The Rebel
Chapter 27

“So you mean you two know each other?” »

Alex asked, surprised. Vera nodded as she sharpened the blade of her knife.

“Wow!” It’s awesome. I was really afraid that you would kill him before he even had a chance to tell you the truth. »

“I don’t hate men, Alex, and you know it. »

Alex shrugged as he ate the food Vera brought him from the pack.

“You hate most of them.” Well, except me who’s your favorite. Vera

just raised an eyebrow at him and that was enough for him to lower his head, nervously swallowing his chuckle.

“Shut up, Alex!” »

Alex didn’t dare flinch after such an order. He remained silent while Vera stared at the moon overhead. Then she put the dagger back into its sheath.

“They will all go to the northern track tomorrow. He will launch the attack during the night. I want you at the northern border at 8 p.m. sharp. »

Alex nodded nervously.

“But, they said he’s very powerful, you know! We don’t even know what we are fighting against. »

“You know me very well, Alex. You know I’m not leaving here until this matter is resolved. »

“I know that. But what about your identity? Won’t they know that you’re the rebel? »

At this moment, Vera smiled at Alex while taking out a mask from her pocket.

“So this is my last resort. »

Seeing that she was determined, Alex simply nodded and prepared for tomorrow’s fight.

… … ….. Vera’s POV “Stay here Vera and lock the doors. Don’t open the door no matter what. All right ? » I nodded several times to let him know that I had understood his recommendations. That’s when Kane gave me a small smile. “Don’t worry, Kane I’ll be fine.” » He came closer to me and the next moment he was taking me in his arms for a hug. This took me by surprise and I stiffened for a second. He placed his hand on my head before leaning towards my ear. “I finally found you after so many years, Vera. I can’t lose you again,” he whispered in my ear. ” Bye ! » With that, he turned and left. I let out a long sigh as I turned around to grab my gear.

I then adjusted the earpiece in my ear before turning to Alex who was waiting near the border.

“Is there any movement?” ” I asked him.

” No None. However, I feel the aura of this place changing. Hurry up, Red. »

I then hurried. I quickly put on my combat boots while adjusting my dagger stuffed inside. I then turned towards the window, and jumped into the void, putting on my mask which covered half of my face.

I was sure that with this mask, no one would be able to recognize me.

When I arrived near the border where Alex was, he was already in his wolf form. I then climbed onto his back, clinging to his dark fur. I gave him a light kick in the ribs and we began our mad dash.

In the direction of the northern path.

We arrived at the small villages and saw fires lit outside small houses. The night seemed peaceful here, but we knew that would change in the next few minutes.

After getting off Alex’s back, I headed towards one of the houses.

It was closed, like all the others. People were afraid because they knew it was the new moon today.

Suddenly I heard footsteps getting closer. Kane’s men were there!

At my nod, Alex and I entered a house that seemed deserted. We locked the door so we could only see outside through the window.

The wolves from the pack were on patrol, walking along the mud path.

Locked in this house, we waited patiently.

4 o’clock…

It was around midnight when we suddenly heard the rustling of leaves outside.

The wind began to blow with force, breaking the eerie silence of the night.

Suddenly, I heard a low growl from Alex behind me. I then turned to him to see what was going on.

He nodded and that’s when a powerful howl was heard. It was so loud that the windows of the surrounding houses as well as ours shook.

He was there !

But what surprised me the most was the fearlessness of this creature. He hadn’t opted for hunter tactics… No attacks from behind either.

It was as if he was proud to announce his arrival.

At that moment, I realized that the muddy road ahead had suddenly become silent. Where had the guards gone?

Taking out my dagger, I walked slowly outside.

I walked quietly, taking care not to make the slightest noise.

I heard movement in one of the houses and I slowly walked towards it while remaining on my guard.

However, I smelled a scent that instantly froze me.

It was an indescribable stench. A smell of wet fur during the hot summer winds mixed with that nauseating odor that an animal gives off when it has not bathed for several days.

That’s how I knew that this creature had already traveled the path I was standing on right now.

But when ? How ? How could I have missed it?

Or was it because of the winds?

” Be careful, Vera. It’s here somewhere,” Alex told me.

I nodded and was about to continue walking forward when suddenly we heard the piercing cry of a little girl. I then rushed in the direction of the screams…

Shit!

Don’t tell me he’s already kidnapped a little girl…

But… That scream… It came from the opposite side…

Where did the smell come from in that case?

How is it possible ?

I stopped dead. At this moment I saw the guards and warriors of the pack rushing in the direction of the scream.

” No ! Something is wrong.

What’s wrong? “, I asked myself.

I turned around, my gaze fixed on the house I had doubts about.

“Vera!” What are you doing ? You’re going in the wrong direction! The little girl needs help! We must hurry ! »

Refusing to respond to Alex’s urgings, I closed my eyes. I could feel it… It was still there!

“Go see the girl, Alex,” I ordered.

His black wolf stopped to look at me intently. He certainly wanted me to repeat my order since it was very rare that we separated on a mission.

But it was important and he knew it.

” Go ahead ! »

I yelled at him this time for hurrying up. He turned and quickly walked away to join the others. For my part, I tightened my grip on my dagger and slowly approached the house.

This stench… It was getting stronger and stronger.

When I got closer to the door, I was stunned to see that the lights were on inside.

Someone or something must have been in there… It definitely was…

Taking a deep breath, I kicked the door open. She fell with a crash.

The loud noise was followed by graveyard silence as I slowly entered.

There was no movement inside… Only the screams of the villagers outside could be heard.

I had to cover my nose because the smell coming from the room was unbearable.

There seemed to be no one in this house. However, the door was locked from the inside.

It didn’t make sense. Suddenly my eyes stopped on something on the ground.

This was apparently the source of this smell.

It was a black liquid… It was as black as tar and it looked like something had been dragged through it, because there was a trail that went behind the couch.

As I walked towards the couch, I was hit by another smell, this time more familiar, which made me quicken my pace.

“No… No… It’s not possible…” I pleaded in my heart that my apprehensions were not justified.

Alas, that was what I feared, b***d… The strong smell of this thing black as tar covered it, trying to camouflage it.

And what I saw next made my b***d run cold.

They were thin legs covered in b***d. When I looked up, I felt my stomach turning and I thought I was going to throw up.

I had to close my eyes the second I saw it…

The spectacle was unimaginably cruel and brutal.

It was just mind-blowing… I would never have dreamed of something so atrocious in my worst nightmares.

Although the face is unrecognizable, I could still tell that it was a very young girl.

My b***d boiled with vengeance and hatred.

And that’s when I noticed a large shadow on the ground, right behind me.

The shadow kept growing. I tightened my grip on my dagger.

Very quickly, he was close. The creature was right behind me.

He let out a low growl that shook the windows of the house, but I remained still.

The terrifying spectacle before my eyes sent adrenaline rushing through my veins.

I turned around suddenly and was ready to attack when I caught his eye. My legs wobbled and I lost my balance.

It was impossible… He… He couldn’t be alive… He… He’s dead though! That’s when the flashback started.
