A Cowboy In Love
Chapter 25

- Of course I understand. She got up from her chair, feeling she was losing something very valuable.

- Don't be offended Megan, I didn't mean it that way. You're a very beautiful woman but...

- Yes I know, I'm not from your territory. I'm just a city girl who wouldn't be able to adjust to this ranch and this life.

- I only said that because I saw what my parents' marriage was like, they were both from here and their marriage was exemplary.

I think a city woman would have a hard time adjusting to a life like this, having to leave the comforts she had.

- Of course! I'm a stiff and that's all. Let it go, Jack.

- Listen to me, we can...

- You know what, Jack? I'll go up to my room and rest for a while, this conversation is over and whatever happened between us let's pretend it didn't happen. --But it did Megan!

- Then we'll live with them Jack! She closed the door behind her, wiped her tears and went up to her room.

Melissa and Grisell were waiting for her on the bed with all the clothes from the shopping they had done that day, laughing at every piece of clothing they tried on.

- What is all this, a parade? she said with a laugh.

- It's taken you ages to come up Megan, did you have a discussion with Jack?

- Not only did we talk about some faxes and emails that came in, but also that he'll be busy in his office for a few days so he won't be able to use it.

- Is that all there is to it? asked her friend.

-You two are hiding something!

- No grandma, we're not hiding anything. I'm exhausted, I'd like to lie down for a while.

- Sure, let's get everything, girlfriend.

Jack was still sitting at his desk going through his mail and some bills, but even so he kept thinking about everything he had said to Megan. He had labeled her as a woman not fit for him, yes, she was from the city but that was no reason to tell her that she didn't qualify to be a Texan's wife, was he an idiot or what? How could he think of saying something so horrible.

It was so hard to say that she didn't want a serious relationship. He suspected that after that conversation he would never be able to touch her again, and it was to be expected that no woman would have liked her, she wasn't the kind of woman for a man, maybe it was for the best, although he wasn't so sure he wouldn't kiss those fleshy lips again.

A couple of days later Megan was in her room packing her bags, she couldn't fool herself anymore by staying there because in another day or month Jack wouldn't change his mind about her. She was in love with a man who had no desire to get involved with a woman like her, she had to leave before her pregnancy showed, or worse, the symptoms would give her away.

- What are you doing Megan? her friend asked her in surprise.

--Packing!

- I can see that, but why? I thought we were staying longer.

- What else do you want to stay, Melissa? We've already abused Jack's hospitality. So tomorrow we're leaving. - Tomorrow! Meg I...

- I know... sigh. If you want to stay, do it, I'm sure my grandmother will get you some work.

- I can't let you go alone, what about the baby?

- I know you're in love with that cowboy, you shouldn't leave him just because I ask you to. I'll take care of myself.

- I don't feel right leaving you there alone.

- I'll be fine, I love you Mel. But it's time for you to make a life for yourself, if you want to stay, stay and be happy.

- What about Jack? He's the father.

- It's for the best what I'm doing. Promise you won't tell him.

-I'm fine with that. But I think he needs to know, plus I know he likes you Meg.

- He doesn't want anything serious with me, he told me so himself, a baby would only make him stay with me just for him, and that's something he wouldn't stand for.

- It's okay, you know what you're doing.

- Could you ask Rodrigo to take me to the airport early tomorrow morning?

-Sure, I'll talk to him.

How was it possible to feel uncomfortable at home and at dinner time, Jack couldn't understand, and since he'd had the conversation a few days ago with Megan, she no longer sat next to him. That made him feel guilty because she would feel uncomfortable too, he missed her like crazy, he was dying to kiss her and make love to her. What could that possibly mean? Did he like Megan more than he thought he would, he was confused and had lost his appetite completely.

- Jack, are you feeling sick? Grisell asked, pulling him out of his thoughts.

- Nothing, don't worry Grisell. I don't have much of an appetite.

-But it's your favourite dinner!

- Thank you Grisell. If you'll excuse me, I'm going to leave first. Everyone at the table looked at him in astonishment, except the woman who was responsible for his lack of appetite and his out-of-place passages.

Megan waited to hear Jack's office door to tell everyone the news of his departure the next day, to be very discreet. Her grandmother burst into tears hugging her and asking her to visit her more often, how could she give her grandmother so many excuses to avoid visiting her for so many months, if she got pregnant there maybe she could arouse suspicion, especially Jack could get his accounts.

- I'll visit you grandma, don't worry, I'll visit you both!

- So you will leave my little flower. Rodrigo told her with a beaming smile.

- I hope you take good care of her and be good to her.

-I do it every day. I hope to see you here soon.

--Sure thing cowboy!

After Jack retired from dinner everyone began to relax enjoying the dinner which in the end turned into a farewell for Megan. After a good dinner Megan lay on her bed touching her belly wondering what her baby would look like, if it would look like her father or her.

She hoped he would be born healthy and strong, suddenly her eyes began to blur and tears rolled down her cheeks it hurt her to have to leave and be separated from her grandmother and Jack, accepting that she was in love with him had been a hard blow for her and even more so after he had told her that she wasn't his type of woman to marry.

The pregnancy had definitely made her very sensitive, she was crying and sad for nothing, a light knock on the door startled her, who could it be? She wondered, wiping away her tears. She got up and opened the door. Of all the people in the house, the one she thought the least likely to be knocking on her door at that hour could be Jack.

- What are you doing here?

-Why are you crying? He said, wiping the tears from her cheeks.

She turned her face away reluctantly and wiped them away herself.

- Nothing that would interest you. Why did you come here?

- I wanted to know how you were, at dinner you seemed strange. In fact all these days.

- And what did you expect, that I should smile at you every time you crossed my path?

- No, but... I don't really know why I'm here.

-I don't know either, Jack.

Megan's vulnerability was not something he could resist, and he pulled her close and kissed her tenderly. He knew it was wrong, and he might get a slap for it but he didn't care, because he couldn't stay away from her even if he wanted to. But strangely she did something different, she clung to him like a life-board, responding to his kisses with the same degree of tenderness as she did to his. He dragged her to the door of his own room, he had to make love to her no matter what the consequences.
