said, while blocking me from following them. I growled, not at him, but at the situation. I didn’t want to leave his side, he needed me. Hell, I needed him right now.
“He’s all I have, I can’t lose him.” I said as tears filled my eyes. The reality of the situation was sinking in and it scared the crap out of me.
“He’s a fighter Preston, if anyone can pull through it’s Parker.” This time Max was the one to speak. She walked up to me and gave me a comforting hug. As much as I appreciated the gesture, I couldn’t help but wish that it was my mate comforting me.
“How many men did we lose?” I asked. Now that I was looking around the room, I noticed a few more of our men being wheeled away on stretchers.
“Three.” Jo replied in a somber tone.
“F**k.” I cursed.
I finally took a minute to assess everyone else. Max’s body was littered with cuts and bruises, but they all seemed superficial for the most part. Jo was glued to her side and was busy assessing her wounds. You could see the concern in his eyes. I don’t blame him, I’d feel the same way if she was my mate.
Jo had a couple cuts, but nothing substantial. The three other guys had more serious injuries but nothing that appeared life threatening. The doctor was going to clean them up and treat them to be on the safe side.
“What about Cameron, please tell me someone killed that piece of shit.” I growled and everyone looked away from me. It was clearly they didn’t want to answer the question.
“He got away.” Knox eventually replied and as he said the words my fist connected with the wall.
“He’s nothing but a coward.” I seethed.
My entire body was trembling with rage, not only was my brother on his death bed, but Cameron got away. That coward left his men to be slaughtered, while he ran away like a little b***h. My emotions were boiling over and I was close to losing control.
The only reason I wasn’t going after Cameron, was because my brother needed me. I couldn’t leave his side, not now. The council better do something about Cameron because if they don’t, I’ll be taking matters into my own hands and a lot of b***d will be shed. That’s a promise.

Knox POV
Chloe and I had just gone to bed when I received a mind-link. I knew it was from Jo, but he sounded muffled and I couldn’t actually understand what he was saying.
I immediately jumped out of bed and explained to Chloe what was happened. She wanted to come with me, but didn’t argue when I asked her to stay home. She could see the concern on my face and I was glad that she didn’t insist on coming. I had a bad feeling about this. What if Cameron and Alec were attacking us tonight? Maybe they hit the twins camp first before making it to our border?
I knew something was wrong the moment I got the link. For one, Jo wouldn’t be mind-linking me at that time of night unless it was important. Secondly, he knew we were too far apart to properly communicate through the link, which was another indication that whatever was happening was urgent. If it wasn’t urgent, he would have used his cellphone.
I immediately linked my warriors and updated them on what happened. I asked them to meet me outside the pack house. I left Jag and a handful of warriors behind to protect the women and children while the rest of the warriors came with me. I wasn’t taking any chances, if this was the big fight, I wanted all my warriors ready.
We shifted into our wolves and ran through the forest. I knew where the twins had set up camp and since Jo and Max were suppose to be staying with them, that’s where we headed. I just hoped we weren’t too late.
As we got closer, I could smell wolves and not just rogues. My men and I were immediately on high alert. I could hear snarling and thrashing, it was clear that there was a fight going on.
We kept pushing forward until the fight came into view. I noticed everyone was in their wolf form except for one person, Cameron. He had a gun pointed at a large grey wolf and before I could do anything, he pulled the trigger. As he did, another larger grey wolf jumped in the line of fire and took the round in the abdomen.
It didn’t take me long to figure out that the two grey wolves were the twins. The one that was shot fell to the ground and the injury forced his body to shift into his human form. He was now laying on the ground, unconscious and covered in b***d.
I immediately linked my men to attack. I could see that Jo, Max and a couple others were severely outnumbered, they wouldn’t have lasted long if we hadn’t shown up when we did.
I scanned the crowed for Cameron, but of course he was nowhere to be found. He must have taken off as soon as he noticed our presence. f**k!
It didn’t take us long to kill the rest of his men. We figured a couple got away with him, but we managed to kill 22 of them.
Once the fighting was over, we rushed Parker to the hospital. He was definitely in rough shape, not only did he lose a lot of b***d, but the silver was spreading through his b***d stream and was slowly killing him.
Preston was livid, but I couldn’t blame him. Him and Parker were extremely close and I could only imagine what was going through his mind.
I had mind-linked Chloe when we got back and updated her on what happened. She insisted on coming to the hospital. I didn’t mind if she did, it would make me feel better to have her closer right now. Especially knowing that Cameron got away. I was glad that we were finally mated, now we could at least communicate with each other through the mind-link.
After we waited in silence for several hours in the waiting room, the doctor came out to give us an update.
“Alpha.” The doctor greeted with a nod.
“Doctor, how’s he doing?“ I asked, getting straight to the point. I noticed that Preston had jumped to his feet as soon as the doctor came into the room.
“I managed to remove the bullet and he received a b***d transfusion. He’s not out of the woods yet, but we’ve done everything we could for him. If he makes it through the night, I would say he stands a good chance of pulling through. He was extremely lucky that the bullet didn’t hit any of his vital organs.” The doctor reported. I saw Preston let out a relieved breath. It might not have been the best news, but at least he still had a fighting chance.
“Can I see him?” Preston asked and his voice sounded pained.
“Yes, but he needs to rest. Only two visitors at a time.” The doctor replied.
“Thank you, Doctor.” I said and the doctor nodded before leaving us in the waiting room.
“I’ll come with you.” Max offered, before grabbing Preston’s arm and leading them through the doors towards Parker’s room.
Once they were out of the room, I made my way over to Jo who was sitting down with his head between his hands.
“You alright brother?” I asked, before taking a seat next to him.
“f**k, no. I thought I was going to lose Max tonight, Knox.” He stated and his voice was broken up.
“I’m sorry we didn’t get the faster.” I replied.
“It’s not your fault, it was just scary that’s all. I kept trying to get to her but couldn’t. Every time I saw one of those wolves bite her, it enraged me but I couldn’t do anything about it. She was fighting off five wolves at one point, it was ridiculous. I felt completely helpless.” He said with a defeated sigh.
“She’s one hell of a fighter though.” I said truthfully, making him chuckle lightly.
“That she is.” He replied while shaking his head in disbelief.
I could only imagine what was going through his mind. If that had been Chloe, I would have been losing my mind trying to protect her. I’m just glad that Max and Jo are safe. I also really hope that Parker can pull through, I’ve really taken a liking to the the twins.
