Alpha's One Night Bride
Alpha’s One Night Bride – Chapter 69

“You’re sure somebody saw you?” Jonathan asked as I paced around the living room.

Emee was laying on her playmat on the floor as she cooed excitedly.

“Yes,” I told him. “There was no doubt about it. It was another wolf. They didn’t want me to see them.”

“Do you think it was one of Rock’s people?” Jonathan asked, he was growing worried as well.

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “Possibly.”

“I’m not going to stick around to replace out,” Jonathan said, shooting to his feet from the couch.

I narrowed my eyes at him.

“What are you planning on doing?” I asked.

“Putting a stop to his bullshit,” he said as he stormed towards the front door.

Before I could protest to him just barging into Rock’s house and starting something with him, as soon as he pulled the door open, he was stopped by a small figure that stood there wide-eyed. Her mouth dropped open as she stared between Jonathan and me, trying to comprehend what was happening.

I’m sure the look on Jonathan’s face confused her because he went from confused to shocked.

I stood there staring at her with disbelief written all over my face.

“Jessica?” I breathed.

Her eyes landed on me for the final time and then she broke out into a grin.

“I’m back!” She cooed.

Without meaning to, I ran towards her, pushing past Jonathan almost forcefully, and threw my arms around her in a tight embrace. She chuckled as she stumbled backward and hugged me back. Tears sprung from my eyes.

I hadn’t seen her since Anderson’s funeral and even then, it was brief. We only exchanged a few words of condolences but then we went our separate ways. Things have been so busy lately that neither of us was able to reach out to one another.

I couldn’t help but feel guilty for neglecting my best friend.

“I can’t believe you are here!” I cried.

She chuckled again.

“I missed you so much,” she cried in return.

“I’ll let you girls get caught up. I’ll be back,” Jonathan said; his angered expression returning to him.

Jessica looked at me, perplexed.

“What’s going on?” She asked in a whisper as Jonathan stormed passed us.

“A lot,” I told her as I motioned for her to follow me into the house.

As I got inside, Emee began crying from her place on the mat. I heard Jessica gasping from beside me as she got a glimpse of the baby.

“Is that…?” She breathed, her eyes widening.

“My daughter, Emee,” I told her. She exhaled with a small shriek.

“Emee…” she whispered.

“It’s short for Emlin Ree. After my mother and Jonathan’s father, Regan,” I explained.

I picked Emee up from the ground and brought her to Jessica who was waiting eagerly to take her from me. I chuckled as she held Emee, cooing at her and poking her nose playfully.

“Oh my goodness, Arina. She’s beautiful. She looks just like you!” She cooed.

“I think she looks more like Jonathan. But yeah; she’s definitely beautiful,” I agreed.

“How are you feeling?” She asked staring around my body.

Last she saw me, I wasn’t doing so good with this pregnancy, so it was only right that she’d be concerned.

“I’m alright; I had a lot of help to get me through it,” I told her.

She frowned and for a moment I saw a flash of regret and almost hurt running through her features.

“I didn’t mean it like that,” I told her quickly; I didn’t want her to think I was upset with her for not being there.

I understood she couldn’t be; though, truth be told, I wasn’t quite sure where she went off to. One minute she was here with everyone else, and the next minute she was gone. I couldn’t hold that against her though; things have been so crazy lately.

“No, I know,” she said softly. “I just feel bad I couldn’t be here.”

“I know,” I told her in return. “What happened to you?” I found myself asking without meaning to.

“A lot,” she told me.

She was still holding Emee when she sat on the couch, I sat beside her.

“I found my mate,” she told me after a breath of silence.

I shot her a look.

“You did?” I asked.

She smiled; her cheeks turn light pink.

“It’s Greggory,” she said.

I frowned as she said his name. I knew Greggory was the Alpha of Moon-valley, which is the same pack Jessica is from. When I was 10 years old, I left Ironclaw and ended up in Moon-valley to study art. That’s where I met and befriended Jessica.

However, last time I checked, Greggory was married and has been for a very long time. I remember they both came to my wedding. Something wasn’t adding up.

“I thought he was married?” I asked, eyeing her suspiciously.

She stared down at Emee almost sheepishly.

“He is…” she whispered.

“Jessica…” I breathed in shock.

“I don’t know how it happened,” she tried to explain. “One minute we were just talking like we normally do and then the next thing I knew we were naked.”

“That doesn’t mean he’s your mate though, Jessica,” I told her; I couldn’t keep the annoyance out of my tone.

“But he is,” she said back. “He told me that he’s known for a long time. But I was too young, and his family wanted him to marry. So, he married Rachel. He’s planning on leaving her.”

“If he knew you were his mate, he shouldn’t have married her in the first place,” I told her.

“I know that,” she told me. “I’m getting closer to being 18 and I can feel the mate pull coming from him. You know what I mean?”

