Arrogant Man VS Unyielding Woman -
Chapter 544 Beautiful Friend
"You don't need to be grateful, Moore. I just hope that you won't regret your choices. I heard that Edna's business have skyrocketed over the past few years," Jean said in haste with a reluctant smile.
Moore sneered at Jean's comment. "Her business will still be meaningless regardless of how huge of a deal it becomes. Hanley spent money so extravagantly. Her money would not be enough to compensate for her son's enormous amount of bets." He shrugged carelessly. "Well, you know Hanley is addicted to gambling." Jean's eyes widened in surprise at Moore for knowing about Hanley's addiction to gambling. After a while, she smiled and said, "Does knowing about Hanley's like for gambling mean you also care about him?" "Of course not. I was just bothered by him so much that I paid more attention to him. After all, you have to know someone's whereabouts when one always comes only to cause you troubles, so that you will have an idea on how to deal with him when the time comes." A bitter smile formed on Moore's face as he uttered these words.
"And so, if I got it right, you are going to use this detail about him to threaten him, so he would stop badgering you?" With a frown on her face, Jean asked Moore very skeptically.
"If not, then what else can I do? Besides, there are already evidences that prove I am right. Aren't they?" Without removing his gaze on Jean, Moore continued, "I wouldn't have given up and threatened him to come to a compromise if I didn't know that he was addicted to gambling and needed money for all the debts."
Jean nodded. "Well, that also sounds reasonable." She paused and continued, "I don't know what you are thinking, but whatever you decide, I hope that you can be happy in the end."
Moore stared at Jean a little gratefully despite being full of bitterness.
'Jean, I know that you don't believe what I have said. I even can't believe it myself.
One thing is for sure. I hate all members of the Bai family, a lot more than I can imagine. More so, I hate them replaceing me and badgering me every chance they could get, again and again and one after another.
In order to lead a happy and peaceful life as before, I have no choice but to give up... to give up all that I shouldn't have had.
I know that you feel sorry for me, but nothing else is more important for me than you at this very moment. Do you know that?
No, of course, you surely don't know that.
I even made a deal with Hanley, the man I hate the most, so that I won't make you upset and worried. You already have too much in your hands.
Then again, I couldn't help but wish that everything can end smoothly.
I also hope that my relationship will be completely severed with the Bai family, 'thought Moore, feeling despair inside him.
After a while, Jean and Moore finally went back to the Qi house, but Zed was still not at home.
At that afternoon, the two of them drank cups of coffee and ate some dessert. Both of their eyes were glowing with excitement because of the caffeine and sugar they had just taken in.
After enjoying their afternoon tea, they both stayed inside the living room, sitting on the sofa watching TV. Moore then reached out for his phone and dialed.
Jean noticed this gesture from her periphery and asked with curiosity, "Who are you going to call?"
As far as she knew, Moore only knew a handful of people in the H City, let alone friends, and especially as soon as he got here, he already spent most of his time in hospital.
'Who can even make friends while stuck in a hospital room with an IV on one hand?' Jean wondered and thought about all the possible scenarios to possibly figure out how he could have gained friends in the city. Before she could think, Moore spoke and answered her question. He didn't even remove his attention on his phone. "One of my friends abroad. Just now, I received a short message, saying that my friend wanted to come here to see me."
Jean's eyes widened and mouth agape. 'Moore's friend?
Coming here to see him?'
At the thought of this, Jean was suddenly in high spirits. Then, she asked Moore in high curiosity, "Is your friend male or female?"
At her question, Moore turned to look at Jean. From her facial expressions, he suddenly realized what Jean was thinking about. Before he could explain, his call was answered. He immediately stood and walked a few steps away from Jean. "Hello, Avery," Moore said intimately. Despite stepping away, Jean could still hear him.
'Avery, Jean repeated this name in her heart.
Jean cupped her face in her hands and raised her legs on the couch, staring at Moore with a gleam in her eyes.
'Avery. This sounds like a name of a girl,' she thought.
Suddenly, she felt excited. Her gaze was kept on Moore with a bright glow in her eyes.
