Heaven to use in place of my signature.

Three days after buying Club Heaven, I brought Renda to Club Heaven and let her go with Grace to search the records for any other information they could replace. Before leaving, Grace gave me coded pages and a contract to be signed along with the stamp of Club "Be arrogant about it. She's greedy, any promise of more work will get her to tell you things."

"What about the money?" I asked her, intrigued by her coaching. "I don't think I can just write her a check, right?"

She offered me the payment request log where I would take her banking information and banking information that Club Heaven used for these purchases. There wasn't that much money in the account, but having the information meant I could make the transfer to the account and pay the woman from the account.

The account was based in the Black Mountain pack. I hadn't heard much about them, but I planned to look into them the first chance I got.

Grace led me to the VIP room that was usually used for these trades and I waited.

To have managed to get five girls in three days meant that Victoria had connections with Midnight's border patrol, customs, and law enforcement. It meant that Mordecai, in some way, was probably getting kickbacks for looking the other way or helping the traffickers carry out their business.

I took note to do something with that information in the future depending on what Renda and Grace could figure out from the archives.

Soon, a knock sounded on the door and I called them in.

Victoria was an old woman to my surprise. She could have been someone's grandmother. Her hair was white and she was slightly hunched over. Greed made her eyes seem brighter as if it was the only thing keeping her alive.

The five girls that trailed behind her in shackles were pale and trembling. None of them seemed older than sixteen, and they all looked on the edge of collapse.

My stomach churned, but I kept a straight face as the door closed.

"Mr. Matt, I'm so glad you called me first for your needs!" Victoria sat on the couch and started to look over the contract as I eyed the line of girls. With a greedy grin, she signed the contract and wrote her payment details on the payment request log. "If you ever need more girls like this, feel free to reach out to me. I'll be sure to give you the best price and quick delivery."

Her voice irritated me and Lucas who wanted to pounce and tear her apart.

They smell sick and wrong, Lucas growled. They're hurt!

Easy, Lucas, I sat back regarding the old woman. We still have a part to play.

"As long as you keep my confidence, I can assure you that you'll have plenty of future contracts from me."

"Of course," she said, pressing a solemn hand to her chest. "The client's privacy is my utmost concern."

"There's just one problem with the girls you bring," I sneered at her. "They're too rebellious. What kind of establishment do you think this is?"

Her cheeks reddened and I saw her doubts go through her mind. Her eyes brightened for a moment and I braced myself for what she was going to say.

"My apologies," Victoria said. "If you'd like, I could inform him to present the girls to you first, so you could choose the best ones from the bunch?"

Who was she talking about? I remembered Grace's words and glared at her.

"First? Are you saying you're selling me used goods?"

She went pale and shook her head, "No. That's not what I meant- I just... well, these girls aren't virgins... Would that be your preference? I'm sure he could arrange that!"

"It would be," I said and eyed her. "Used goods have their place, of course, but I want as much mileage as I can get out of my property. Keep that in mind for whoever your suppliers are that I prefer them fresh."

The words felt disgusting leaving my mouth but she nodded and her eyes lit up as if I had promised her millions of dollars. I focused on memorizing her face and scent so I could identify her at a future time and murder her as soon as she had served her purpose. "I'll call him as soon as I leave! How soon do you think you'll need more?"

"Soon enough," I smirked and pressed down nausea that rose as she looked more excited. "Remember what I said. Keep your mouth shut and you might become a rather wealthy woman."

She nodded and leaped to her feet before leaving.

"Behave yourselves girls," she hissed as she passed the girls.

The girls flinched as she left and walked away with one of the security guards who had remained on staff. The door closed and hell broke loose.

One of the girls broke into tears. Another crouched down in the corner. Another wrapped her arms around the crying girl. The fourth lunged towards the bar, grabbing a bottle and breaking it on the edge of the bar, brandishing the broken bottle at me. The fifth ran towards the faux window as if she planned to throw herself out of the window. Her fragile body thudded against the window helplessly, but it didn't cave.

The window wasn't even real.

