Saving His Feral Mate -
Chapter 71: Who tipped them off?
Knox POV
Tonight wasn’t easy, I could feel Chloe’s emotions through the bond as she talked to her father, Xander and Victor. I wanted to comfort her, but knew she needed the time alone with them. As hard as it was, I fought the urge to interrupt her.
I was caught off guard at the end of the night when Victor brought up an alliance. I guess with everything going on, I hadn’t even thought about the fact that Chloe being related to them would have a huge impact on both our packs.
I still couldn’t believe that Chloe was the rightful heir to their pack. To say I was relieved when I heard she didn’t want the title was an understatement. I was glad to hear that she was happy by my side, ruling our pack with me.
We were half way to our territory and had just gotten off the main road. The road we were now travelling on was a secluded dirt road. It was narrow and ran through the dense forest surrounding our land.
I couldn’t wait to get home. It had been a long night for the both of us and I was completely exhausted. It was already past midnight by the time we hit the road, so the only light that illuminated the sky was the moon.
I glanced over at Chloe who was lost in her own thoughts as she looked out the passenger side window. When I brought my eyes forward, I was forced to slam on the brakes when I caught a flash of something large dart in front of the SUV.
“What’s wrong?” Chloe asked after having to brace her hands against the dashboard because of the abrupt stop.
“Something just ran in front of the vehicle.” I replied while looking from side to side trying to see what it was.
I was getting an uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach, whatever ran in front of us was big. Then it hit me, the scent of rogues. s**t.
I quickly started to drive away, while mind-linking my warriors behind us to remain on high alert.
“You smell that?” Chloe asked and I could hear the concern in her voice.
“Rogues.” I replied, while continuing to scan the forest around us for any signs of danger.
We were about to pass a fork in the road, when suddenly I was blinded by headlights. I heard an engine revving before something crashed head on with our vehicle at a high rate of speed. I knew it was another vehicle by the force of the crash.
“f**k! Are you ok?” I asked Chloe. The airbags had deployed and she was fighting to push it away from her face.
“Ya, I’m alright.” She replied, while coughing on the fumes from the crash.
“Stay in the car, I’m going to see what they want.” I said firmly as I opened my door. My warriors were already out of their vehicle and running over to join me.
It was hard to see with all the smoke from the accident. Once my warriors were at my side, we started moving towards the vehicle that was imbedded into the front of mine.
“It’s a shame you only brought four warriors with you, Alpha. They aren’t going to be much help tonight.” I heard a gruff voice taunt me from somewhere behind the vehicle that crashed with mine. I didn’t recognize the voice, but because of the overwhelming stench, I knew he was a rogue.
“What do you want?” I spat out the question.
“We were paid a pretty penny to take you and your b***h out. It was an offer we just couldn’t refuse.” He replied calmly before stepping into view. He looked to be in his mid 40’s with greasy, shoulder length brown hair. He was tall, but skinny and when he smiled I noticed his rotten teeth.
Someone had tipped them off that we were out tonight and they were waiting for us. I didn’t have much time to think about it before 15-20 more rogues came out of the bushes and surround us.
This wasn’t good, we were severely outnumbered. I heard a car door open and knew it was Chloe from the scent that hit my nose. She had obviously seen all the rogues and knew she would have to fight with us.
‘No matter what happens, protect your Luna.’ I commanded my warriors through the mind-link.
‘Yes Alpha.’ They replied in unison before they flanked each side of her.
The rogues shifted into their wolves and we quickly followed suit. They didn’t waste anytime and immediately starting lunging at us.
A brown wolf came at me first and it took me a total of 30 seconds before I tore out his throat and his lifeless body fell to the ground.
Two more wolves attacked me simultaneously. One latched onto my back, while the other went for my throat.
I could hear snarling and lots of yelping, but I couldn’t see Chloe. Panic started to rushing through me and that distraction was all it took for the wolf in front of me to bite down on my shoulder.
I wasn’t sure we could win this fight, but I wasn’t going down without a fight. I shook the two wolves off me and attacked the grey one that had fallen on his back. I went for his throat and in one smooth motion ripped it out. I turned just as the other one lunged at me and managed to knock me to the ground. I rolled to my side as he was about to bite down on my abdomen. Luckily, I was fast enough and his teeth barely missed me.
All of a sudden, I saw headlights approaching us. s**t! Did they call for reinforcements? We were already outnumbered. I didn’t know if we stood a chance if they had anymore help.
Soon, four more wolves charged into the fight. It didn’t take me long to realize that they weren’t rogues. But how did they get here so fast? How did they even know we would be attacked?
Knox POV
Tonight wasn’t easy, I could feel Chloe’s emotions through the bond as she talked to her father, Xander and Victor. I wanted to comfort her, but knew she needed the time alone with them. As hard as it was, I fought the urge to interrupt her.
