An Alpha's Charge -
Chapter 11
I Am What?
After Lane settled, she grabbed a bite to eat and took a shower; she crawled into bed and napped. A couple of hours later, she woke up, grabbed her phone, and called her attorney.
“Lane, where are you?” Her attorney asked without so much as a hello, how are you doing?
“Not sure, but I will replace out. Listen, I have been considering selling all the businesses and moving to Alaska. I need to separate myself from the lifestyle I used to have. I cannot do it anymore and need to move on. What do I need to do from here?”
“I will handle it on this end; I have been expecting this to happen sooner than this. Ruth and John would be proud of you for holding on as long as you did. It is time for you to replace yourself, Lane. I will keep you posted on the proceedings.”
“Thanks, Scott; I appreciate it very much.”
She hung up her phone and then headed to the bathroom. She did not know what these people were, but the place looked familiar, and she could not figure out why.
After Ramiel got off the phone with an alliance, he called Duke and let out a long breath before he answered his phone. He did not know how he would tell him he had found his mate since he had never wanted one. She took his breath away at the airport, and when she walked up to him asking who Ramiel was, he could not breathe as the sound of his name coming off her perfect lips had his bear roaring on his hind legs, trying to get to her and her bear. She had no clue who or what she was and that supernaturals were around her.
“Duke, she is a bear shifter, and not sure if she even knows. He is looking into it further.”
“How do you know Rami? You never wanted a mate.”
“I know they noticed each other.”
“You will have to ask her questions about her past, where she is originally from, who her parents are, etc... How is she involved with Wade? Get personal with her even if it pisses her off.”
“She met him through her friend on the island.”
“Her friend’s name?”
“Vye spelled with a ‘y’ not ‘I.’ I do not know her last name. She is also a big drug dealer and whore if that helps.” He shrugs, but Duke cannot see through the phone.
“I will look at it from my end to see if there is any other person that may is affiliated with her or them.”
They ended the call and got ready for bed. Ramiel looked at his phone one last time before charging it, as he did not like the battery running down. He woke up with a pounding on his window. He squinted his eyes open to get the blurriness out of them and walked to the window, where he found a figure nearby. He could not determine who it was; he opened the window and saw a woman half-naked.
“What do you want, Alecia?”
“Baby, I want you.”
“Go away and never return.” He growled at her.
“I am coming in….”
“NO, YOU ARE NOT!” he yelled, pushing down the window and closing the blinds.
She was supposed to be dead, and he did not know why she was trying to come in outside his home. He never had anything to do with her, and he did not know how she found him or why she found his pack. It was odd that she suddenly showed up when Lane came.
Ramiel contacted the one he knew and told him who was in his pack. He also told his warriors to get chains to grab her and put her in the dungeons. Since the attacks on the shifters had increased, he had to replace a way to keep his people safe no matter what it took.
He got out of bed and headed next door to ensure that Lane’s windows, doors, and everything else was secure so nobody could attack her. When he got to the front door, it was ajar, and as he walked in, he saw blood and noticed a struggle of some sort. He walked in, looking around for Lane, and noticed she had bathed.
She was out of it, looking pale and non-responsive. Ramiel grabbed a towel and hauled her out of the house, rushing to the hospital. He told the doctor what had happened and started pushing fluids into her body. She closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep once again.
The doctor took X-rays to see if there were any broken bones; several had healed but not completely. The doctor did not understand where the other broken bones came from but noted them in the chart.
She looked at the man sitting in the chair next to her bed with his hands lying on hers; she squeezed his hand to let him know she was awake. His eyes shot open and squeezed hers back: ‘I will get the doctor.’ She shook her head, trying to speak, but nothing came out as her throat was parched and tubes running down it.
“Hey, don’t talk right now. I will get you some water when I return, yes?”
She shook her head and closed her eyes again when she heard a voice. Her eyes shot open, looking around. There was nobody back in the room yet. She thought she was going crazy; she knew her parents’ names, but it was not their voice.
“Lane, do not be afraid, for you have kept me at bay for many years now; I am your companion, your other half. We are shifters; my name is Snow, and we are polar bears. Do not be afraid our mate is here with us, and he will help you.”
She had the look of doe eyes when Ramiel came back in with the doctor. He went to the opposite side, asking her what was wrong; she looked frightened. She pointed to her throat, and he got her a drink as she sipped from the straw; he had to control her thirst a little since her tubes were still in her.
“She has a few fractures in her ribs and legs, but she is a shifter, and her bear will help her heal much quicker now.” The doctor stated.
“Anything else I should know about, doctor?”
“Yes, there are broken bones from the past years that healed but should have been in a cast. Hopefully, her bear will heal those. Once she shifts a few times, please bring her back for more X-rays so we can see what we are up against.
The doctor left the room as a nurse came in to unhook the tubes and IVs from her arms. She was a champion at all that was happening but was not immune to being in a hospital as she had seen plenty of them in her time. Lane is twenty-six years old and has been on her own since she was six. She had blocked out those memories from years past to survive. It was her bear that kept her from hurting so much.
“Ramiel, when you were out, I heard something in my head; it was a voice. She said her name is Snow, and we are a shifter?”
“Hmm, well…Yes, you are a shifter, she is your bear, and according to Ande, my bear, we are mates. They have already made that connection, but please do not be afraid of her. She is your strength and rock, the voice of reason, fighter, and healer; know I will always be here for both of you.” He gave her a small smile and kissed her forehead.
The doctor released her, knowing she should be fully healed and well cared for. Ramiel had to contact Duke, letting him know her bear spoke to Lane, but she had not shifted and would soon. Duke told him through text that he would be there to help, but something was bothering him, and he had to ask.
“Why has she not shifted before now?” Duke asked.
“She was in the hospital, and her bear appeared, letting her know she was there.”
“OK, but why all of a sudden and not before?”
“She has been abused in all the foster homes she was in.” Nothing had been said after the text was sent.
She could handle that and communicate with her people back home. For some reason, she needed to stay here and learn about her heritage. She could feel the pull to Ramiel but needed more information to understand what she was.
When she was released from the hospital, Ramiel had her in bed to rest some more. He went to the kitchen to make her dinner and bring her some water and juice. He gave her laptop to her once he set it up so she could do some work after dinner.