"You'll have to kill me!" The girl with the bottle screamed, her eyes were wide with fear as she inched back towards the crying girls.

"Just kill me! Don't touch me!"

It was impressive that at least two of them had some measure of fight in them.

I didn't move from my position on the couch.

I looked at the one with the bottle as the girl near the window began to bang on it and sob, "Please let me out! Let me out! Someone, please!"

I sighed, "Can you tell me where you're from?"

"No!" One of the crying girls shrieked, "They'll kill us! They'll kill us!"

Matt shook his head and crossed the room. The girl near the window drew back and scrambled away from me as I went to the refrigerator. There was a bunch of fruit and other cold foods. I pulled it out and set it on the table. Their eyes narrowed on the platter of fruit as I sat back down. "You've suffered a lot. I didn't purchase you to hurt you further. Do you know who I am?"

They shook their heads.

"My name is Matt Wallber."

The one who had been throwing herself against the window seized in terror. The one with the bottle looked between her and me but didn't lower the battle even as her arms began to tremble.

"I know the reputation of the Warhammer pack, so I know you won't believe me, but I am trying to help," I said.

"Why should we believe you?" The girl with the bottle asked, her lips curled in a feral sneer. "You said... You said you liked them fresh a-and..."

"Someone very important to me was sold to this club by that old woman," I said. "I'm looking to figure out where she came from and who was responsible... Eat. It's not tainted."

Her eyes narrowed. The girl with the bottle stepped forward. Another grabbed her with a frightened breath.

"No, Selena! You remember what happened last time!"

I didn't want to know exactly what happened, but Selena seemed determined or just too hungry to care. I reached for a strawberry and ate it as a show of safety.

"Selena," the girl near the window hissed, "Don't."

Selena didn't lower the bottle as she got just close enough to snatch one of the little platters of food off the table and retreat towards the others.

Realizing my mistake, I shoved the table towards them and dragged a chair towards the door to sit just beside it and sat.

The distance seemed to make them relax. Soon enough, Selena was eating grapes by the handful as if she hadn't eaten in days. The other joined her. I pulled out my phone and sent a message to the assistants to have food and blankets brought to the room on a rolling cart.

A knock sounded on the door. They flinched as I stood to answer it. The man on the other side of the door pushed the cart in and left. I pushed it gently to the other side of the room within their reach.

Each of them took a blanket. The crying one slumped against the wall, curled up beneath the blanket. Selena looked at me with a stubborn set to her jaw.

"Wh-What do you want?"

"Information," I said and considered Renda's words.

Nothing comes for free.

Was that something she'd learned while at Club Heaven or before that? Did these girls believe the same thing?

She looked down at the food and the covered trays of food on the cart. There was soup and sandwiches along with cuts of meat. It looked like they'd just brought whatever was supposed to be served to the clients. "O-Okay."

I let out a breath of relief, "Can you tell me where you're from?"

"I'm from Blue Fire," Selena said.

I frowned, not recognizing the name immediately as I took it down. Two of the other girls were also from Blue Fire. The girl who had thrown herself at the window was from Dune, a pack near the west coast. The hysterical one trembled, curled into the arms of another girl as tears continued to slip down her cheeks.

"And you?" "F-Fluorite."

I remembered that name clearly. Several of the businesses that relied on Fluorite had collapsed when Ben had declared that the pack had fallen to a plague. I remembered visiting once with Joel and my mother when we were very young and being amazed at the fields of flowers and the carts of jewels that came out of the mines.

Ben had incorporated the land into Warhammer's territory, extending the pack farther south and securing its position as the largest and more powerful pack in North America.

How was there a young woman from Fluorite here when everyone had been declared dead from the plague?

Ben was a greedy bastard. I bet that if I looked into the other packs, they had been incorporated into Warhammer or declared victims of natural disasters over the years.

I thought about Renda's attitude towards me. I couldn't be sure which pack she had been a part of, but I bet she was a part of a fallen pack.

That meant her grudge was against Ben, and it would be an uphill battle to gain her trust.

We should just kill him, Lucas growled. Then she would know we have nothing to do with that a*****e.

For once, I agreed.
