The Possessive Alpha -
Chapter 9
ELLE POV
I enter the dining room to replace the Alpha and Luna in their spots at the smaller table we use when it is just the four of us having dinner together. The Alpha and Luna are at opposite ends of the table, meaning I will have to stare at Damon’s smug face the entire dinner. I hear Damon come into the room a few seconds behind me; we both take our seats at the dinner table, and I try my hardest not to look at his face, which has a satisfied smirk plastered to it. f*****g fantastic.
“Hello, Kids,” greets Luna Olivia with a warm smile on her face.
“How was your first day of classes, kids?” asks Alpha Charles as he cuts up the medium-rare steak sitting on his plate.
“Fine,” Damon mumbles while looking at me as he scoops some mashed potatoes into his mouth.
“How did training go with the students today, Damon?” Alpha Charles asks, looking at Damon, who hasn’t taken his eyes off me since we sit down. I try not to pay attention, instead focusing on the plate of food sitting in front of me.
“It went alright. I have some students who need to work on technique, but they’re not terrible,” Damon says, bored, as he looks at his father instead of me.
“That’s good! How did the new kid Theo do?” Alpha Charles asks Damon, oblivious to how his body stills for a moment at the mention of Theo’s name.
“He did surprisingly well,” is all Damon says in response to the question, but I can hear the irritation in his tone.
“Well, he should,” Alpha Charles says in between bites of food, ignoring Damon’s attitude, “his father is of Beta b***d, and he is the son of a council member. I would be disappointed if he was not trained to fight.” The Luna and I stay silent during their conversation, but I can see her eyes flick between Damon and me from the corner. While the Alpha is unaware of Damon’s endless stares and my refusal to look at him, the Luna is not. Nothing gets past Olivia, and it would be stupid to try. The woman is damn perceptive.
Turning to me, the Alpha continues with his discussion of Theo when both Damon and I wish he would drop it. The more he talks about Theo, the more intense Damon’s stares become on my face.
“What did you think of Theo, Elle,” the Alpha asks me while carving away at the huge portion of steak left on his plate.
“He was nice and a little funny,” I say, looking at the Alpha, but it doesn’t escape my notice the way Damon grips his utensils tighter as I describe Theo’s likable qualities.
“He is also pretty handsome from what I hear,” Luna Olivia says, a hint of mischief in her eyes. Luna Olivia isn’t stupid, and I can tell she is trying to get a rise out of Damon, whose eyes darken as he waits on my response.
“Oh, I don’t know,” I stumble, trying not to piss Damon off and not make things worse for myself or Theo.
“Oh, you know,” Luna chuckles, “I overheard some of the young she-wolves giggling over his Godlike looks at the coffee shop this afternoon.”
“Those she-wolves probably heard he was of Beta bloodline and a council member’s son, and they were looking to rank up.” Damon scoffs while rolling his eyes. For some reason, Theo’s arrival has gotten under his skin. The more we talk about Theo, the more pissed-off Damon gets and the more uncomfortable I become.
“So, Elle, do you agree with all the young she-wolves of New Moon?” Alpha Charles asks, joining in the teasing.
“I guess,” I shrugged nonchalantly, “he isn’t my type. He is nice, but I see him becoming more of a friend than anything.” I see Damon’s shoulders relax, and a small smile tugs on his lips at my response.
“Well, what is your type then, sweetheart?” Luna asks me sweetly as she puts some butter onto a roll.
“My mate,” I said matter-of-factly, because I don’t want to replace any other male attractive. I sneak a glance and see a massive frown on Damon’s face.
“Well, I would not discount Theo, honey,” Luna Olivia says, “He is intelligent and funny. The best relationships begin as friendships, darling.” Her response was a little shocking. Was I hallucinating, or is the Luna suggesting I take Theo as a chosen mate?
“Why do you keep pushing Theo onto Elle?” Damon growls out, his anger seeping through as he tries to keep Slade from pushing through.
“We are not pushing anyone onto Elle,” the Alpha says, unbothered that Damon is growling at him.
“It sure sounds like it, the way you keep talking about his positive attributes and how handsome he is!” Damon is practically yelling as I stay quiet, desperately wanting to finish my food so I can leave this conversation.
“Honey, we want Elle to replace the best possible mate,” Luna Olivia says calmly, putting a hand on his arm, attempting to calm him down, but the action pisses Damon more.
