The Lycan Series
The Lycan King’s Breeder Chapter 53

Talon's POV

"Look, nothing is wrong with you. You're perfectly normal. If I have to tell everybody for you to believe me, then so be it," I said looking straight into her eyes. I meant every word I spat out and I wanted her to see it too. A small chuckle escaped her lips and I smiled at the action. I knew we were going to have to put her through more stress to get information about this morning from her, so I had to make sure she was in the right headspace. "We're going to try this again when you're ready," I said and she gave me a small nod. "But first, I want to ask you a few questions, is that all right?" She gave me a confused look before she finally nodded her head in response.

I offered her a small smile as I stood up from the bed. "Just give me a second," I said when I saw the look of worry on her face. I walked up to the screen door and slid it open, the conversation they were having immediately died down as I stepped into the room and gestured to Lydia. She understood immediately what I wanted and quickly grabbed her notepad to follow me out of the room.

We walked back to Avalyn and Lydia immediately went to hug her. Greg, Dawn, and my sister stepped out of the room too and came to stand next to me.

"Hey, Avalyn," I called softly. "Would it be okay if Lydia asked you a few questions?"

"What's going on?" She whispered unsurely, looking at everyone expectantly, but nobody said anything.

"It's nothing, sweetheart. I just have to ask you a few questions, okay?" Lydia finally replied when she saw that no one else wanted to break the news to Avalyn.

"All right." Came Avalyn's reply as she sat comfortably on the bed. I watched as Dawn and Emily walked over to her side, each of them placing a hand on her shoulder as a means of comfort.

Lydia looked at me, silently asking for permission and I gave her a quick nod for her to continue. Then she turned to Avalyn and cleared her throat. "Honey, did you, at any time during breakfast feel weird?" Avalyn gave her a confused look. "I don't understand." She whispered.

"It's all right, no pressure. I just want to know what happened at breakfast this morning," Lydia said with a smile.

She was really good at this. She had been the pack mage for a while now, and I couldn't help but feel proud of her, she knew how to do her job perfectly well.

"Uhm... Emily, Dawn, and I had breakfast together. W-we just had... uhm..." Avalyn struggled to explain, and I could tell the shock of losing the pregnancy hadn't left her.

Lydia gave her a sweet smile. "It's okay honey. Can you remember what you had for breakfast?"

Avalyn nodded. "Yeah... I had toast, egg, and bacon... why? What's going on?" She asked, but Lydia ignored her question.

"What else did you have, honey? I have to know."

Avalyn must have sensed the urgency in Lydia's voice, because just then, she squinted her eyes tightly, trying to remember. "Oh yeah... I think a maid brought me some cake. She said it was the last piece." I perked up at that. "A maid?" I asked, staring at her.

"Oh shit, yeah. Dawn said she was one of Willow's maids," Emily interjected before Avalyn could speak. I looked at Dawn and she gave a small nod in agreement with what Emily just said.

"Go with Greg," I ordered, gesturing to my sister. "Help him identify this maid and bring her to me."

"Yes, Alpha," Emily said before she and Greg turned around to leave the room.

Somebody was going to pay with their life.

"Talon, what's going on?" Avalyn's soft voice asked gingerly. She looked at me with so much confusion in her eyes, it pained me to break the news of the cause of her miscarriage to her. Lydia immediately cleared her throat. "Dawn, please come give me a hand back there. I need some assistance."

Dawn smiled at Avalyn before she stood up and walked away with Lydia, giving us some privacy. I sighed and took my seat next to her on the bed.

"I know something's not right.... but nobody wants to tell me anything," she said quietly, staring at me.

I took her hands in mine as I prepared to break the news to her. "We have reasons to believe that somebody wanted you to lose the pregnancy," I said as slowly and as calmly as I could.

I watched Avalyn's face to check for signs of distress, but I couldn't see anything. She was impassive, and so I continued.

"Lydia found traces of some drug in your system. She said it's used to force a miscarriage to happen," I said through gritted teeth. No matter how much I tried to be calm for Avalyn's sake, the fact that somebody had tried to harm her made my blood boil. I could see the tears in Avalyn's eyes threatening to fall as she took in the news. "Wh-what... I don't understand..."

"Somebody poisoned you," I stated. "And I believe their main purpose was to get rid of the pregnancy."

Avalyn's eyes widened in shock as she stared at me. "And you think it's her?" She asked, tears already spilling from her eyes. "You think it's... the maid?"

"I don't know yet," I said pulling her into a warm embrace as she sobbed. "But I promise you that I will replace whosoever is responsible for this, and I will kill them," I growled.

Guilt and anger washed over me as she sobbed into my chest. I felt like I had failed her. I had failed to protect her and keep her safe. It should have been my number one priority, yet, I had failed.

"B-but I... I don't understand... why w-would anybody do something like this?" Avalyn sobbed.

"I have a lot of enemies, Avalyn. A lot of people don't want to see me on the throne. It's a really dangerous world I live in." I sighed. She wouldn't understand, she was a human. "I'm just sorry I couldn't protect you from this."

She pulled away to look me in the eye. "Don't say that... none of this was your fault, Talon... you didn't know this was going to happen." She whispered with tears spilling from her eyes.

I used my thumb to wipe away the tears that I could and pulled her forward until she was straddling my waist. "I still feel like I failed you though," I confessed. "No matter how much I tried to protect you, I couldn't do enough. I should have done more, Avalyn. I should have never let you out of my sight."

She stared at me with shock written all over her face. Even though I didn't know what had come over me, all I knew at that moment was I had to gain her forgiveness and trust back. I had to assure her that I would never let something like this happen to her again. "Forgive me, Avalyn," I whispered, my fingers dropping to run circles on her waist. "Just promise me that you d-"

Without warning, she leaned down and pressed her lips against mine. Though it took me by surprise at first, I eventually relaxed into the kiss and reciprocated eagerly. Every time we had engaged in any form of intimate act, it had always been me initiating it, so it was really a shock when this time she kissed me first.

"What was that for?" I asked using her own words.

"I had to get your attention somehow." She smiled, throwing back my earlier comment at me. "If you want my forgiveness, Talon, you have it... even though you did absolutely nothing wrong," she said softly.

Before I could respond, however, the screen door suddenly screeched open, revealing Emily. She had a worried look on her face as she walked in.

She headed straight in my direction and her frown deepened like whatever it was that pissed her off was connected to me.

"Talon. You have to come with me, there's something you have to see," she said urgently, making me throw her a questioning look, which she ignored.

"Can't you just say whatever it is right now and right here?" I growled but she shook her head and stood her ground.

"I'm afraid you have to see it for yourself." She insisted.

With a sigh, I gently placed Avalyn back on the bed and gave her a small smile. "I promise I'll be back," I said, dragging my fingers down her soft hair. She nodded in response and I stood up, gesturing to Emily to lead the way. For her own sake, I hoped whatever it was she was dragging me to was worth the stress and trouble.