I didn’t have time to think about it as more rogues attacked me. I kept fighting, taking out rogue after rogue. With the added four wolves it didn’t take us long to dominate the fight. We were still outnumbered but we were stronger and better trained than the rogues.
I spotted Chloe fighting a large sand colour rogue and ran towards her to help. Before I could reach them, I watched her bite down on his abdomen. The rogue howled in agony before he was forced to shift into his human form because of the severity of the injury. Chloe released him once he was in his human form and glanced around her. The fight was now over and all of the rogues were dead, except for the one she had been fighting.
I shifted into my human form and everyone else followed suit.
“Is everyone ok?” I asked as I looked over Chloe for any injuries. Other than a couple of scratches she didn’t appear to be injured.
“A few injuries but nothing serious.” One of the warriors replied.
“You ok?” I asked Chloe.
“Ya, I’m fine. I kept that one alive so we can question him. Someone must have tipped them off about our whereabouts tonight.” She said angrily.
“We will question him as soon as we get back.” I replied. Goddess, Chloe continues to amaze me. The fact that she intentionally kept him alive so we could question him just goes to show how smart this woman was.
I grabbed a T-shirt from the back of the SUV and handed it to Chloe before putting on a pair of shorts. I turned my attention towards the four newcomers.
“Vincent, Beta Ron. How did you guys know we were going to be attacked?” I asked with a curious frown.
“We didn’t, but did you really think I was going to let my daughter drive through rogue territory with only you and four warriors to protect her? We were going to follow you guys until you crossed onto your territory and then head back.” Vincent replied before wrapping his arms around Chloe in a bone crunching hug.
“You sure you’re ok?” He asked her.
“I’m fine. Thank you, I’m not sure we would have won that fight if it wasn’t for you guys.” She said truthfully.
“I thought he was being a little over protective, but now I’m glad he was.” Ron chuckles lightly.
“They knew you guys were going to be here. Who else knew that you guys were going out for dinner?” Vincent asked with a frown.
“Just my closest men. We didn’t tell anyone else. We’ll have to question this guy and figure out who gave us up.” I replied, while motioning towards the unconscious rogue laying on the ground.
“You guys run back in wolf form. Make sure the interrogation room is ready for when we arrive.” I commanded my warriors and they nodded before shifting into their wolves and running off towards our territory.
“I’m coming back with you guys. If you have a rat in your pack, I want to make sure Chloe isn’t in danger.” Vincent said and I nodded.
“Absolutely, we could use your help.” I replied.
“Ron, you and the warriors can take the vehicle back. I’ll ride with them.” Vincent addressed his Beta.
“Got it. I’ll give Alpha Victor an update on what happened.” Beta Ron replied.
“Thanks.” Vincent said before Ron and the two other warriors got into their vehicle and left the same way they had arrived.
Vincent helped me restrain the unconscious rogue before lifting him into the backseat of the SUV that wasn’t involved in the collision. Vincent got in next to the rogue, while Chloe got into the passenger seat and I the driver side.
I drove around the car crash before flooring the gas peddle. I wanted to get back on our territory as fast as possible. I needed some answers and this rogue was going to give them to me. It was one thing to attack me, but to put my mate in danger was a whole different story. If Vincent hadn’t decided to follow us, who knows what the outcome would have been. I didn’t want to think about it. Someone was going to pay for what happened tonight, that I would make sure of.
“I didn’t say it yet, but thank you Vincent.” I said.
“Like I said, I was making sure my daughter was safe. I just found her and I’m not ready to lose her.” He replied with a shrug.
“I thought we had taken care of the rat within our pack when Kyle was killed. Clearly someone else is working with the enemy and I have a feeling I know who it is.” I replied as my jaw clenched in anger and my grip on the steering wheel tightened.
The rest of the car ride was quiet. When we reached the territory, I stopped the vehicle in front of the pack house and saw that Jo, Jag and their mates were waiting out front.
“Sounds like we missed a good fight.” Max stated as we got out of the vehicle.
“Someone tipped the rogues off. They even knew how many warriors we brought with us.” I replied.
“Ya, the warriors told us.” Jag replied.
“We brought one of the rogues back for questioning. Is the interrogation room ready?” I asked.
“It sure is.” Jag replied.
“Hot damn! Who’s the silver fox?” Max asked, causing Jo to growl. I looked behind me to see Vincent stepping out of the vehicle.
“That’s Chloe’s father. Him and his men helped us fight off the rogues.” I replied.
I didn’t have time to think about it as more rogues attacked me. I kept fighting, taking out rogue after rogue. With the added four wolves it didn’t take us long to dominate the fight. We were still outnumbered but we were stronger and better trained than the rogues.
