I sit in the bar unable to shake off the memories of Cassie that flood my mind. Her smile, her laughter, the way she used to look at me with those trusting eyes. How could I have been so blind to not see the truth before?

The woman of my dreams was just right before my eyes, and she showered me with all the love she could offer and yet I treated her like garbage.

I reach for the glass of whiskey in front of me. As the amber liquid burns its way down my throat, Ives and let the memories wash over me.

Cassie, with her beautiful eyes glistening under the moonlight as she stood before me that first night I met her. I would never forget the raw vulnerability and unconditional trust that I saw on her face when she lost her innocence to me. Then I remember her sad expression when I almost could not mutter the words ‘I do’ on the day of our wedding. The tears threatening to spill over as she held onto the hope that I would replace it in myself to love her. But all I could offer was a cold faradiof indifference, masking the confusion I feel within me. I remember the shattered look on her face whold her I wanted a divorce. Adam shakes his head. “Why’d you let her go if you loved her that much?”

“Because I’m a f*cking idiot!”

“But what are you planning to do with the baby?”

“I have to take responsibility

ility for it. I will never turn my back on that child. But do I really have to mangan just because she is carrying my child?”

“Do you want people to call your child a b*ta*d?”

“There has got to be another way!”

“And why don’t you want to marry Megan?”

“Because…” I trail off. There is only one reason why. “Because she’s not Cassie.” I turn to Adam. “I was Cassie, things would have been different. I would rush her to the altar the moment she says yes. I would probably thank my lucky stars that I knocked her up. Because that would make the possibility of her saying no a lot slimmer

“I believe in fairy tales and ever afters.” she wrote.

“Oh, da*n it!”

“What?” Adam asks. I show him Cassie’s post. “So? It doesn’t mean she got married.”

“What else can it be? Her son is holding wedding rings!” Islam my fist on the table. “I’m telling y douchebag Sullivan.”

“Still… Adam says. “Don’t jump into conclusions based on a picture alone.”

Fine! I scroll through my phone and dial her number. It rings for a couple of times, but no answer.

After about fifty times, when there is no answer, I decide to send her a message.

Adam is right. I should get my answers from her straight.

“If she calls me, and she’s not married, I’ll take that as a sign,” I said. “We still have a chance. I can still fight for us.”

“And the baby?”

“I will never turn my back on that kid. But d*mn! My family can disinherit me or the Board can kick me out, I don’t care! I’m not going to let her go this time!”

But by midnight, I still didn’t get a call from her.

D*mn it! Did I lose her for good?

“12:01,” Adam snickers.

“F*ck off? She will call me.”

But half past midnight, and there’s still nothing.

“Look, mate, I love you. But I think… maybe this is your sign,” Adam says apologetically.

“F*ck those signs!” I say.

I take my phone and dial Cassie’s number once again.

“Hello,” a male answers the phone.

F*ck it! It’s Sullivan.

“Why are you answering Cassie’s phone?” I growl

“Why are you calling her in the middle of the night?” Sullivan counters.

“Just f*ck off and put her on the phone.”

“I can’t,” Sullivan says. “She’s out cold.”

“What do you mean?”

“It means she’s sleeping, you moron. She’s tired. Worn out. You know how Vegas weddings can g alone? I also need to sleep, you know.”

I immediately hang up.

“F*ck that a*shole!” I curse under my breath.

“What happened? Did you speak to her?”

“No,” I snap. “But her new husband answered her phone!”

“What?”

In motion for the bartender to give me another bottle of whiskey.

Da*n it! I’m going to drink my brains out. It’s the only way to numb this pain.

“I lost her, man!” I say to Adam. I don’t realize it, but tears start to roll down my cheeks. “Da*n it! I lost her for good!”
