Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 144
Chapter 144:
I had no idea when their encounter would end. Being on my feet the whole time was making me uncomfortable, so I decided to go back to Derek’s office to wait.
The assistant was still making calls, coming and going from time to time. I had never seen such a hectic situation.
When the assistant hung up the phone, I asked him, “You seem very busy today.”
He smiled at me and replied, “Well, tomorrow is the anniversary of Dere International. There are a lot of things to organize. I just talked to the hotel staff about the necessary arrangements.” It looked like the anniversary party was going to be great.
I nodded and walked into the office. There, I saw a beautiful box packed on the couch. Out of curiosity, I opened it. Inside was a beautiful black evening gown. It was my size. Was Derek going to take me to the anniversary party?
Before the meeting was over, I got a call from Tina.
Over the phone, she told me that the nanny had asked for a day off, saying that the nanny had something to do at home today, and that the child had suddenly fallen ill.
As I could not neglect the child’s health, I did not delay any longer. I said goodbye to Derek’s assistant and left.
It turned out that the baby vomited milk due to repletion, but Tina was too young and inexperienced to understand what was happening, so she panicked when she saw her baby vomiting milk.
Although I had no previous childcare experience, I had read a lot of parenting books when I was pregnant, so I had some knowledge about it.
I told her that it was normal for babies to spit up milk. Then, I explained in broad strokes how she could stop her baby from doing it.
After I stayed at Tina’s house for a while, Derek called me. He asked me where I was and said he would come pick me up when I told him about the situation.
On the way home, he didn’t mention anything about the anniversary party, nor did he take the dress home.
I consoled myself with the thought that maybe he was too busy to remember about it, and that maybe he would tomorrow.
But he didn’t. The next day, I was waiting for his call, but he didn’t call even when the sun went down.

I was sitting in the living room and didn’t even turn on the TV. I was very worried at that time.
Seeing that I seemed to be bored, Aaron told me he would take me out for a walk.
As we passed by the Glamor Hotel, where the Dere International party was being held, I was instantly drawn to the sight of it.
There were a lot of people entering the hotel.
Just before the car could pass, I saw a familiar car parked in front of the hotel in the distance. And when I saw the person getting out of the car, I was stunned. “Stop!” I shouted anxiously.
At the sound of my voice, Aaron pulled over to the side of the road.
Unlike her usual work clothes, Charlene was now wearing a tight-fitting evening dress, and it showed just how sexy she was. She wasn’t even wearing her hair up, and her long wavy hair was down, which made her look even more charming.
But that wasn’t my point.
I was surprised that her dress was the one I saw in Derek’s office.
It turned out I had waited too long. The dress wasn’t for me.
She wore her hair pulled back behind her ears and walked gracefully with a purse in her hand.
Obviously, the dress was perfect for her. If I were in her shoes, I wouldn’t look half as good as she did in that dress.
I felt so silly that I even thought the dress was for me.
I was disappointed and jealous.
At that moment, a Maybach pulled up to the hotel entrance. The person who got out of the car looked very familiar.
He was still wearing his trademark white shirt and suit pants, with no other accessories.
But even so, his mere arrival caught everyone’s attention in a split second.
Derek entered the hotel with one hand in his pocket and the other waving to the guests who greeted him. He seemed to be in good spirits.
“Today is the sixth anniversary of Dere International. You know it wasn’t easy for Derek to turn the company into a major player in the international market in a span of a few years. He didn’t accumulate all those achievements by sheer luck. You are lucky to have met Derek now that he is successful.” Aaron’s voice reached my ears.
He probably noticed the disappointment in my eyes.
Finally, I looked away from the hotel and flashed him a smile.
“Really? I disagree. It would have been better if we had shared the sorrows and joys together, if I had witnessed your growth,” he replied.
“Do you want to come in? Let’s go see how great the Dere International anniversary party is. If you don’t want Derek to see you, we’ll have to sneak in.” To my surprise, Aaron could read me like an open book.
I wanted to leave and wallow in my sadness, but when he said that, I decided to go inside and see what was going on.
