The Princess’s Broken Alpha -
Chapter 77
Jackson was practically living with Indigo and Kyor now that they were trying to relinquish the evils of darkness which was Castor. It was insufferable for him but he needed to watch them both, so he had no choice but to stay in this sub par apartment. Kyor had collected every witch book he could gain access to and was asking around to see if there was some way Indigo's chaining spell could be reversed if used.
Kyor had even tried his uncle and the witch's high members during a witch's meeting but it was an unspoken rule that it couldn't be broken. No witch, no matter how great they declared themselves, hadn't figured out how to break it or maybe none cared enough. It was just accepted as a done deal. They weren't crazy enough to create a chaining spell to ensue the wrath of the wolves so why would they care to replace a solution. It was a rare and forbidden thing and now here they were working against time. They had gathered everything, cluttering up the small living room and Jackson watched them as they both scanned through the books relentlessly. Pages and books were scattered on every surface and the small apartment now smelled of old books.
"You could help us you know. It would make everything go faster." Indigo softly suggested, peering from over the top of the dirt brown book she had in her hand at him. It was titled 'Breaking Spells'.
"You made the mess, you make all the efforts to clean it up. " Jackson glowered at her.
Indigo gave a telling look to Kyor who shrugged back, exchanging giving eye signals. They've been doing that for the past few days too. They were getting on his nerves. He wanted them to be extremely uncomfortable, to know the days were ticking away and if they didn't replace a solution he was going to slit their throats open.
"If whoever made the one for me didn't work who is to say that the one you made for Kiarra will work?" Jackson sat up and placed his feet up on the small table that had a few books strewn around on it.
"It will because I made it," Indigo stated matter of factly, and Kyor nodded in agreement, his face showing clear evidence of his large pride in his cousin.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Jackson took his feet off of the table to sit up straight, staring down the yellow-eyed woman across from him.
"It means she is one of if not the best witches around. She's powerful," Kyor interjected.
"For a half breed?"
"Whoa whoa whoa!" Kyor shouted,
Indigo flinched at his words, it felt like they were cutting her like a knife. She angrily threw the book in her hand in his direction. It missed him wide and bounced off the chair.
"Don't you ever call me a half breed!" she shouted at him and Jackson could see the steam coming out of her ears.
"It is what you are. Basically a mongrel." the cold disdain in his tone made his words sting at her. " A half breed."
Jackson's tone indicated that he was clearly better than them. Indigo sucked in a breath, his words were getting more than a rise out of her. They had hit home and hurt deeply. She needed to make sure to replace a way out of this as soon as possible so she could get rid of him.
"I hope you both realize the mating ceremony is in three days. That means you have until tomorrow before I slit both your throats. I've been contemplating it for the past few days and I'm starting with the half breed first."
"You might as well kill us or hand us over from now. There's nothing powerful enough to break the chaining spell and stop referring to her as a half breed!" Kyor said in despair, pushing his green hair back tiredly. His skin looked pasty and the words were now swirling before his eyes.
Indigo stood up catching both their attention and focused on Kyor.
"Why can't we just capture Castor?"
"Because we don't know if he's working with anyone. They might use it and we are back at square one half breed."Jackson replied monotonously.
"Also if we capture Castor and he doesn't have it he could end up using it as a bargaining tool for us to set him free." Kyor put in.
Indigo nodded fast before sitting to return to her book. There was a silence before Jackson's voice broke through her thoughts.
"You didn't answer my question."
Indigo glared at the red head. His hair was impeccably groomed, shaved at the sides with the top longer. The bright red strands luring you in to the dangerously handsome Lycan.
"No, as a hybrid " she emphasized the word hybrid. "I'm not weaker than those who aren't hybrids. I can't quite say it for everyone or rather, anyone else."
She thought he would end there but she found he had a follow up round of questions and it made sense for what he did. Jackson was way more than he appeared which you wouldn't notice if you hadn't gotten past the attitude, coldness, and fear of him. "So what does your wolf look like?"
"Oh my god Jackson! We are working here." Kyor threw down the book in his hand in frustration. He had been at it for days and his eyes were puffy from staring at pages for so long not to mention his neck was painfully stiff. He was bloody tired. Then to top it off, they had Jackson breathing down their necks.
"She's a regular brown wolf," Kyor clipped.
" Well, that's boring."
"Sorry to disappoint you but she doesn't have hybrid written on her fur."
Kyor gave out a cackle at his own joke and Jackson glowered at him from the green sofa that looked kid size for him because of his enormous size.
"I'm sorry but even you have to admit that was pretty funny."
"You both have until midnight!" he growled out and they both stilled.
