Auctioned Mates Revenge -
Chapter 90
Matt's POV
I followed the guard out of the house to where another group was leaning together looking over a laptop. The screen showed drone footage of a large group of vehicles driving across the snowy tundra. They were heavily armed and unmarked for the most part, but
the "What is it?"
"There's a force heading up from the south. They'll be in Skyfall in a matter of minutes," the leader of the group said. "We think they're rogues, but they're a bit too organized for that." "It's Ben," Mordecai said.
I looked at him, narrowing my eyes as he stared out into the distance as if he could see the coming forces.
"You know, every man has a tipping point," Mordecai said. "I think we've found his."
"What do you mean by that?"
"Ben's a sore loser," Mordecai said. "We took Skyfall and Frost Melt from him and he's pissed. He either planned to raid the place so there was nothing left or kill us here."
He smirked as something exploded in the distance and the guards started shouting orders through their radios. The ground shook and fury rose in me. How would he have known we were here? No one else would have had the time or the knowledge to tell him. "What's so funny?"
Mordecai gave me a wolfish grin, "You think he hired new people to do the same dirty work?"
I froze and my heart raced. Lucas growled, low and furious.
The bastards who hurt our mate are here.
My lips curled into a feral grin. It felt vicious and bloodthirsty. Mordecai's grin matched it and for the first time, I was struck by how much I was relishing the idea of tearing someone's throat out. Maybe Mordecai and I had more things in common than I thought. It was an uncomfortable thought, but right now, it didn't matter.
I turned to the nearest guard, "Get Glenda and the others out of here."
"We're trying to secure a route out now," he said. "They've blocked off the route to the airport and roads headed south. It seems like they had some inside information. We've got word that another group was headed towards Frost Pelt, but the Beta team has already headed them off."
Good. I didn't want Emoni, Gordon, and Grayson to have to deal with that. Frost Pelt was a smaller territory, so it was easier to secure.
"Keep in touch with them. When you replace a route out, take it even if we're not back." I turned to Mordecai, "A moment."
He quirked an eyebrow but nodded and followed me away from the house towards the car.
"If you've betrayed me," I said, "I'll replace a way to kill you."
Mordecai laughed, "There is a long list of people I would readily betray, but you aren't on it. Even if you are a little shit."
I narrowed my eyes at him. His eyes twinkled.
"Ben's hold on Skyfall is probably more complicated than just Jay. That Frank guy is probably one of many. Maybe even from the moment we landed someone had passed the information along. Maybe the attack was planned from the moment he was forced to give up Skyfall. Couldn't say, but if I had to guess, Luftmensch or Fireashe is behind the attack. Dennis is the kind of grimy a*****e you'd just toss your shoes after stomping him out, but he always volunteers to do Ben's dirty work."
I had never met the alpha of Luftmensch, Denis, but I knew of him and had enough information on him to know that Mordecai was telling the truth. They were a lackey pack of Warhammer, used to do a lot of the Warhammer dirty work. I wouldn't be surprised if they were connected to a lot of place's downfalls.
His eyes flickered, "He's also the type to be here, so we're in luck."
"Luck?"
"I would have thought you wanted to get your hands on the bastards that snatched your mate from her homeland."
I froze, staring at him wide-eyed. How did he know? He smiled.
"There's not much I couldn't figure out about you these days, Matt. And before you think I had anything to do with it, I learned about it through Uriel who's been keeping an eye on things in the south for several years."
Uriel? I thought she played neutral.
"How long has this been going on?"
"Ben's got more enemies than you think." Mordecai said, "And longer than you've been alive."
"You're only giving me more questions to ask."
Another explosion went off, and I cranked up the car, pulling away from the house.
"I promise to answer all of your questions once we're out of this mess."
"All of them?"
He hesitated and sighed, "All of them."
I nodded.
"Now, do you know how to fire a gun?"
I laughed, "Don't ask stupid questions."
Mordecai shrugged as I drove towards a Warhammer Guard station. Two guards jumped in the back seat. One of them passed a rifle to Mordecai.
"Sir, I still think it would be best for you to be elsewhere."
"Your opinion has been noted," I said and shifted, pressing the gas pedal to the floor. "But I'm the best driver."
Mordecai took aim out the window without question. Bullets flew. I heard them ricocheting off the car as I drove through the ranks and joined the other Warhammer Guard trucks rolling out to meet the group.
There didn't seem to be a lot of them, but there were enough that it wouldn't be over quickly. I don't know how many people Mordecai and guards shot and killed. I don't even know how long I drove, but when the dust seemed to settle and the enemy had started to turn around a deep fear went through me.
"What's wrong?"
I shook my head. I wasn't sure. Then, I felt it again. Terror like I had never known and fury.
It's our mate. She's in danger.
"Son of a bitch!" I threw the car into reverse and spun us around.
I didn't realize that we had gotten so close that I could feel her terror now. I thought that only happened after I marked her.
Maybe in some ways I already had.
A mark does not have to be violent, Lucas said. Hurry.
"What is it?"
"The girls at the house. They're after the girls at the house! Call the team there and get an update."
If something happened to Glenda, if even a hair on her head had been disturbed, I was going to march on the Wallber Estate and burn it to the ground with everyone inside.
"Matt," Mordecai said, "I need you to calm down."
"I can't calm down, she's-"
"Your panic will not help."
I growled at him, feeling my eyes flash as I bared my teeth, "She's in danger!"
Mordecai seemed unfazed, "If you lose control, you won't be able to help her."
I clenched my fists on the steering wheel, hating how right he was. If I shifted right now, we'd probably crash. If not, I damn sure wouldn't be able to shift back with any kind of coherency.
Even if we survived the crash, running on four legs wouldn't get me there nearly as fast as driving.
I had to be as calm as possible.
Damn, I shouldn't have left her there.
How could I not have seen this?
Mordecai leaned out of the window and fired at the driver of the trucks heading towards the house. The windows cracked and shattered. Blood filled the air. The trucks spun and crashed into each other. I cut around the accidents and carried on. Mordecai's aim was scarily good as if he'd been trained by Warhammer Guard.
"I never took you to be a gun kind of man," I said through gritted teeth, trying to stay calm.
"Your mother taught me."
"What?"
He fired again, knocking a gunner off the back of a truck. His head exploded in a shower of blood then he took out the driver of the truck.
"She said shifting had its place, but guns were faster."
I had never imagined my mother saying something like that, or even knowing how to fire a gun, but I knew he wasn't lying. I focused on the road ahead as I could make out the house in the distance. Glenda had better be alright or everyone was going to die.
