The Lycan Series -
The Lycan King’s Breeder Chapter 18
Greg's POV (New POV)
"It is done," I said plainly to Lydia who was slouched over her desk in the most uncomfortable position, sorting some paperwork in her office. She looked like a crazy person, books and scripts strewn about every which way on the floors, glass vials laying around in a mess. I wrinkled my nose at the weird smell that was emitting from the weirdly shaped container she held in one hand.
"What the hell is that?" I hissed, pointing at the small bottle.
"What?" She asked distractedly, not even turning to look at me as she scribbled down notes.
Deciding that I was no longer interested in whatever potion she was mixing, I repeated my earlier statement, "I said, it is done."
She looked up at me for a moment, her brows raised and eyes squinted in confusion. But then, the realization set in.
"Oh you mean he had sex with Avalyn?" She asked in a soft voice, concern dripping from her tone. She had always had a soft spot for that girl, ever since her arrival.
"Oh the poor girl," she said with a tired sigh.
"Yes. So we need to set an appointment in a week to make sure she's carrying," I said.
Lydia gave me an unbelievable look as she chuckled, shaking her head. "It doesn't work like that, Beta." She stated, adjusting her glasses.
I stared at her in confusion. "What the hell do you mean?"
I didn't understand what she was talking about, it shouldn't take that long for the girl to come out pregnant, should it?
"Beta Greg, just because they slept together last night doesn't mean we are sure that she's carrying a child next week. I will mark down to test her in a month, and at that point, we can see if she actually is pregnant or not. However, there may be a chance she isn't, so we don't have to raise our hopes so high." Lydia stated casually.
Her words had me concerned, Avalyn had to be pregnant.
"But this is what Alpha and Luna need, the girl has to be pregnant," I said worriedly, this had to work.
Lydia, however, set her pen down and sighed before leaning back into her chair. She seemed so casual and relaxed, making me wonder if I was the only one that actually gave a shit about Talon right now. There was a lot about this woman that made me reconsider my sanity.
"Gregory...." she began, and I knew we were talking more on a friendlier level now than professionally.
She especially, knew how much I hated being called by my full name. I glared at her, but she chose to ignore me.
"Them sleeping together one night does not mean she is pregnant. It could take a few tries for her to get pregnant, as you have seen with Willow's case. Alpha Talon is just going to have to deal with that, unfortunately. There is absolutely nothing I can do about it." F**k!
If eventually, Avalyn didn't catch, it was going to be up to Lydia and me to break the news to Talon and Willow. I definitely wasn't going to be doing that alone. Yes, Talon was my best friend, but that didn't mean I wanted to be on his receiving end when he had one of his angry episodes.
"Very well then, set the appointments and we will check within the month."
Lydia nodded her head at me with a small smile before writing something down on a piece of parchment and holding it out to me. "This is the date she needs to be brought to me," She said, not even waiting for me to respond as she walked back over to her desk and continued whatever it was she was doing before I came.
I didn't blame her though, I knew she was busy with new tasks set about from Talon. Our warriors were going through intense training and testing right now to make sure they were ready and in shape. A war was brewing and that was everyone's main focus right now. Talon was hounding everyone, not just me. He was dealing with a lot here at the capital. He had people that would be coming in from allied countries and packs soon, and he needed the people he trusted the most to be present when it happened.
It was also very important for Talon to have an heir soon, not just for the members of his pack, but also for his image, and the continuity of his legacy. A Lycan king without an heir to pass down his throne to was unheard of. Talon really did have a lot on his plate. Making my way from Lydia's workplace, I was curious to know how Avalyn was doing. I had actually planned to check up on her this morning, but Dawn had informed my mate and me at breakfast that she would go see the girl.
And of course, Cassie, my mate, had chastised me about how the idea of another man coming to check up on Avalyn after the events of last night wouldn't be proper. I wasn't one to really understand why, but if my mate and sister said no, then so be it. Avalyn's voice filtered through the air as I walked down the stairs, I moved towards the kitchen and her voice seemed to grow louder, signaling me that I was getting closer to where she currently was. I turned the corner and made it just in time to see her and my sister close the screen door. "Where are they going?" I mumbled to myself as I curiously and silently followed them.
Looking through the screen, I saw the smiling faces of my sister and Avalyn. They seemed to be caught up in a fun conversation as they headed towards the palace gardens, chatting excitedly as Avalyn stared at the flowers in awe.
She didn't look like she was in pain or discomfort, even if she was hiding it, either way, It was refreshing to see that she looked well. The last thing I wanted was for Avalyn to slip back into her depressive state, for all the progress we'd made over the past week to be all for nothing. "Beta Greg!" I heard a voice call behind me.
I turned around to see Raiden, the retired Beta. He had served Talon's father, King Henry, when he had been king, and retired when the man had lost his life and Talon had taken over the throne, appointing me the next Beta of Southern Ridge.
"Yes, sir Raiden?" I asked with respect. Even if he was retired, he was still one of the strongest wolves we had. A bulking old man, with black tattoos covering most of his upper arm.
"I just wanted to inform you that word had come down to us that Emily is headed back from overseas. She'll be arriving next month after a stay in our sister pack." Raiden relayed the news to me.
Confusion laced my feature at what I'd just heard, why wasn't this being told to Talon himself?
Emily was Talon's younger sister. She had been sent away to a boarding school last winter to ensure she stayed out of trouble, and now she was coming back home. Did Talon even know about this? Did he even know his sister was going to be spending a month in his cousin's pack?
"Uhm... how do you know this?" I asked Raiden, just to be sure he knew what he was talking about.
"Well, she contacted my daughter and asked for me to inform you," Raiden replied.
His daughter and Emily were the same age, they'd been friends with Dawn since they were kids, and all three of them grew up together.
"I guess she's still upset with the Alpha for sending her away. Kids these days do know how to hold a grudge." Raiden laughed, patting me on the back.
"Thanks. I'll let the Alpha know," I said to the man, showing my gratitude. He nodded, and with that, he walked away.
Dawn was going to be so ecstatic when she heard the news. I sighed.
Great... now to go face my fearless leader and let him know that his rebellious eighteen-year-old sister, who not only despised his mate but also wasn't afraid to show it, was coming back home. Just great.