They both dived back into the books feeding on coffee. When late afternoon arrived Indigo gave up. All her hopes fled. She didn't think the answers she was looking for were in the book.
She could feel her heart racing as the time ticked by and she looked at Jackson and she could feel sweat break out on her forehead. He wouldn't hesitate to kill them. Jackson was bored livid. This was what caused him to start his little games. What better way to spend time with his prisoners than mental games? He broke the silence talking out loudly for them both to hear. "Maybe this all runs in the family."
Indigo pretended not to hear him because his conversations always left her in a sour mood.
"The apple surely doesn't fall far from the tree." he added and their eyes caught.
She saw Kyor sit up straight and Indigo was now curious to know what he was getting at.Why did Kyor look so uncomfortable?
"What are you talking about?" she directed at Jackson, trying to gage her cousin's uneasiness.
Jackson tilted his head to stare at Kyor and shook his head in mock disbelief.
"You didn't tell her Kyor? That's a shame and I thought I sucked as a cousin but maybe that's why we get along so great."
"He's just being an asshole." Kyor put in, rolling his eyes dramatically and hoping for the life of him he kept his trap shut but Jackson thrived on this kind of tension.
"I have to keep quiet because he doesn't want you to know why the apple doesn't fall from the tree. Kyor wants the secret to stay between the two of us." he said to Indigo and she could feel her stomach tightening.
"He doesn't know anything Indigo, he's baiting you."
"Am I Kyor? Because you look nervous. You see Kyor here is a liar, it makes you wonder what else he's keeping from you. If you're family why can't he tell you about your family?"
This jarred something in Indigo and she fully turned to Kyor now who was throwing daggers at Jackson. Indigo had enough and she knew as much as Jackson was an asshole he was an honest one.
"What is he talking about Kyor?!"
"Nothing."
"It's not nothing! What is he talking about?"
"Bloody hell will you stop listening to him! There's nothing!" he said but she could tell he was lying.
"You're lying to me. Jackson what isn't he telling me?" she directed to Jackson.
"I don't know if I should be the one to tell you. I think it would be best if he told you." Jackson started to throw the little cushion in the air and catching it.
"Don't give me that crap, you want to tell me so just say what it is Kyor is hiding already."
"Okay fine " Jackson relented.
"You are banned from my restaurant forever!"
"You shouldn't have lied to me, Kyor."
"I'll tell you in due time Indigo."Kyor turned to Indigo but she nodded adamantly.
"It's best if you tell her now because midnight is approaching fast and well she might not out live it."
"Kyor?" Indigo asked one last time.
"Fine, if you insist," Jackson exhaled loudly though she wasn't asking him." He didn't want to tell you that your daddy dearest is the one creating all those witch spells that have been going around to chain werewolves. He's the one that created the failed one I got." "What?" Indigo's voice was faint as she looked at Kyor begging him to say it wasn't so.
"You see I brought the spells to Kyor here and he did his thing but he said he didn't know who it was just like he said he didn't know where you were. That it was concealed who made it. Turns out he did know. See where I'm going with this? What is the coincidence that you and your father are creating the same spells?"
"He wouldn't"
"
'Well, he did and maybe that's why you can't do any better. Is it a coincidence half breed? Or are you two plotting something?"
"I haven't spoken to him in years. We aren't plotting anything and I'm not like my father." Indigo tried to convince him.
"Says every distant child from their parent. It's tired and played out."
Indigo got up and they were rewarded with a loud door slam. Kyor was changing shades due to how mad he was and he ran to Indigo's room.
"I hope she's brainstorming in there because time is running out," Jackson called. "I had at least hoped the half breed would do some witch spell on you."
Kyor knew he was terrible at lying but he didn't think Jackson would have figured him out. The cocky bastard.
"Indy" he called against the door but he heard nothing. Kyor stared at the red hair that was still throwing the pillow
"He's an asshole and we still have to correct this. You did what you had to do but we can fix this."
"
I am going to ruin someone's life, practically killing someone and it's all my fault. I shouldn't have made it." Indigo sat against the door on the floor feeling hopeless." He's right, I'm no better than he is."
"No, you are better, much better and just because you did something terrible doesn't mean it can't be corrected. This is your chance to make it right."
Indigo opened the door to envelope Kyor in a tight hug, squeezing him tight and Jackson scoffed.
"Don't let me have to tell you guys to get back to work." Jackson growled and they jumped hurrying to get back to it.
By late evening they were still at square one.
"All I've got is that a couple of these wolves that got chained died."
Jackson shifted and they both didn't like how this was going.
Indigo skimmed through the book and placed it one side.
