Twisting Her Fate
Chapter 50

Connor suddenly nods, looking like he understands everything, like he had an epiphany of sorts, meeting Maggie's eyes. If Maggie was looking hard enough she would see the deep coldness still lingering in those inherently cold-colored eyes.

"I understand now, the way you asked me which pack I was from and then immediately kissed another man in front of my face was because you thought I was too good for you. The way you repeatedly refused to even speak to me and the elite squad was bought in was because you thought you were so much less than me. The way you kept sleeping with Gabriel, once, sometimes even twice or three times a day, was just in an effort to disguise your extreme feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness in the face of me" Maggie's eyes light up as she nods.

"Exactly"

Connor looks at the woman who has obviously never heard sarcasm before. The urge to smash his forehead into the desk nearly overwhelms him. He has never conversed with anyone so clueless before and his brain is hurting at the prospect. As he studies Maggie, he really doesn't know what the moon goddess was thinking with the pairing. Nothing about her suits him, even without Leilani in the picture, he can't imagine ever being happy with someone like her.

"And then when you came in here screaming abuse at me and my girl and breaking up our happiness and our good time, threatening me and her, it was all because you were jealous?"

"Right"

Maggie frowns slightly as she looks at Connor. His words and his tone are all wrong, the look of indifference in his steel gray eyes shouldn't be there.

"So what has changed? What at this very moment makes you come to me and tell me these things?"

"I finally built up the courage to say what I really feel"

Connor nods his head knowingly, as if that is a reasonable enough excuse. As if he doesn't see through her thinly veiled facade.

"So it just happens that you gain the courage to come to me and confess your feelings the day after the pack standings were released for no other reason at all? Not that you found out that my pack is not as pitiful as you first thought. Not for the fact you found out that the half moon is ranked under my pack. Not because of the fact that I have moved up fifteen places. It is just a pure coincidence that yesterday the pack standings were released and today you are on my doorstep telling me how wrong you were and how much you want to give it a try?"

Maggie is taken back that Connor sees straight through her scheme, thinking that he would be so distracted by her body that he wouldn't even have a moment to contemplate anything until it was too late, until he had gone wild, until he mated and marked her, doing what his body would naturally want to do which is take his mate and claim her.

She stands before him in only the lingerie, the coat is in a puddle around her feet. Her glorious body is on full display, yet he has not even looked at all. His eyes just boring into hers. All she can do is keep up the act. After all, she cannot voice the truth even if she feels like he already knows it.

"Yes, I've been working hard to build up the courage. It has nothing to do with that. It is just a coincidence"

"Have you stopped to consider that maybe your value was only to me when I had the lower status? Now that I've been raised in status, there is no use in having you by my side"

"You want to use your mate just to gain a better status?"

"Oh, I had no intention of doing such a thing. I raised my own status and the status of my pack by hard work and good choices. You are the one that opened up my eyes to that possibility. That deemed the mate bond wasn't as important as my standing within the pack or my pack strength"

"But we are fated. I am meant to be Luna of the stormy pack. I was born to be"

"Is that meant to matter to me? You were the one who turned your back on me and the stormy pack the moment that you deemed us not important enough to bother with. Even if we were not strong, even if we were not cruising from strength to strength, as luna, it is also your job to come in, support the pack, help it reach new heights. In no way is a luna meant to come in, sit back and enjoy the spoils of everyone elses hard work. I want a partner not a parasite"

"I was born to....."

"No, let me stop you right there, I was born to be the alpha of the stormy pack and even if you are fated, it doesn't mean that you are the best option for Luna. A fate is sealed from birth and I am not sure what happened between then and now, but all I know is that you will be a detriment to the pack instead of an asset"

Maggie is shocked at Connor's statement. None of this is going the way she wanted at all. She has been raised her whole life believing that she is special, that she deserves everything.

"Of course I was going to..."

Maggie can't even think of any words to refute, she has had no interest in putting in hard work, she has coasted by in life, believing that being a luna is nothing more than looking after her man and sitting back and enjoying the spoils of her status. "Stop before you start making promises we both know that you could never keep. There are two types of people in the world: the workers and the takers. You are in the latter category. We both know that, there is no point in lying about it" "But..."

