Providence, Rhode Island…Nineteen Thirty Seven
It was storming in the city. The lightning that flashed across the sky would light up the pouring down rain that made it impossible to see otherwise. No one in their right mind was outside. Which was just the way Nichallo preferred it. He didn’t want anyone to see what he was doing. He knew that if anyone saw him using magic, they would think he was just as crazy as the man he was hunting.
Nichallo walked down the middle of the road, not caring about the rain. It wasn’t the first rainstorm he had to deal with and it wouldn’t be the last. According to the prophecy the Guardian had told his fellow sorcerers and him, there would be a storm over a city when the prophecy began.
Nichallo’s eyes glowed and he saw the house of the man he was hunting. He was glad that the rain was making it impossible for anyone to see anything. If anyone was looking at the house, they would see the same thing Nichallo was seeing. There was a green light coming from one of the rooms. Nichallo could sense dark ancient magic being used.
Nichallo looked both ways down the street before he walked up to the house. He didn’t bother knocking at the front door. He just kicked the door in. Just as he expected, there was no one in the house except for the man he was hunting. Not even the man’s ex-wife or his other living relatives. He saw the same green light coming from underneath a door.
Nichallo could hear chanting coming from the room where the green light was coming from. He rushed over to the door and kicked it open. His eyes widened.
There was a man in a black suit and purple robes standing over a circle that had a pentagon in it that was burned to the ground. The candles around the pentagon were burning with green fire. The man had a black journal in his left hand. His right hand had what looked like a pendant. He was chanting as he looked at the pentagon in the circle.
Nichallo could hear what sounded like roars and screams coming from within the circle. He knew what the man was doing and it was his job to stop him. He took a knife out of his jacket. “Stop what you’re doing.” He ordered the man.
The man looked at him. “I can’t stop.” He told Nichallo. “The ones who call me must be released.” He went back to looking at the circle and started chanting again.
Nichallo looked at the books that were all scattered on the ground. His eyes widened when he saw one of the books. “The Call of Cthulhu.” Nichallo said to himself. He looked at the man. “This is your last chance.” He told the man. “Stop now or I will be forced to stop you.”
The man looked at Nichallo. “You can’t stop what’s coming.” He told Nichallo. “They’ve been locked away for so long now. They deserve their chance to recreate the world in their image.” The man smiled. “The end of times is now here. When this is all over and they’re ruling the world, I will be standing with them.”
Nichallo sighed. The man’s sanity was gone. “I’m sorry.” He said. Without warning, he threw his knife at the man. The knife impaled itself in the man’s chest right where his heart was.
The man gasped and fell to the ground. The fires went out and it became dark in the room. The sounds of screams could be heard before it became quiet.
Nichallo snapped his fingers and the lights in the room turned on. He went up to the man and checked for a pulse. There was a faint pulse.
The man looked at Nichallo. “You’ve…only…delayed the…end. The…Great…” The man didn’t complete what he was saying as he died.
Nichallo stood up. He knew the man was gone. He looked at the burned markings on the ground. Nichallo was relieved that he had shown up when he had. Now that the normal lights were back on, he could see what looked like scratches all around the edge of the circle. Had he been any later, he knew that what the man was trying to summon would have broken free of their prison.
Nichallo looked at the dead man. His eyes glowed and a wave of energy came out of him. Nichallo went to the window and looked outside. He could see his energy wave spreading out. He just ensured that when the world found the dead man, they would replace that he had died of cancer.
Nichallo went over to the books he had seen on the ground. He picked up The Call of Cthulhu. He knew that he couldn’t erase what the man had done to the world. His Cthulhu Mythos would forever give them a doorway to the world through the minds of humans.
Nichallo pocketed the book and left the house, leaving the door open as he walked into the dark stormy night. Overhead, the lightning seemed to have a green streak to it as flashed across the sky.
