Arrogant Man VS Unyielding Woman -
Chapter 313 You Owe Me
Henry was stunned on hearing Jean's words. His face was livid and flushed. Even the upper edge of his ears started to turn reddish. He turned his face in the opposite direction and stared in delirium. He didn't like Jean's last statements, which made him feel agitated. "Father, you should remember that our daughter-father relationship will turn into partnership from this moment on. You can't blackmail me emotionally later. And you owe me no matter if you are willing to do that or not." Jean stated ironically with her eyes fixed on him. She didn't want to give wrong impression about her to Henry. She made it all clear to him what he should be expecting from their cooperation.
Originally, she didn't want to be so straightforward. But apparently, she found that Henry had become slow-witted after being in a coma for so long. So, she couldn't help but say what she really wanted.
'Wasn't he very quick-witted? Coma showed its ill effects on him, ' Jean thought.
Earlier, Henry had been able to quickly figure out how to deal with Jean or what he should do next to gain any advantages from Zed as long as Joy urged him to do so. That time, he had been damn smart to understand the recent conversation within seconds. Now, Jean had spoken to him in such an uncomplicated manner. She would be speechless if Henry was still unclear about what he should do and his own identity.
"I've got it," Henry turned his face only to utter those few words. As soon as he finished speaking, he moved his face away from Jean. He was behaving very strangely from the way he used to before. It was weird for Jean to see Henry that way.
"I am just reminding you in good faith," Jean unknowingly explained to Henry with a deep sigh on seeing such a difference in his personality. "You better wake up in the presence of Joy and Shirley. On top of that, you have to behave naturally when you wake up, so that they won't become suspicious. So, be careful. If you won't do as I've told you to, you should be clear what will be the consequences of your actions. And be ready for taking responsibility for those consequences. I am not going to say anything more. I will come to visit you again after a few days. By that time, I hope that you will be willing to cooperate with me to replace out the fact about my mother's death."
Jean walked out of the ward without casting another glance at Henry as soon as she finished her words. Time had turned her into a stone-hearted person.
After all, Henry was still in a coma as far as Joy and Shirley knew. She couldn't stay there for too long, in order to not arouse their suspicions. She wanted them to believe that Jean was only there to visit his unconscious father and nothing more. "Jean..." Before she stepped out of the ward, Jean heard Henry's hesitant slow voice. That voice gave a shock to Jean, as she had never heard so much pain in Henry's voice.
She turned back and focused her eyes on that man lying on the sickbed at the corner of the ward. Hishaggard face was full of wrinkles.
"If your mother wasn't..." Henry stammered with a tinge of panic on his face. But immediately, he waved his hand in a dismissing manner and said, "You just go!"
Jean's face suddenly scrunched into quizzical expressions with her brows raised. After taking a deep look at Henry, she stepped out of the ward with Moore. She was confused on seeing such a painful and weak reaction of Henry. Initially, she wanted to know what Henry was saying but something stopped her from pursuing him.
Seeing that the door of his ward had been closed, Henry took a deep breath. At last, he closed his eyes in despair. He was all alone in his ward once again. His mind was feeling kind of dizzy right now from all the conversations he had had in the past few minutes. "Jean, what do you think your father wanted to say to you?" Moore asked with his eyebrows furrowed tightly while closely following Jean to her ward. He was perplexed and quite curious about what Henry had said at last when they left.
"I have no idea. And I don't want to know." Jean shook her head in denial with a bitter smile on her face as she sat on her bed in her ward. She was feeling kind of tired from all the things that had happened.
She knew a lot about Henry, as she had spent quite a lot of time handling him and his wishes.
"What if he knows about the truth behind your mother's death? And he wanted to tell you about it." Moore asked Jean with many signs of worry on his face. He took the seat beside Jean's bed. He was not satisfied by the way Jean had reacted to his father.
"I have investigated my mother's death. He might not know the truth behind it. If you know him well, you could understand from the way he replied today that he is not aware of anything related to my mother." Jean sighed, "Yes, he is ruthless and cruel. He divorced my mother as soon as he was with Joy. But he wouldn't have taken great pains to divorce my mother if he really intended to kill her."
"Why did your mother..." Moore asked Jean with great shock. He was startled to the core on hearing Jean's words. But before he could finish his question, Jean interrupted him and said,"My mother was unwilling to divorce Henry. But Joy even moved into the Wen family's house and forced my mother to leave the place. In that situation, my mother had no choice but to divorce him. I know she must have felt a lot of pain in doing that. Shortly after that, my mother suffered from a serious disease and passed away. At that time, my maternal grandmother and I didn't even suspect a little about my mother's death. We were naive, so it never came to our mind that someone could be behind it at all. It was not until..."
It was not until today that Jean became suspicious about the fact behind her mother's death, when Joy blurted out some words on impulse. Joy's impulsive talks led Jean to believe that there was something wrong and she needed to replace the truth behind it. Although Jean's mother was gentle, she was stubborn and aggressive which was not accepted by many people and due to which she had made quite a lot of enemies. In spite of this, she was still a strong and brave woman. Thus, it was impossible that she could have collapsed only because of the great trauma from her divorce with Henry. This couldn't have been the cause of her death in the end. She was a woman who could take a whole lot of troubles in her face without faltering from them.