“Seriously? Are dad’s off limits?” Max whispered to Chloe, but loud enough that we all could heard her. Tessa giggled in amusement.
“Max, I swear to the moon goddess, stop that right now before I lose my shit.” Jo growled.
“Sheesh… I was just joking, settle down big guy.” She replied with an eye roll.
“Jo, have a couple warriors stationed outside my father’s room. I have a feeling I might already know who our rat is.” I ordered.
“It’s already done. We figured it might be him given everything the warriors told us.” Jo replied.
“Good, bring him downstairs. I’ll be down in a few minutes.” I instructed and motioned to the rogue that Vincent was now carrying over his shoulder.
“You got it boss.” Jag replied before leading Vincent towards the dungeon.
“Chloe, why don’t you try and get some sleep. I’ll be up as soon as we get some answers.” I offered.
“Ok. Are you sure you don’t want my help?” She asked.
“Nah, this shouldn’t take long.” I replied and she nodded.
I leaned down and gently kissed her lips before she followed Max and Tessa into the pack house.
I let out a deep sigh before making my way towards the dungeon. This rogue was going to talk and I was going to make sure of it. No one puts my mate in danger.
I descended the stone stairs that led into the cold, dimly lit dungeon. I could hear voices down the the hall and made my way towards them. When I turned the corner down a long corridor, I noticed my men standing by the interrogation room.
“He’s ready, one of the warriors went to grab a bucket of cold water.” Jag reported and I nodded.
I looked into the room and saw the rogue sitting on a chair with his hands tied behind him. His feet were also bound together and his body was slumped forwards because of his unconscious state.
Once the warrior arrived with the bucket of water, we all made our way into the room. The warrior dumped the bucket on the rogues head and he immediately woke up. His eyes went wide and he gasped loudly for air.
“Good, you’re awake. We can do this one of two ways, the easy way or the hard way. If I was being honest, I’m hoping for the later. You tried to kill my mate and therefore I would really enjoy torturing you” I said as he glared at me.
“I’m not telling you shit.” He spat out.
“Good, I’m glad we’re on the same page.” I said calmly, before grabbing the ice pick from the choice of tools that were spread out on the table.
In one quick motion, I stabbed into his thigh. The rogue screamed out in agony as he threw his head back from the pain. I pulled the ice pick out of his leg and twirled it in front of his face.
“How about we start with an easy question. Who paid you?” I asked calmly.
“f**k you!” He spat out, but his body was trembling from the pain of his injuries.
“Wrong answer.” I replied before sinking the pick into his other leg. The rogue once again screamed out in agony. I pulled the ice pick out and put it down on the table before grabbing a butcher knife.
“Untie his hands.” I ordered and two warriors stepped forward to do as they were instructed.
“What are you doing?” The rogue asked, now his voice was laced with fear.
“Well, I’m tired it’s been a really long night and I would like to go to bed. Every time you fail to answer me, I’m going to cut off one of your fingers. You get 10 tries before we move on to something else.” I answered, as my warriors laid his hand flat on the table. The rogue struggled to get free, but it was no use my warriors had a strong hold on him.
“Jo, press play on the recorder.” I instructed.
“It’s already recording.” He replied.
“Now, which finger am I cutting off first? I kinda think we should start big, like with your thumb.” I taunted.
“Alpha Alec! He’s the one who paid us.” He blurted out.
“Awww… That was fast, eh? I really thought you’d put up a bit more of a struggle.” I said.
“Listen, it was nothing personal, we did it for the money.” He tried to reason.
“NOTHING PERSONAL? YOU TRIED TO KILL MY MATE, I’D SAY THAT’S f*****g PERSONAL.” I roared and watched him tremble in fear in front of me.
“Who tipped him off?” I asked, my calm demeanour was long gone and now replaced with anger.
“I don’t kno…” He cried out and before he could finish his sentence, I brought the knife down on his thumb, severing it in one motion.
“Awwwww…” He gritted out from the pain. Drool was leaking out of his mouth and falling on the floor in front of him.
“Please stop.” He begged.
“Answer my question.” I growled.
“O-Ok fine, I’ll t-tell you e-everything just p-please stop. A-Alpha Alec was b-bragging about your f-father’s b-betrayal. Y-Your father told A-Alpha Alec where you w-were going to b-be tonight.” The rogue stuttered, causing my anger to intensify. I knew my father couldn’t be trusted, but I never thought he would stoop this low. It’s time to wake that son of a b***h up. I thought to myself.
“Finish him. I need to go replace my father.” I gritted out before handing Jo the knife.
I was done playing nice. He crossed me for the very last time. My mate could have been hurt tonight, or worse. That thought alone made my b***d boil.
