Alpha's One Night Bride -
Alpha’s One Night Bride – Chapter 13
I couldn’t hide my anger. I was angry at the fact that he was being so secretive about this Dorie person. When I entered his office earlier that day, he was on the phone with her but then hung up once I showed up. Now at Onyxfang, he comes face to face with her and he blocks me from their link so I couldn’t hear their conversation.
The more I thought about it the angrier it made me. However, I knew he was also angry, and I didn’t want to make things worse.
“How could you go to Onyxfang alone?” He barked as soon as we got back home.
“I told you, it was for work,” I muttered. “How did you even know I was there?”
“It’s not important,” Jonathan shot back.
“Were you spying on me?” I asked, disbelief in my tone.
“I’m trying to protect you, Arina,” Jonathan argued.
“I didn’t think you had to spy on me to protect me,” I told him, folding my arms across my chest. “Do you not trust me?”
“It has nothing to do with trust. If I wasn’t there, do you know what Dorie would have done?” He asked. His voice sounded strained, worried.
“That reminds me. Who is Dorie? You were on the phone with her earlier and then you had that conversation I couldn’t hear in Onyxfang. What are you hiding?” I couldn’t keep accusatory out of my voice.
“Nothing. I’m not hiding anything, Arina. We used to be colleagues. That’s it,” Jonathan said. I wanted to believe him, but part of me was feeling like there was more to the story.
“Colleagues?” I asked, eyeing him. He met my eyes, grabbing onto my hands and pulling me close to him so my head was on his chest. Hugging me in an embrace.
He was really scared. I had scared him.
“I’m sorry,” I muttered into him. Pinching away the tears that were forming in the corners of my eyes. He kissed the top of my head and held me for a moment longer before releasing me.
“As am I. I’m sorry for following you. I just can’t have anything happen to you. I love you,” he said, lowering his tone. My cheeks reddened.
“I love you.”
…
The next day we went to a dinner party held by Anderson and Marian. It was a formal event for which I had to dress up for. I wore a red gown, created by Essie of course. My curly hair was kept back in a matching red headband to keep the curls from falling into my face.
The dinner party was filled with different Alpha’s and their lunas. Including Alpha Rock and Melissa. Jonathan had warned me that they would be there, and I told him that I couldn’t hide from my father forever. I didn’t want to hide from my father. I wanted him to know I wasn’t afraid of him.
In the center of the establishment was a large marble tabletop with different varieties of food scattered across. Anderson had said that he hunted for most of the food while Marian hired the best chefs to cook and prepare the meals. I had to admit that everything looked delicious, and the smell was mouthwatering.
While gathering food on my plate, I realized I lost Jonathan in the crowd. Thankfully I ran into Mallory and Lucille. I was surprised to see them, considering that neither of them was lunas. But they had explained how Marian invited them due for work purposes. They were meant to promote their work to the guests in a casual manner.
Anything to make a few dollars.
As usual, both girls were chuckling and gossiping about who said what and who was wearing what. Initially, they both seemed surprised to see me but then Mallory broke into a grin.
“Where’s your husband?” She asked as she gave me a side hug.
“I’m not sure,” I admitted. “I lost him somewhere.”
“I’m sure he’ll turn up at some point,” Lucille chimed in. I wasn’t worried about it. Soon enough he was going to come looking for me.
After our argument yesterday, he promised he was going to give me more space and allow me to explore things on my own. But he told me if I were to leave Sabrebite to visit another pack, I need to tell him and I can’t go alone.
Before I could say anything more, I was side-checked by a tall woman with long slender legs and a petite figure. She wore a dazzling green gown that her breasts nearly popped out of. Her brown sleek hair was long and ended where her butt began.
As she turned to size me up, it was her ember eyes that made me recognize her.
Dorie.
“Oops. Sorry,” she said. Though there wasn’t an ounce of “sorry” in her voice.
I hadn’t yet seen her in her human form. In her werewolf form, I thought she was beautiful, I hadn’t realized how breathtaking her human form was too.
I felt the air getting caught in my throat.
Jonathan was standing on the other end of the venue; he was talking with Anderson and Marian. They were laughing at some joke that Anderson had probably told. I had never seen Marian laughing up until that moment; it was nice to see she had another side of her as well.
Dorie noticed Jonathan around the same time I did and before I could excuse myself to go join him, she was already heading towards him. They locked eyes for a moment and Jonathan seemed almost nervous. Dorie pulled him in for a hug, lingering there for a few moments. Jonathan, being polite, didn’t shove her away, but also didn’t return her hug. Telling from his face, he looked annoyed.
“I can’t believe she showed up,” Lucille whispered to Mallory. They were both eyeing Dorie and Jonathan as well.
I almost forgot they were there.
“And have the nerve to approach Jonathan. Like she knows he’s married now, right?” Mallory asked. I snapped them both a look, to which they didn’t notice.
“Who even invited her here?” Lucille said, she sounded bothered.
“What’s her story?” I asked them; I was afraid to know the answer but something inside of me needed to know. They both looked at one another and frowned.
“They used to date,” Mallory informed me. I felt my heart sinking into my stomach. He had told me that he and Dorie were just colleagues but failed to mention the fact that they dated.
“What?” I asked, feeling my words get caught in my throat.
“Yeah,” Lucille added. “She was a high-profile suitor for him. That is until you came into the picture.”
Jonathan lied to me. How could he have lied to me?
Before I could say anything more or even confront Jonathan, Rock stood before me. His top l*p curled up in a snarl. I was wondering when he was going to make an appearance and make himself known to me. I folded my arms across my chest and attempted to look as though I didn’t care.
“Now that you are a luna, you should return home to Ironclaw,” he told me, as though he didn’t kick me out of Ironclaw.
“Excuse me?” I asked, keeping my voice even. “That isn’t for you to decide. Besides, I’m banished from Ironclaw.”
“That was before you became a luna. Now you need to return to your family so we can celebrate properly. Of course, you’d have to bring Jonathan,” Rock said.
“I already celebrated with my family and Rock, you are not my family,” I told him dryly. He stepped closer to me, and I was hit with the foul stench of his warm breath on my face.
“You will watch how you speak to me. You need to learn to behave properly.”
