The Alpha’s Feisty Mate -
Chapter 24: Escape plan
Isabella POV
I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of light footsteps approaching my door. I sat up in bed and saw shadows at the bottom of the door. A piece of paper was slipped into my room and then the shadows moved away and disappeared out of sight.
I jumped out of bed, curious as to what the note was about.
I picked up the folded paper cautiously and headed back to my bed. I glanced at the time and saw it was 2:00 am. I thought that was odd. Who could have possibly left the note?
I unfolded the paper and read the handwritten letter.
“Isabella,
I will come to unlock your bedroom door tomorrow night at 1:00 am. If you truly plan on leaving the territory, that will be your opportunity. I have some friends that will assist with distracting the border patrol until you are able to cross.
Good luck.”
I read the note at least five times, wondering who possibly sent it, then it clicked, Jill. I forgot about my conversation with her. Man, she really wants me gone. I thought. Well, I’m not going to question it. This is my opportunity. I need to take it If I truly want revenge. Now, to plan my escape.
I couldn’t sleep the rest of the night. I lay in bed tossing and turning, thinking about what was coming. My heart was racing with excitement at getting revenge for my father.
The next day was the same routine as most days. Alpha Drake came and got me before heading to training. We ate in the dining hall, and then we sat in his office while he worked, and I secretly thought about my escape.
“You’re quiet today Isabella.” Alpha Drake said without looking up from his desk.
“Just pondering about how exciting my life is these days.” I retorted, trying to sound calm so I didn’t cause any suspicion.
“Hmmm. It wouldn’t have to be this way if you just stop being stubborn.” He said.
“Thanks, tips. I’m good though.” I said sarcastically. He just glanced at me with his usually disapproving look but didn’t say anything further.
After he was done work, he led me back to my room.
“I’ll have dinner brought up for you. I have a meeting this evening, so I won’t be able to take you out.” He said with a disappointed look.
“Ok,” was all I said.
He shut the door and locked it. I felt relieved. I had a lot to do before this evening. I need to get a bag ready and pack.
‘I don’t trust that Jill character,’ my wolf grumbled to me.
‘I know, I don’t either, but once we get out of here, we can do what we need to do. Then if we come back here, I will be able to promise Alpha Drake that I won’t leave, and maybe he’ll give us our freedom.’ I told her.
‘Maybe we can come back and have some more fun with him.’ she replied, wiggling her wolfish eyebrows.
‘I wouldn’t count on that, but at least maybe the tension won’t be so high between us.’ I said, rolling my eyes at her.
A few hours after the Alpha left, a warrior knocked at the door and dropped off some food for me. After I was finished eating, I lay in bed, trying to rest a bit, knowing it would be a long night.
I looked at the clock, and it was 11:00 pm. Time to pack.
I grabbed my backpack and packed some clothes, my dagger, and silver laced handcuffs because you just never know when you might need them. I didn’t pack very much, knowing it would slow me down when I shifted. I wanted to keep it light.
I hid the bag under my bed as well as a pair of black leggings and a black long sleeve shirt that I planned on wearing when not in wolf form.
I laid back in bed in case Alpha Drake decided to check in on me. I didn’t want him to get suspicious.
I sure hope Jill comes through and actually unlocks the door for me. I thought.
1:00 am rolled around, and like clockwork, I heard footsteps lightly approaching my door. The shadows appeared under the door, and I heard the lock click. The shadows retreated and disappeared from under the door.
I waited ten minutes before standing up from the bed. I quickly changed into the clothes I set aside and slipped my backpack on.
It’s showtime, I thought as I opened my bedroom door and looked down both sides of the hall to make sure the coast was clear, and it was.
I tiptoed toward the stairs that led down to the main level, being as quiet as I possibly could. I was hoping that at this time of night, everyone would be sleeping.
I managed to get to the main floor without encountering anyone. Once on the main floor, I stuck close to the wall and moved towards the front door, keeping my senses on high alert.
I heard footsteps coming out of the kitchen, and I quickly ducked into a closet. The footsteps went past me, and once I heard them climbing the stairs, I let out a breath. I waited two more minutes before peeking out of the closet and having a look around. There was no one insight, so I stepped out and ran to the front doors and exited the packhouse.
Ok, step one is complete, now to make it out of the territory without being seen or heard by patrol. This might be a little tougher, I thought.