"The fact of the matter is that it shouldn't have mattered if I was the weakest warrior in the weakest pack. A mate bond is meant to look past everything else"

Connor's face scrunches as he frowns, he looks Maggie up and down, there is nothing about her that appeals to him, he continues, rectifying his statement.

"That is what I believed growing up, that the mate bond comes above all else, that it was meant to be love at first sight, that we were meant to run into each others arms and never want to let go. That is not the reality at all, because it is my fated mate that I disdain to be in a room with and I have found a girl that it hurts to be apart from"

"Connor..."

Maggie is trying to keep composed but she is losing her grip on her sanity. Her best assets somehow end up disgusting in his eyes. He isn't leaving a single opening, there is no maybe, he is closing tightly any chance of a reconciliation, not even giving her a chance at all.

All hopes of being the stormy pack Luna are disappearing before her eyes, her dream over before it began, the idea of riding Connor's coattails through to a bigger and better life vanishing.

"Please cover yourself up and have some self-respect"

Maggie cannot stand the humiliation for a moment longer, she has never been treated this way and the humiliation just keeps going, the harsh words just keep coming, not giving her a chance to collect her thoughts at all.

"I don't think I deserve this at all. I came here earnestly to express my feelings to you"

"If you had said the same thing two days ago I might have been inclined to believe you, but congratulations, you just confirmed my original assessment that you are a power-hungry, ladder-climbing, gold-digger"

"But..."

"You know I almost feel sorry for Gabriel, does he know that you are here? Maybe he doesn't, as he is so blind that he has no idea what is worth valuing and what is not"

Connor is not just talking about the fact that Gabriel has chosen Maggie to be his Luna, but more the fact that he dismissed someone as special as Leilani without ever giving her a chance to flourish, to never give her a chance to showcase her abilities, deemed her too weak and not worthy of being by his side when he had a hand in oppressing her so much that she didn't dare raise her head. Instead of being the support to straighten her spine, he chose to crush her under the weight of his hate and allowed the hate of everyone else to weigh her down so much that he is surprised she is what she is now.

"Fine, I am leaving"

Maggie cannot take one more insult and has to leave. She turns to escape the space that has been the scene of her greatest humiliation.

"And Maggie?"

Maggie looks back with the last glimmer of hope shining in her eyes.

"There is no need to bother coming to the stormy pack again unless it is in an official capacity"

Maggie opens and closes her mouth but she has nothing at all. She feels like she has been sent through the shredder. All she can do is gather up the pieces and walk out bruised and battered.

She clutches the jacket around herself. As soon as the door of the study closes she composes herself, bitterness filling her every cell. Connor is wrong. She deserves everything. He is the blind one. He should have been happy that she degraded herself to seduce such a boring man.

Gabriel isn't going as well as Connor, but at least he is interested in more things than just working. She would probably die of boredom being with Connor. He is probably really stingy with money too, believing that it should be spread throughout the pack instead of being aimed more at the upper layer.

Maggie storms toward the front door muttering curses to herself. Her eyes catch an omega that is dusting up high from up on top of a ladder.

"What are you looking at, you peasant? Do you think you have the right to lay eyes on me?"

Maggie hits the ladder hard, causing it to fall and the omega to come down with it. A pain-filled scream enters the air and Maggie just sneers as she walks out to her car, like the mess behind her has nothing to do with her.

Connor rushes out of his office as he hears the noise, cradling the omega in his arms. Terrance comes running out of his room to help.

"I am so sorry Addison, I didn't know she would do anything like this"

"I.....Its okay Alpha"

Terrance and Connor work on resetting the arm to give it a chance to heal. For the omega with the weaker wolf, it will take a couple of hours to heal. Connor looks at Terrance.

"Have you got anything for the pain?"

Terrance nods and runs back to his room. He always carries a supply of his most regularly used potions, even when he just goes to the supermarket, so when he was packing to leave with Levi he made sure to pack a little bit of everything. Connor stares at the door that Maggie disappeared through. He doesn't feel a shred of regret for the harsh things he said to such a woman. She deserved every word and more. How could anyone be so heartless?

There is no way that Maggie deserves to be Luna and he is glad that she will never become the Luna of the Stormy pack, her personality is toxic and her attitude is detrimental.

"You will be fine Addison. Just bear with it for a moment"