Moore felt nothing but uneasy all over as he noticed Jean's weird and uncomfortable stare. He looked away but couldn't stop glancing at Jean every now and then as he talked on the phone as if Jean's stare was trying to attract him from looking back. He suddenly felt bewildered at how Jean's aura was glowing towards his direction.
As the phone call finally came to an end, Moore walked over towards Jean and sat beside her. He flicked her forehead gently with his fingers and asked, "Why are you staring at me that way? I'm pretty sure that I'm not a tasty meal." Jean moved her body and faced all her attention on Moore before she interrupted him. "Tell me! Who is Avery?"
Sighing, Moore felt a little helpless, but he still replied frankly, "She was one of my classmates when I studied in the university. Why are you asking?"
"Is she kind? Smart? Beautiful? How about your relationship? Is there anything going on between you two?"
Beaming from ear to ear, Jean continued asking, ignoring Moore's question entirely.
"Yes, she is rather attractive and good-looking! In fact, I think she is more beautiful than you." Moore didn't say with a smile until he furrowed his eyebrows and looked as if he thought in a disguised manner for quite a long while. Originally, he planned to enrage Jean, so that she wouldn't continue questioning him intently.
However, apparently, he didn't know Jean completely yet.
At that very moment, she concentrated all her attention on Avery, so she turned a deaf ear to Moore's jeer. Instead, she became more excited and said, "Really? If she is really more beautiful than me, then she must be a beauty." "Yes, she is a beauty, but why does that make you happy? Jean, if I am unclear of your sexual orientation, then I will doubt that you are..."
Moore asked back, as he was puzzled a lot by her words and her reaction.
"I will be able to stay assured since she is a beauty. When will she come? Did she say how long she will stay?" Jean asked while staring at Moore, who was not sure if she even heard what he was saying.
Moore blinked twice and sighed. He had no choice but to reply as he couldn't figure out what Jean was planning up her sleeve. "She will come here by plane at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning."
"Okay, got it. Ten o'clock, tomorrow morning," Jean repeated with a smile. The excitement inside her just kept surging as soon as she knew when Moore's friend would come. Immediately, she continued, "I will ask Zelda to tidy up the guest room. Then, you go to the supermarket with me to buy some food, so that I can entertain your beautiful friend very well tomorrow."
Moore frowned at Jean and was greatly baffled by her words. "Oh no, Jean. Avery will replace a hotel and stay there when she comes to the H City. Why shall you ask her to stay here?"
"Well, she is your friend. Your friend is also a friend of mine. We can ask her to stay here at home with us, and I'm sure Zed wouldn't mind. Do you really want her to stay in a hotel by herself? I really don't know what you are thinking, Moore," Jean replied a little disappointed, as she was infuriated by his words.
"Well, I..." Before he finished his words, Moore betrayed a wry smile and continued, "My relationship with her isn't so good that I can't even take her home."
"Moore, saying something like this is futile." Moore's words made Jean angrier, and then, she added, "She is travelling so far away from a foreign country to the H City for you, and so why are you trying to tell me that your relationship with her isn't so good? Are you trying to frighten me? Or are you lying to yourself?"
"No, I really mean it. What I just said is true." Moore got anxious upon hearing what Jean had said to him. Then, he explained, "I have no idea why she is coming here, but I am certain that whatever her reason for coming here won't be definitely because of me. Perhaps, she is coming here for some other businesses and will just visit me while she's here. Jean, you really don't need to entertain her for my sake. It is really unnecessary."
"You know, Moore, so far, I ultimately understand why you don't have many friends." As she said this, Jean couldn't help sighing heavily and continued, "Since she is specially coming here to meet you, you have to entertain her well however good or bad your relationship with her is. As I said, your friend is also my friend. You are afraid of being troubled, but I am not. As you know, I like lively atmosphere the most, and besides, there are many guest rooms in this house. If she stays here, our huge and empty house will feel livelier, so it's a deal. Avery will stay here, and I will not allow her to stay in a hotel, no matter how long she will have to stay."
Without another word and another look at Moore, Jean directly went to replace Zelda. Moore stayed behind, wanting to say more against that idea but hesitated and kept silent instead, knowing fully well that it would be difficult for him to change Jean's mind once she already made up. I