“The best wolf for Elle is her f*****g mate!” Damon shouts as he jumps up from his chair, knocking it over. Alpha Charles has remained calm during this whole conversation, but his treating the Luna like that would set off any Alpha. They are highly protective over their mates, and Alpha Charles is no different.
“You need to calm down, Damon,” the Alpha says, flashing black eyes, letting us all know that Poseidon had joined the party. The aura rolling off the Alpha and Damon was enough to make any Omegas in the dining room tremble uncontrollably. While it didn’t bother me much, I could tell it was starting to affect Luna Olivia, who has Gamma b***d. If the aura is affecting her, it should be affecting me, but it hasn’t. I wonder why it should; I am only an Omega.
“You need to stop pushing every man you meet onto, Elle,” Damon yells, getting more into his father’s face.
“Son,” Alpha Charles says, his eyes returning to their normal cerulean orbs that look like Damon’s, “we just want the best for Elle.” He says softly, hoping Damon will follow suit and calm down.
“The best for Elle is her mate!” Damon shouts, his anger rising, and so is his aura, causing the poor Omegas in the room to kneel on the floor, cowering and their necks showing in submission. Luna Olivia doesn’t say much, just watching her son with interest, but I can see the wheels turning in her mind. She is planning something; I just hope it doesn’t involve me, but going by this conversation and the looks she keeps shooting between Damon, I would have to guess it does.
“Son-” The Luna tries to explain, but Damon cuts her off, shouting some more.
“Enough! Elle deserves her mate; if she cannot have him, she deserves better than that mutt!” Damon screams before stomping out of
the dining room to the front door. Halfway down the stairs, he turned into his majestic beast, Slade, and ran off toward the forest.
The three of us sat awkwardly silent for a few moments before the Alpha sat back down at the table, looking at Luna Olivia. Based on the glazed-over look in their eyes, I know they are mindlinking each other. While they have their private conversation, I start shoveling food in my mouth, wanting to exit this situation as quickly as possible.
“We apologize, Elle,” Luna Olivia says with a sad look, “Damon should not have lost his temper over that nonsense, and I am sorry you had to witness it.”
“It’s okay, Luna,” and before I can stop the word vomit, “It’s nothing I am not used to.” I snapped shut once I realized the words that came out of my mouth.
“What do you mean, dear?” Luna Olivia asks, a concerned look on her face.
“Nothing, Luna,” I say, shoveling the last bit of food into my mouth, hoping I can leave this awkward dinner soon.
“If you say so, hun,” Luna Olivia says, not sounding convinced at anything I have said tonight.
“May I be excused now?” I ask, trying not to sound too desperate to leave this table.
“Before you go, Elle, we need to discuss something,” Alpha Charles says, turning towards me.
“Okay,” I say nervously, unsure where this will go.
“The Beta, Gamma, and I have been discussing your training. We have decided it is time for you to join the other students’ training regiment. You have been fighting with us for so long that you have learned our styles and techniques. We need to see how you fight against unknown opponents. You will not know every foe as you do us.” Alpha Charles says, looking at me with a deep sense of pride. While Alpha Charles and Luna Olivia have not officially adopted me, they have always treated me as one of their own.
While I am excited at the opportunity to fight with others in my class and show them my skills, I can’t help but think of how Damon will react to my training with the others. Doing so goes against his rules for my life at New Moon pack.
“Does Damon know?” is the first thing I ask; considering the Alpha is telling me without Damon around, I would hazard to say he doesn’t.
“As much as Damon thinks he is Alpha of this pack, he isn’t yet; I am, so his opinion doesn’t matter.” Alpha Charles says, a little annoyed at my question.
Luna Olivia interjects, noticing her mate’s annoyance, “Damon doesn’t know, and there is no point telling him yet. Based on his behavior tonight, it might be better to keep it hidden from him until the day you start.”
I don’t know why the Alpha and Luna thought it wise to keep this from Damon, but I have no place to question their decisions.
“Okay,” I say, agreeing with their decision not to tell Damon, “When do I start training with the others?”
“In two weeks,” Alpha Charles says as he and the Luna get up from the table, signaling that I can finally leave the table and the dinner from hell.
Walking back to my room, I cannot believe that I will finally get to train with the other kids in my class in two weeks. To say I am excited and nervous about this change is an understatement.