I didn’t want to admit it, but I knew exactly what she meant. I was feeling the same pull towards Jonathan since replaceing out we were mates.

“I really love him,” she said softly.

I could see it on her face that she was telling me the truth, but I was more worried about Greggory playing her for a fool. I couldn’t handle her getting heartbroken.

“Please be careful,” I warned her gently.

She could see it on my face that I was worried; she gave me a side hug and assured me that she was going to be as careful as she could.

Emee stirred uncomfortably in her arms for a moment; she was probably getting hungry. Since waking up, my body has been too weak to produce a good amount of milk. So, I’ve been giving her baby formula instead.

“So, what’s been going on around here?” She asked as she handed Emee back to me. I made my way into the kitchen to grab a pre-made bottle from the fridge. Making my way back into the living room, I sat with Emee cradled in my arms. She began sucking away at the bottle instantly, filling her little belly to satisfaction.

“Where do I even begin,” I told her, trying to think about all the events that have happened recently. “We found out that Jess has been hiding something insane.”

Her eyes widened.

“What?” Jessica asked.

“Her actual name is Jess Davis…” I told her. Her mouth dropped open. “As in Benjamin Davis,” I confirmed before she could respond.

“Wait…she’s a Davis?” Jessica asked anyways. I nodded as my response as Jessica allowed for that information to settle in. “That would make Jonathan…”

“A Davis as well,” I finished for her. “Which means he’s supposed to be the next Overseer.”

Her mouth dropped wider; I thought it was about to hit the ground.

“He’s the next Overseer?” She repeated in awe. “That’s incredible. What else did I miss?”

“We found out what Rock is planning,” I told her. She waited patiently for me to finish. “He wants to take Emee and sell her to a third-world country.”

“I’m sorry… what?” She asked in shock. “For what exactly?”

“I’m not sure. Could be for anything. Slavery, adoption, food…” I grimaced at that last part.

“Food?” She repeated darkly.

I nodded.

“Yes,” I confirmed.

“So, is that where Jonathan is going?” She asked.

I nodded again.

“I’m not really sure what he’s planning on doing. I was at the riverbed, and I heard someone watching me from the bushes. We are suspecting it was someone working for Rock,” I told her. “When I transitioned, I saw my reflection in the water and my fur was completely different than normal.”

“Different how?” She asked.

“It wasn’t just blonde anymore. It was also brown with silvery highlights. My eyes also had silver in them as well,” I explained.

“That sounds really pretty,” she breathed.

I nodded in agreement.

“Oddly enough, it was. I transitioned back into my human form to see if my person was affected by it as well. But it wasn’t thankfully. But once I transitioned, I could hear a ruffling sound coming from the bushes. They didn’t want me to know they were there. I came right home and now Jonathan is going after Rock.”

“That’s heavy…” she breathed. “Why do you think your wolf changed?”

I thought about it for a moment before answering; I gazed out the window and up at the moon’s rays that were peaking through the blinds.

“Maybe since I saw my mom…” I said more to myself than to her; I forgot that I hadn’t told her about how I saw my mom through a dream.

“Your mom?” She asked in wonder.

“Yes, she came to me in a dream. It was so real though; she warned me about Rocks plan and warned me away from Silverside,” I explained.

“Why Silverside?” She asked.

“I just found out that Nikini is also a Davis. She’s most likely the one who sent Rock that letter my mother wrote. My guess is, she’s working with Rock.”

Jessica gasped.

“Do you think Boris is on it too?” She asked; I remembered her obsession with the Conway family, and I couldn’t help but feel a bit guilty about breaking this news to her.

“I mean, he is the country’s greatest and first detective. It would amaze me if he didn’t have some kind of idea of what was going on,” I told her.

She exhaled and her face fell; she looked disappointed. I couldn’t blame her. I was disappointed too. I trusted Boris and now I feel betrayed.

“That’s a shame…” she whispered.

“Yeah…” I agreed.

“What else did your mom say?” She asked.

“She’s the white moon goddess,” I told her.

Her eyes widened in amazement.

“What? Really?” She asked.

“Yes. She looked beautiful and so happy,” I breathed, remembering my mother’s silvery and white aura and gorgeous white gown decaled with autumn flowers.

“You think that’s why your wolf changed?” She asked.

I shrugged.

“I’m not sure; but it could be,” I told her. After a brief pause, I added, “There’s something else that you should know too.” She waited patiently for me to continue. “Graham was here; he tried to start a war with amongst our packs. Thankfully, Jonathan stopped him, and it killed him. However, we have reason to believe that it doesn’t stop there…”

“Actually…” Jessica began slowly. “That’s kind of why I came all the way here. Besides to see my best friend of course. But…” she paused as she stared around my frowning features. “The war didn’t end with Graham dying. He started something bigger than even himself… he started a revolution, and it’s hit Moon-valley.”

And so it begins…