"There's just nothing powerful enough to break this spell. No power, no-"
Indigo jumped up out of the seat like a lightning bolt. Indigo couldn't fathom it. It had been right under their noses all along. It was right before them and none of them, had seen it. It was age old and the most powerful thing werewolves had or would encounter. "I've got it" she barely whispered shell shocked that Kyor had to strain to hear and Jackson was tense to hear what it was. She was in a trance as her eyes widened bright. "It's been right under our noses all along. How could we have been so stupid?! I can fix this!"
"What is it?"
Indigo laughed like a crazy person.
"It's the mate bond."
They both looked at her quizzically.
"The only thing strong and old enough to break it is the mate bond. It's existed before anything else and conquered everything in its path. If a wolf is chained all they would need is to be bitten by their chosen mate"
"And their wolf will be released from the chains so they can mate with their fated." Kyor finished for her.
"Yes!"
Jackson was almost seeing red. Indigo could feel the waves coming off of him and they both fell silent as they noted the anger changing in his hard features. Jackson must've heard wrong. This couldn't possibly be the only way his cousin could be freed. "That won't work. You'll have to replace another way." his voice was deadly.
Indigo slapped her forehead. She knew the princess was out to replace her chosen mate but she didn't know if she was successful after giving Castor the location. All she knew was that he had returned with her, gloating of his triumph. She had not calculated if they had accepted each other. The dread began to fill her if she had rejected him. Lycans weren't as lucky as regular werewolves. Plus she was a princess and she knew there must be an approval process but this was her life they were talking about. There was no other way. "I-if she.."
"I said that won't work. You will replace another way." his words were final and she shuddered reluctantly under his power.
All of Indigo's hopes were dashed aside.
"She did replace her mate. Did they reject each other?" Kyor put in and Indigo was trying to put the pieces together.
Indigo knew she had went to the Cartier pack and there were three brothers there. It could also be a regular wolf from the pack which would be the reason why Jackson was so furious. She plopped down feeling weary, she was so weary and she felt frustrated that they had a way but Jackson refused it. She folded her hands and had a stare off with Jackson.
"There is no other way Jackson. Why can't we use her mate?"
"Because she hasn't accepted him and he isn't suitable. He's barely even a wolf," he said in a disgusted tone and Indigo and Kyor shared a confused look.
"What do you mean he isn't suitable? Why did she not accept him?"
"I don't know. Maybe she didn't like what she saw. It's highly likely. He would be a disgrace to her and our family.
Indigo and Kyor were even more curious now. They were dying to know who the princess could have fated to when she ran away to come back and now be on the way to be mated to Castor. Jackson just now made it even more appealing.
Kyor knew it couldn't be a regular wolf in the pack. If so he wouldn't say he was barely a wolf. Plus Jackson's hatred was too intense for that. The Cartier pack was well known and very popular. It was top tier and the largest ran by three brothers, the main one and older being...
Kyor stared open mouthed at Indigo like a fish out of water and he saw Jackson's jaw muscle flex in his peripheral vision. Kyor was a known dramatic. He fell on the floor rolling twice while Indigo screamed that he should tell her. "Will you tell me already!"
"It's Alpha Zion!"
"Oh my god!"
Indigo screamed and they both gawked in excitement. They couldn't believe it. She was mated to Alpha Zion. He was widely known as the wolf in wheelchair and if so it would definitely cause an uproar and riot. This was more than they had expected. Indigo frowned for a moment.
"Alpha Zion has a good reputation from what I've heard. He's one of the best Alphas ever if not the best to ever come forward. He is practically a legend already."
Great he was now in the presence of a fan. Jackson was simmering.
"You can't possibly be calling him half wolf because he's in a wheelchair?" Indigo felt her anger surge.
"Yes I can "
"You are disgusting. Did she say why she doesn't want him or is it a princess requirement? I can already imagine the judgement he'd get from all your people especially if they're like you." "Watch your words now."
"Or you'll kill me, torture me? Then who is going to save your little princess?"
"It won't work anyway, because she denied him at the mating ball."
Indigo had no words for that. If she didn't want him there was no way she could possibly force them to mate to save her life. It wouldn't make any sense.
Indigo pushed her hair back and she felt the tiredness even more.
"I'm going to sleep"
Kyor shot a look at Jackson.
"You're not finished."
"You can kill me in my sleep when midnight comes Jackson." she said sadly.
There was a knock at the door and they all froze. Jackson indicated for them to hurry into the kitchen. They prepared their stance in case it was someone unfavourable.
Jackson was all claws and Indigo's heart beat was roaring in her ears. This was it. They'd probably come to drag her away.
Jackson opened the door and eased back in surprise.
"You've got to be fucking kidding me."