I ran from tree to tree, staying in the shadows until I reached the thick forest where I removed my bag and my clothes. I tucked my clothes into my backpack and shifted into my wolf. I hadn’t heard from or seen any patrol members yet.
I picked up the backpack in my mouth and ran towards the territory border.
I heard a twig snap ahead of me, so I stopped in my tracks and lowered myself to the ground. I then heard shuffling in the trees and started to panic, thinking they were going to replace me, but to my surprise, the shuffling sounds started to move away from my location.
I waited a few more minutes to make sure the coast was clear before I took off in a full sprint towards the border. I wasn’t far from it now. I can do this.
As I approached the border, I slowed down to listen and make sure there were no patrol members in the area. Once I didn’t hear anything, I proceeded and crossed the border.
I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding and continued running so that I would be far from the border when Alpha Drake realized I was gone.
I just need to replace Derek before Alpha Drake replaces me, I thought to myself.
Alright, so how do I replace Derek? I know he betrayed us and by working with the rogues, so if I can replace a rogue, I’ll subdue him, cuff him up and interrogate him and hopefully get a location where I can replace Derek. That’s a decent plan, I thought.
I had been running for several hours and decided to stop for a break by a river. My wolf had a drink of water from the river, and we laid down to rest for a few minutes.
I was starting to feel comfortable that I was far enough away from the territory that when Alpha Drake realized I was missing, it would take him a while to replace me. Best case scenario, maybe he’s sick of my disobedience, and he’ll just cut his losses and let me go. I don’t understand his need to protect me. It’s strange, I thought.
I was interrupted by a twig snapping in the tree line to the North of my location.
I lowered to the ground and had my senses on high alert. I inhaled but didn’t pick up any unusual smells. Maybe it was a squirrel, I thought, but then I heard another snap, and this time it was coming from the West.
Ok, I’m not so sure about the squirrel theory anymore. I started backing up slowly while keeping my eyes on both the North and the West tree lines.
All of a sudden, a wolf came out of the East tree line snarling at me. I let out a warning growl.
Then two more wolves came out, one from the North and the other from the West. They were clearly caging me in. They look like rogues, but the weird thing was I couldn’t smell them at all. They must be using something to mask their scent.
The three wolves approached slowly, boxing me in.
One of the wolves, a brown one, lunged at me, I didn’t wait, and I lunged right back at him, meeting him head-on. I latched my teeth into his shoulder and threw him off of me.
While my back was turned, a sandy wolf jumped on my back and bit down on the back of my neck. I let out a yelp, then slammed my back hard on a nearby large rock causing the wolf to fall off my back onto the ground.
The third wolf ran at me, knocking me to the ground. He stood over me, trying to get ahold of my neck with his jaws, I was quicker, and I latched my canines into his abdomen, causing a yelp to leave his muzzle. I pushed him to the ground and bit into his throat, killing him instantly.
Once I turned, I spotted the sandy wolf and the brown wolf moving in on me. I was waiting to see what they were going to do. It didn’t take long before the brown wolf lunged at me. I moved out of the way, and instead of turning to the brown wolf, I went for the sandy wolf that wasn’t expecting it. I knocked him over with my body before slashing my claws across his abdomen, spilling b***d everywhere.
I then spun around and went for the brown wolf who was about to jump on my back. I got him pinned to the ground and ripped his throat out in one quick bite, dropping his lifeless body to the ground.
I scanned the area to make sure all the threats were neutralized before I turned and assessed the sandy wolf. He had shifted to his human form and laid naked and still at the base of a tree. When the injuries are serious, it forces your body to naturally shift to your human form. The s***h marks I made to his abdomen must have been deep enough but not fatal.
I watched the naked man lying motionless on the ground. He looked to be around 25 years old with dirty blond hair. He was tall, maybe 6’2, with a muscular build, and had scars all over his body.
I decided to shift to my human form and retrieve my handcuffs from my backpack. I secured the rogue to a tree with his hands cuffed around the trunk. He was almost unconscious from his injuries.
I got dressed in my black clothing and, this time-strapped on both my daggers to my legs so I’m ready for any more attacks.
I wonder why their scent was masked? Usually, a wolf masks their scent when they are executing an attack, and they want to surprise their victim.
‘Somethings not right,’ Bri said to me.
‘Ya, I’m with you. This attack doesn’t sit well.’ I reply to her.
“Well, let’s wake this a*****e up and get some answers,” I told her.
