Chapter 5 20 Thousand

“Mr. Finnegan? Which Mr. Finnegan?” Linda asked in confusion. She would have slammed the doors if it wasn’t for the expensive suit the man standing outside donned. “Mr. Aiden Finnegan,” the young man said with a smile. When Aiden heard that, he came to the door and asked, “That’s me. And you are?” “Mr. Finnegan, I’m Lucas Burton—Mr. Warren Webb’s secretary. You may call me Lucas,” Lucas replied. Aiden nodded and asked, “Is there anything I can help you with?” When Linda heard that Lucas was from the Webb Family, she panicked and interrupted before Lucas could say anything, “He’s only staying in our house temporarily. He’s not related to us. If you’re here to take him, do as you please.” “Mom, what are you talking about?” Angelina, who was upstairs, heard Linda and frowned. She was skeptical of the situation and guessed that something went wrong after Aiden saved William, resulting in Lucas showing up at their doorstep. However, she still came down the stairs and said, “Aiden just wanted to save him. He doesn’t have any ill intentions!” After Lucas heard Linda and Angelina, he paused for a moment and explained, “You’ve misunderstood. I’m here to thank Mr. Finnegan on behalf of the Webb Family.” “Thank Mr. Finnegan?” Now, it was Linda and Angelina’s turn to be stunned. On the other hand, Aiden stepped aside and said softly, “Come in and have a seat.” Ryan, who had been sitting on the sofa, had since stood up when he heard Lucas introducing himself. When he saw Lucas enter, he was shocked. “It’s you, Mr. Burton!” “What brings you here, Mr. Burton?” he hastily questioned. Lucas looked at Ryan standing before him and furrowed his brows before asking, “Do we know each other?” “Ah. I’m the manager of the project management office, Ryan Neel,” he explained with a somewhat sycophantic smile. Lucas merely nodded and responded, “Oh. So, it’s you.” Actually, he didn’t know who Ryan was. The Webb Corporation had hundreds of different project management offices. So, why would he know which department this Ryan fellow belonged to? “What are you here for?” Lucas suddenly remembered that this was Aiden’s house and questioned in bafflement. “I…” Ryan didn’t know how to answer. He couldn’t say that he was here to marry Angelina, could he? But Aiden came forward and intoned disdainfully, “He’s here to propose to my wife!” “Propose to your wife? Are you pulling my leg, Mr. Finnegan?” Lucas muttered with a disbelieving smile after that ridiculous answer. “To put it simply. He wants my wife to divorce me so that he can marry her.” Aiden explained dispassionately. When Angelina heard him, she became awkward and infuriated. How could he say that so lightly? Even if we’ve not done what a married couple should, it’s not right to say that. So, she quickly cut in the conversation and explained, “Please don’t misunderstand, Mr. Burton. Aiden’s just joking. He’s a relative from my aunt’s side. Right, Aunt Corina?” Corina was smart. She noticed how respectful Lucas was when he was asking for Aiden and Ryan’s behavior the instant that he laid his eyes on Lucas. So, she did a complete 180 and admitted, “Yes. I was just visiting my sister. So, we arrived together.” “Yes. Yes. I’m only visiting them.” Ryan hastily agreed as a bead of sweat rolled down his head. “Really?” Lucas graced him with a dark look. He had keen observational skills after working alongside Warren for so many years. In addition to that, his investigation in the afternoon reported that Aiden was a live-in son-in-law of the Gray Family. So, it was only natural that he quickly picked up on what was actually happening. Still, he didn’t understand why Aiden, who was such a fantastic doctor, would willingly become a live-in son-in-law. “Really! Yes!” Ryan blurted anxiously before turning around to Aiden. “Mr. Finnegan, please forgive me. I didn’t mean it just now.” “That wasn’t what you said. You said killing me was as easy as crushing an ant,” Aiden replied with a mirthless smile. Lucas frowned at those words and glared at Ryan. “Get lost! If I ever replace out that you’re back looking for Mrs. Finnegan, you’ll be fired from the Webb Corporation.” “Yes. Yes. I’ll get lost now. Please don’t be mad at me,” Ryan begged as he stumbled toward the door and almost fell in his haste. When Corina saw how things had taken an unexpected turn, she chimed in, “I’ll be taking my leave as well. I’ve got something to do at home.” Linda finally realized what had happened after Corina left, as things happened so quickly that she couldn’t react in time. “Mom, can you pour a cup of tea for Mr. Burton?” Aiden inquired. “Oh! Sure!” She was still in shock but unconsciously answered Aiden. By the time she realized something was off, she had already entered the kitchen. “That good-for-nothing asked me to make the tea?” Regardless, she was already in the kitchen, and Lucas was in the living room. So, she couldn’t very well act up now. “Mr. Finnegan, Mr. William is alright. Old Mr. Webb wanted me to come to thank you personally. We don’t have any means to contact you, so we did a search and found out that you’re staying here. Please forgive us for the unannounced visit,” Lucas explained apologetically. Aiden waved his hands in dismissal. “It’s alright. The most important thing is that he’s fine.” “It’s all thanks to your treatment on the road that Mr. William survived the ordeal!” Lucas exclaimed gratefully. “Old Mr. Webb asked me to pass this to you. We don’t know your preferences, so it’s a bit basic.” Then, he took a check from his suit pocket and respectfully handed it over with two hands. Linda, who had just come out from the kitchen, heard Lucas mention Aiden’s rescue and saw him hand over the check. At this moment, she once again couldn’t make heads or tails of the situation. What exactly did this good-for-nothing do that the Webb Family’s secretary is here to thank him in person?! “It’s nothing. You’re being too kind. Please take it back,” Aiden said humbly. Even though he was poor now, he couldn’t accept the money just because he saved a person’s life. It was uncharacteristic of him since he was also from a prestigious family. He wasn’t a money-grubbing person. “It’s not nice to reject Mr. Burton’s kindness. We should accept it!” Linda grabbed the check and rushed to look at the number. “One, two, three, four zeroes. 20 thousand!” “Mom, what are you doing? Don’t just take people’s stuff!” Angelina saw that and rushed to stop her, but Linda was entranced by the five-digit number and wouldn’t let her grubby hands off the piece of paper. Aiden furrowed his brows at Linda’s actions but didn’t say anything. “Mr. Finnegan, Old Mr. Webb would also like to invite you to the Webb Residence when Mr. William is discharged from the hospital.” Lucas smiled, acting completely unaffected by what had just happened. It was as though he had gone momentarily blind earlier. “Sure. We’ll see how it goes,” Aiden replied lightly. Since his work there was done, Lucas stood up and bid the Grays goodbye. After he left, Angelina yelled furiously, “Mom! Do you know how embarrassing that was?” “What? Didn’t you hear him say that Aiden saved the Webb Family’s young master? It’s only 20 thousand! Hahaha. Just in time. I could buy that bag I wanted!” Linda said as she unceremoniously plopped down on the sofa. “Mom, that’s Aiden’s money!” she shrieked. “I’ve fed him these three years ever since he’s stayed in the Gray Residence. Besides, I’m his mother-in-law. So, he should give it to me if he knows what’s right,” Linda said nonchalantly. Angelina just turned around and stomped upstairs at her unreasonable words. Aiden also didn’t want to waste his time speaking to Linda, so he followed Angelina up and returned to his room. After they both went up, Linda gradually began to change her mindset regarding Aiden. Has he gotten smarter? 20 thousand just by saving one person. Hmm. I knew something was off with him in the hotel. This is it. If only I knew just how he saved the Webbs’ young master…
