Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 117
Chapter 117:.
When I came out of the bathroom, I found Derek sitting behind his desk and reading a document. He looked quite preoccupied.
And since he was busy at the time, I sat back down on the couch.
The office was so quiet it was uncomfortable. Only the sound of him turning pages and writing on the paper could be heard.
“Get me a glass of water,” he said without raising his head.
I stared at him, refusing to move.
Was he ordering me around like I was his secretary?
He looked up at me, possibly because he realized I wasn’t moving.
When our gazes met, I was too cowardly to go against him.
Considering how he had helped me today, the least I could do was to bring him a glass of water.
So, I grabbed a glass, filled it with water and placed it on his desk. Just as I was about to turn around and walk away, he grabbed my wrist and pulled me to him, making me fall backwards and sit on his lap.
As I froze in his arms, I uttered, “Didn’t you say that, if you took the initiative to come see me again, you would be…”
“A loser?” Derek finished the sentence for me.
His hand around me tightened and his furious face flashed a smile. “Yes, I am a loser. And you’re very smart to use my words against me now.”
“Well, I’m not stupid,” I muttered.
Truth be told, when he smiled like that, the atmosphere became less tense.
I sat up, struggling to break free of his grip, but he was holding me too tightly and kept pressing me against his lap.
“You’re not stupid, huh? I think you’re really stupid,” Derek commented.

Then he reached for my phone.
He knew the password to unlock it, so he managed to get it open in seconds. Soon after, he hit his number on the blocked number list.
He noticed me, removed his number from the blocked numbers and changed the contact name to “Dear Husband.”
“If you are ever in trouble, you can always ask your husband for help, haven’t I told you that I will always be your biggest supporter? You have a strong support and yet you refused to use me, doesn’t that make you stupid?”
“I know my place well,” I replied.
The moment I said that, his face turned grim. “Say that again,” he replied.
Despite his menacing look, I didn’t flinch. “Did I say something wrong? Tell me, what’s true and what’s a lie, then? I feel like you’ve been deceiving me all this time.”
The next moment, our faces came so close that my nose almost touched his.
I was so nervous that I instinctively turned my head away. But he held my waist, refusing to give me a chance to pull back.
I thought he would kiss me, but he did not. He just stared into my eyes, gritting his teeth angrily.
But when he spoke, his voice was calm. Somehow, it sounded to me like he was suppressing his anger.
“All you do is complain. Put yourself in my place and think it through, don’t I have any complaints? That scum approached you on purpose and you fell for it. Are you an idiot? Hadn’t he hurt you enough? How could you go with that jerk to his hometown? Remember, you’ve already divorced him and I’m your husband now.”
Why did he sound like he was jealous?
He just bought me Shane, didn’t he? A lot of questions popped into my mind.
While I was in my thoughts, he suddenly bit my lip and kissed me.
But it soon ended when he heard his phone ring.
He seemed annoyed that someone was interrupting us by calling him.
However, he answered the call and pressed the speaker button. “Speak,” he ordered.
The person on the other end of the line seemed to sense Derek’s displeasure and spoke cautiously.
“Mr. Sullivan, the police are coming.
The police? Why did he call them?
“Send them in,” Derek said.
I quickly got up from his lap. This time, he didn’t stop me. He merely tidied up his clothes.
After a set of hurried footsteps outside, the door soon opened. Derek’s assistant walked in along with two policemen.
Derek stood up, shook their hands and sat down across from them.
“Mr. Sullivan, we have received your report about the slanderous comments and attack on your wife on the Internet. We have already conducted our investigation. The IP address of the attacker was located at a remote, unattended private Internet cafe. This has caused difficulty on our part in determining the suspect. We are here to ask you and your wife some questions that might help us close this case sooner.”
As I sat on the couch, I listened intently to their conversation.
I really wanted to know who hated me enough to slander me like this.
“Actually, there’s something very important I have to say,” Derek told the police with a smile, crossing his fingers.
I stared at him, waiting for that very important information he mentioned.
Suddenly, his phone rang again. He looked at it and his face went grim again.
“Hold on, I have to take this,” he said to the cops before answering the call.
He said nothing. He just listened to the caller.
He had no idea what the person on the other end of the line was saying, but with each passing second, Derek sounded more and more sullen .
