Roma’s POV

As I sat in the conference room with the pack’s key leaders, I could feel the tension in the air as thick as a fog.

Before Carlos and I arrived, Raphael and the other wolves had scoured the forest and found traps and tracking devices that had been placed by humans.

Werewolf hunters.

The humans were getting bolder despite all our attempts to ensure that they didn’t ever cross the forest that separated the plains from the mountain that we called home.

None of us seated around this table could ever forget what had happened the last time the werewolf hunters had infiltrated the forest and almost found the pack.

I could never forget.

I had lost the most important people in my life that night.

And the only thing that had made me try to keep the demon in me on a leash had vanished that night.

The m******e had been bloody.

I had woken up covered in b***d. Human b***d. But it would never compensate for the mate and unborn child that I had lost that night.

My body jerked and I realized that I had allowed my emotions to bleed past the strong barrier that I had kept in place and the fastest way to allow the demon out was losing control.

Which was why I had an ironclad fist on my emotions, even though they were times that the sheer will did not stop the demon from surfacing.

“So, what are you saying? That we just sit back and wait for them to try this again?” Darian, the head of the pack sentry snapped and his voice brought me out of my chaotic thoughts to focus on the matter at hand.

The audacity of the werewolf hunters. The fact that they had decided to show up again after all these years.

I realized who he directed his question to when Raphael sighed and shook his head.

“Surely, you don’t agree with Carlos’s suggestion then? What he is suggesting is a mass murder. Genocide.”

Carlos rolled his eyes and slammed a fist on the table.

“You exaggerate. The population of the town is not large enough to call this g******e. Besides, what do you suggest? That we continue to allow the humans to try to test our borders and see what they can get away with?”

Emily, the only woman in the room folded her arms and frowned at Carlos.

“You do know that majority of the population of humans on Shadow plains do not know that we exist, don’t you? The werewolf hunters make up the minority of the population.”

“Minority does not matter, woman. That minority is going to destroy us if we don’t make the first move.”

Emily growled at him, her claws coming out and I cleared my throat, drawing all of their attention to me.

“While I agree that we cannot continue to let the humans do as they please, I will not be killing innocent women and children like you suggested, Carlos. We are better than that.”

“And where has being better gotten us? Where has it gotten you? Everyone here knows what happened the last time…”

My growl cut him off, shaking the entire room and I saw Emily flinch.

“Do not forget that I, more than anyone knows what it is like to have the b***d of both the guilty and innocent on my hands, Carlos. And I will not, in this room or anywhere else, tolerate any snide comment about how things are run here. Do you understand me?”

I didn’t need to scream. Not when the threat in my eyes had already done the talking. Carlos shifted uncomfortably in his seat and nodded grudgingly but it didn’t matter.

As long as he understood that everytime he pushed me, he took me one step closer to wondering if breaking his limbs would be a worthwhile punishment or not.

“They believe that we are monsters. And while we do not owe them a thing, we owe it to ourselves to prove them wrong. To prove that coexistence is possible. Do all of you understand me?”

When they nodded, I dismissed the meeting, asking Darian to strengthen the pack security and capture any who was found trying to repeat what we had already removed.

As I stared out the window, Raphael who had remained behind when everyone left walked up to stand beside me, staring at the window.

“Tell me, do you also think we should slaughter all of them?” I asked my friend and he shrugged.

Years ago, it had sounded like the best idea in the world. Now, it made me feel a huge burden in my chest.

“Wiping out the entire town would not only raise questions from other towns but it would be wrong. You would be in pain for murdering innocents and you’ve had enough of that. Hell, you’re paying for killing a guilty man already.”

And even though the goddess had dealt me a cruel hand for ridding the world of a monster, I didn’t regret it.

I would do it again. Perhaps, that made me a monster, but it was fine.

It takes a monster to kill a monster.

Aria’s POV

“So you’ve got a little crush, huh?”

I heard Sophia’s voice from behind me where I was sitting in one of the gardens around the house and I quickly closed my sketchpad and blushed.

It was a drawing of Roma. Perhaps the third one this week.

Since he saved me from my father and took me to the lake, it felt like he had totally forgotten I existed.

Maybe it was just me that was needlessly seeking attention when he could be busy.

I wasn’t a member of the pack or even a werewolf, but a servant so why did I feel like he was avoiding me?

It hadn’t stopped me from sneaking to watch him at every chance I got though.

This time, I had seen him standing in front of the mansion, talking to his scary looking half brother, Carlos.

The only thing they shared was that long ebony hair and similar facial structure but that was where it ended. Where Roma looked intimidating, Carlos looked like he had a beef to pick with everyone in the world.

Roma was definitely better looking too.

“No.” I replied Sophia as she sat on the grass beside me and she chuckled.

“Don’t worry, you’re not the only one. But don’t keep your hopes up though. The Alpha is many things but he’s not a lover you should want to take to your bed. Especially with that dreamy look in your eyes.”

I raised my eyebrows in curiosity, wanting to know more about Roma.

At this point, I could probably sit for hours if it meant I would get answers about him.

“What do you mean?”

Sophia looked around and then beckoned on me to come closer.

“His mate and pup were killed. By humans.”

My eyes widened in shock as she pulled back and shrugged.

“And well, you’re human. It’s even a surprise to the pack that you’re here. So, be careful. The others might not be as cool as I am if they discovered your crush on Roma, darling.”
