Chapter 4 No Dating for Gwyneth
The person on the other end was breathing heavily. Even though he didn’t speak a word, Gwyneth felt a chill down her spine.
She paused and looked at the screen.
When she saw Raynard’s name, she had the urge to hang herself.
Immediately, she adapted to her professional tone. “Hello, Mr. Fletcher.”
“Come back to the office.”
Raynard ended the call after leaving a curt order.
Watching her screen dim, Gwyneth pursed her lips sadly and mourned for her day off.
She immediately went back to the dormitory to get changed. Good thing that she didn’t forget to bring a taco back to Janine.
Janine frowned since Gwyneth just went out. “Isn’t there a queue in the bank?”
Gwyneth panted as she ran back to the house. “Mr. Fletcher called and summoned me back to the office. I brought you a taco.”
She put the taco on the table and ran back into her room to change into a business suit.
Raynard had a high standard concerning his employees’ clothing. No casual clothes were allowed in the office.
When Gwyneth returned from her room, Janine was babbling angrily.
“Mr. Fletcher is outrageous. You’ve been on a business trip for over a month. It’s alright that he doesn’t need a break. Why did he deprive you of yours? I should ask HR to put you in the Sales Department. Our department is much better.”
“I don’t have what it takes to be a sales person.” Gwyneth ran out of the door.
It was a 10-minute walk from the dormitory to the office.
Therefore, Gwyneth lived in the dormitory, even though she had a house. It was closer and she could save the transportation expenses.
Gwyneth ran all the way to the president’s office.
She opened the door and saw Raynard standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling window. Sunlight illuminated his handsome silhouette, making him look more noble.
Gwyneth stepped forward and said humbly, “Mr. Fletcher, what can I do for you?”
Raynard turned and shot her a cold look.
Maybe it was because she was hiding something from Raynard. Gwyneth sensed the look had another meaning.
Luckily, Raynard looked away swiftly. “Bring me the Seaward Group’s contract.”
Gwyneth was speechless.
A contract? But Raynard never reviewed contracts by himself.
And he could ask the assistant in the Legal Department to bring him the contract. She was having a day off. Why did he call her for the contract?
Gwyneth couldn’t understand Raynard’s actions, yet she didn’t have the courage to voice her displeasure.
Without questions, she ran to the Legal Department and found the contract Raynard asked for.
Raynard started writing on the contract directly. Soon, he tossed the contract back to Gwyneth. “Edit it based on my alterations.”
“Yes.” Gwyneth nodded.
She went back to her seat with the contract.
As soon as she sat down, she received a text from Janine. Janine was asking how long it was going to take as she wanted to go shopping with Gwyneth.
Although Gwyneth was back in the office, it was still her day off. She replied, “I’m editing the contract with the Seaward Group. See you in 30 minutes.”
It was just simple editing work. 30 minutes was more than enough.
However, when Gwyneth gave Raynard the edited contract, he threw it back to her with new alterations. The process repeated several times.
Gwyneth was a patient woman. Still, she nearly snapped in the end.
Two hours later…
Raynard checked the latest version and said, “OK. It’s good enough for today.”
Gwyneth picked up the contract and asked tentatively, “Are the people of the Seaward Group coming over to sign the contract now?”
If so, her vacation would be totally ruined.
Raynard paused and said, “We’re signing the contract next Monday.”
Gwyneth’s smile froze and she breathed harder.
She thought, “He doesn’t need the contract until Monday. Why does he have to call me back and ask me to edit the contract over and over?” No matter how mad she was, she didn’t dare to complain.
Meeting Raynard’s cold eyes, Gwyneth felt her heart stop. “Is there anything else?”
With a click of Raynard’s lighter, the smell of gas and nicotine filled the room.
Gwyneth had trouble breathing and it wasn’t just because of the smell.
Noticing Raynard’s bad mood, Gwyneth felt her heart nearly jump out of her throat and wondered what caused his sudden mood swing.
As Gwyneth was at a loss for words, Raynard said in a deep voice, “Did you think I was your boyfriend when you picked up my call?”
“What?”
The question caught Gwyneth off guard.
Right away, she realized Raynard was referring to the call before she came back to the office.
She felt embarrassed as she had yelled at Raynard without checking the caller ID.
She wanted to explain, but Raynard continued to speak curtly, “Female employees can’t be in a romantic relationship before 25 years old. That’s a company rule.”
Gwyneth couldn’t remember such a rule.
She tried to recall the new employee orientation and failed to remember any mention of this rule.
Was it a new rule? Did they add it because they were worried the young female employees would get married early and quit?
No matter what, Gwyneth wasn’t dating anyone. To reassure Raynard, she said firmly, “Don’t worry, Mr. Fletcher. I’m not seeing anyone, nor will I get married any time soon.”
The tension in the room lightened significantly at her words.