At the thought of all this, Jean realized that previously she had been too naive in reading people's mind. And she had been easy to manipulate. She felt ashamed and pity on herself.
Now, she knew that her mother had been murdered.
This thought sent shivers racing down Jean's back. It would be the best if Henry hadn't known the fact behind her mother's death, or else Jean would definitely not let him off the hook. And it could prove to be very troublesome for their relationship. "Your mother has passed away so many years ago. It is so unimaginable that you haven't discovered the hidden secret behind it until now. And as so much time has passed, it would be more problematic for you to search for clues at the present time. Jean. Why all things have been conspired against you in the past few days?" Moore asked when he walked over to Jean from his chair and stared at her sympathetically. He was feeling sad and pity for Jean.
"So far, for all things that have happened, it was because I was too innocent and naive. At that time, I rarely experienced any hardship except that Joy, Shirley and Winner only used to replace faults in me. That was the simpler time. Over the past half a year, I have experienced too much, grown fast and learnt a lot. So maybe, the more experienced I became, the earlier I was able to replace troubles surrounding me. Or perhaps the god thinks that I have withstood enough trials! And so, he has given me the chance to replace out the truth behind my mother's death..."
Jean gave a tiresome sigh with a smirk. She was searching for answers to her problems by herself.
"You cannot give up. Moreover, you should stay strong in these conditions." Moore encouraged her.
Whatever the final answer about her mother's death would be, Jean would have to go through one of the hardest time of her life.
"Hmm." Jean replied gratefully and felt very excited while gazing at Moore. She realized how Moore was encouraging her from time to time.
Undoubtedly, Jean wouldn't have dared to directly go to Henry's ward if Moore hadn't kept her company. His presence provided a great amount of support to her in facing Henry.
Moore was the one that had endowed Jean with courage and belief.
He was also the one that had been with Jean when she most needed someone's company. Though he himself was sick, he didn't leave Jean's side.
"Moore, do you feel as if you've owed me something or feel very tired after getting acquainted with me?" Jean joked with Moore at the thought of his company and help. She was really thankful for Moore to be here for her.
Moore knew that it was just a joke, but he intentionally pulled a long face and asked, "Why do you ask me that? I feel very glad to have known you! As you see, we are friends in adversity. I have been hospitalized, so have you. We have kept each other company so that we are never feeling bored while we are here."
"But all day long, you kept moving around with me, starting from the day you were hospitalized here. It is because of me that you haven't got the time to rest and recover well." Jean said with kind of slow voice while her eyes showed guilt.
"My wounds mean nothing to me. They are not that much of a big deal for me. So, don't worry." Moore comforted her while shaking his head, "I would have left the hospital very early if the doctor didn't ask me to stay here for further observation. It's because of them that I am still here. Domestic hospitals still fall behind in some areas. They need improvement in this field."
"Okay, cut it out!" Jean replied with a burst of laughter,"The doctor has asked you to stay here for your own good. From your saying, it seems as if you have been kidnapped by the hospital."
"Yes. In fact, I really feel that I have been kidnapped. It makes me feel trapped here. I couldn't have stayed here for so long if you hadn't arrived here. It's because of your company that my stay in this hospital seems tolerable to me." Moore nodded at her seriously. All the things that he told her were true. Her company made him pass his days with ease.
"Moore..." Jean said seriously while the smile on her face gradually disappeared, "You told me that you studied business administration. And previously, Joy was really scared by your disposition. It was clearly visible from her reaction. Anyway, you don't look like a frail scholar!"
In actuality, Moore's complexion still looked dull and unhealthy after days of rest and recovery. It seemed that he hadn't recovered his nutrient levels to the fullest. He needed more time to recover to his full health.
But he didn't look so pale and haggard as he was looking at the time of surgery. So surely, his health had improved in comparison to before.
The lines and textures on his face were as delicate as carvings. In addition, there were muscles all over his body. Deep within his muscles, great potential was hidden. It was clearly visible that he was a person who had done a lot of physical work. Such power was admirable and enviable.
"I..." Moore stammered, as shyness overcame him upon hearing Jean's compliments. Then, he added, "I have many interests and hobbies, including climbing, fencing, boxing and rock climbing. I can do almost all types of exercises. Physical labor is not that much difficult for me."
"My god! I have never thought that you could have so many interests. I only considered that you were kind of serious, but not that much into adventures." Jean cried out in excitement. She was filled with zest on imagining Moore as a sporty person. Then, she realized it was no wonder that Moore was alive and kicking within a few days after his car accident in which he received such severe wounds. It was his previous workout which had helped him in reviving.
There was also another thing that had puzzled Jean. Apparently, Jean noticed that Moore was yelling in great pain while undergoing surgeries. But why did he refuse to relieve his pain with medicines? It would be easier for him if he would have taken them. She surely wanted to know about the reason behind his decision.
