The Billionaire's Mistake (Anya and Daniel)
Chapter 276: Wendy’s sharp tongue

He felt he had reached the very lowest point of his life.

"I can tell you. Using your wife as bait so she refuses to see you, now there is opportunity for other men to take her," she said, and he froze so quickly, he might as well have turned to stone.

"How about that, my little immortal vampire, Did I stab it right? This is a special stake I made for you. Is it long enough to nail you in your coffin for a few thousand years?" she asked and made to turn away, but he felt like dying. "Another man? How is that possible? There I a man who would dare court my wife? I have the house covered at all times. They would be killed on sight." he said to her.

"Another man or not, you still won't have a chance you threw away," she mocked and he went silent.

His mother, who was about to leave, paused and saw her son's eyes go dull.

"She won't ever seem me again, would she? She hates me," he muttered.

For some reason, she could not watch. She had raised this child herself.

She knew how stable he was at all times. She picked up a pillow and hit him several times.

"Stop laying around then. Since when were you gentlemanly and would let her go because she wants to. Where is your shamelessness now when you need it. You are her husband. Go there and use that privilege," she said and turned away. Seeing him break before her eyes hurt her. She opened the door and left the room.

Vivian had been listless all day.

She stepped out to take a walk and was followed by men in suits. She could only swallow her words and continue as though they were not there.

When she got home that day, she tiredly took off her shoes and changed. But soon, she got a knock on the door.

She swung the door open to reveal Mathew standing on the other side, and her expression became guarded and wary. Why was he here?

"What are you doing here, Mathew?" she asked, her voice laced with caution. She had only just calmed down and cleaned up and he was here again.

After she asked, she regretted it. She walked around him and made to leave when she heard him speak.

Mathew took a deep breath, steeling himself for what was to come. "I'm living here," he said, his voice steady despite the tension raging through his veins.

Vivian paused and looked back at him as her eyes narrowed, suspicion filled in their depths. She thought she had heard wrong. "Living where?"

He had promised to stay away. Why was he doing this? What does he mean by saying this?

Mathew met her gaze head-on, he had made up his mind. "Here. We are married after all," he said.

He was really scared that if she did not see him everyday, she would forget him. He let Lily stay over so that he could come and see her when he wanted, but she would most times send Lily back to him, giving him no excuse to come around. But if he moved in, there was no way for her to avoid him.

Vivian looked as though she heard that the moon had fallen on the sky and flattened the planet. A little laughter found its way from her throat.

"Have you been drinking? Why would we live together? Have you forgotten what you said? Why would I want to live with you again?"

Mathew winced at the accusation in her voice. His felt his mother was right. No matter what he had to stay. If he let things go on, he would really loose her.

"I know. You wouldn't, but we are married, Vivian. I intend to live with you," he ha made up his mind. This was his wife. He would not live away from her.

Vivian's expression hardened slightly at his words, her walls remained firmly in place.

"You said that this is my Home Mathew, my safe place. You cannot be here, or are you going back on your word?" He was hurt that she did not want him in her safe place, but he bad made up his mind. Nothing she said would change it.

Mathew took a step forward, reaching out to gently grasp her hand in his. "I'm not asking, Vivian. I am telling you that we will be living together, like every other couple," he said and walked into the house with his luggage.

Vivian's sanity shook greatly. But before she could respond, her phone rang, interrupting the moment with its shrill tone.

With a sigh, Vivian looked away from Mathew, who was now inside her living room.

It was a call from a unknown number on her new phone.

"You really did not come to the reunion," she heard a familiar voice say.

"Mercy," Vivian said with a frown. This was

organizmeone from the

organization that sponsored her in the orphanage. She was not stupid. Growing up, she knew they were shady, but tried to stay out of it. For her to call her... Vivian was on edge.

"Why didn't you go?" Mercy asked. The reunion. Vivian recalled receiving an invite to her school reunion but ignored it because she thought it was a trap. Sure enough, she was right.

"What do you want?" Vivian asked.

"Meet with me," Mercy said.

"You must think I am a fool," Vivian scoffed.

"Your name is on a hit list. The organization put it there," Mercy said, "Don't you want to get off the list?"

"And you expect me to believe that you, who tried to get me killed all those years ago would get me off the list?" Vivian said.

To this, Mercy sighed on the other end, "We at least used to be friends," She said.

"Friends? Marcy I have been thinking a lot these days. The organization never let their assets roam free. There was always a handler of some sorts to keep them in line. I wonder

why I thought I would not have one. I You weren't handler right? They kept you beside me to watch me, train

me and use me. You were never on my side, were you?" Vivian asked,

her voice somewhat broken.

"Sure. I was. I took care of you, made sure you stayed out of trouble. Even kept your secret when you started dating your ex. If not for me, you would have died by now," Mercy said. "Don't lie. If you knew who Donald was, then the organization probably knew too," Vivian said with a small dark laugh. She felt like a fool for trusting her words this long.

"So you no longer trust me," Mercy said.

"Should I? You tried to set me up so that I get killed," Vivian shouted.

At this point, Mathew was listening to her, not leaving. He could already guess who was on the other line. This made him frown.

"Would you believe me if I said I did it for your own. Good?" Mercy said.

"Killing me is for my own good? Setting me up is for my own good? How does that work? Go ahead, I am listening. What grand excuse do you have?" Vivian said. "They trust me now, Vivian, now I can help you escape them. I can get you off the kill list," Mercy said.

"You? Get me off the kill list? Why should I believe a word you say?" Vivian asked.

"You will believe in my plan when you see the document I am sending to you," Mercy said.

"Do not send anything, I will not read. I want nothing to do with you and your plan," Vivian said tiredly, "if that is all, I will end the call now,"

"You really have lost trust in me huh..." Mercy said. Vivian knew that tone. When Mercy wanted to guilt trip her she would talk in that tone. "Should I?" Rosalie scoffed.

Mercy kept quiet on the other end for a while.

"If you don't speak, I will end the call," Vivian said.

"Don't you want to know why the organization raised you?" Mercy asked and Vivian went silent.
