Chapter 146:.

I lay on the lounger Derek used to lie on, straining to gulp down two cans of beer. Suddenly, the bedroom door opened.

He met me on the balcony, looked at the two cans of beer on the floor and frowned.

“Why are you still up?”

I glanced at him, smiling weakly. “I can’t sleep-don’t you have an event today, why did you come home?”

The sarcasm in my tone was very obvious, and I thought he sensed it.

He didn’t seem surprised that I knew about the event. He sat on my lap, numbing my legs.

Then, he lifted my chin, intending to kiss me. “I came home to join you,” he said in a husky voice.

We both reeked of alcohol. Mine was beer and his was red wine. It was easy to distinguish the smells.

In addition to the smell of wine, a very strong perfume smell was wafting from his body.

Feeling annoyed, I turned my head to avoid his kiss.

Since he couldn’t tell what was wrong with me, he pinched my chin again, grinning like a ruffian.

“What’s the matter, my love? I’ve come home to keep you company – doesn’t that make you happy?”

Then, he leaned in, intending to kiss me again. This time, I pushed him away immediately.

He probably didn’t expect me to use so much force, so he fell backwards and grabbed the railing in time to keep from falling.

The truth is that when he fell backwards, I was very startled, but I tried not to show any emotion.

I lifted him off my legs and jumped to my feet.

He grabbed my arm, but I struggled to free myself. The grief and anger in my heart made me flail my arms more violently.

When my hand brushed his face, he released me and touched his cheek. Her eyes immediately bugged out.

“Eveline, are you crazy?” he said, sounding frustrated. I could feel my hands shaking.

That’s when I remembered that I had a tin ring on my finger and that I had accidentally scratched his face.

However, I had no intention of apologizing. Instead, I said something vicious.

“Yes, I’m crazy, so don’t provoke me! Keep having fun, why did you come home?”

In fact, when I saw her face bleeding, I could feel my heart bleeding too. But

I didn’t want to lower my pride and tend to his wound at this moment.

He looked at me for a moment, but it was soon replaced by an ambiguous smile.

“Fine, I’ll leave right now. I haven’t had enough fun tonight, anyway. But you don’t look so lonely, do you?”.

What did he mean by that?

Without offering the slightest explanation, he turned and stormed off. Soon enough, the door slammed shut. I slumped down on the lounger, heard him start the car and drive away. My heart broke into pieces as I listened to him.

He sounded really angry. I wondered where he was going, was he going to meet Charlene?

Gosh, I was so stupid, why did I have to infuriate him like that, it was like I had pushed him into someone else’s arms!

For the next two days, Derek didn’t come home, nor did he call me.

This time, he had no heart.

Aaron must have thought we’d had a fight. He looked like he wanted to say something, but in the end decided not to.

During the second night of Derek’s absence, a thunderstorm rolled in.

I remembered the night he told me he wouldn’t be able to come home. It was also a stormy night, and he ended up coming home that night, soaking wet and slightly shivering from the cold.

He told me he knew he should be afraid of thunder.

Tonight was a rainy night. This time, he didn’t come home. He didn’t even call or text me.

Every once in a while lightning would appear outside. I cowered under the covers, scared. But as scared as I was, my sadness was even worse.

After a while, I heard a knock at the door.

I went to open it, only to replace Aaron standing in the doorway. “If you’re afraid of thunder, come out and let’s talk so you don’t think about the storm,” he told me.

I nodded to him and sat with him in the living room.

Aaron told me stories of interesting experiences he had had abroad. I could tell he was trying to improve my mood, but I didn’t respond to him much. For one thing, I didn’t know much about living abroad, and for another, I wasn’t in the mood to think about such things.

Suddenly, I received a text message. Pleasantly surprised, I quickly picked up the phone.

At that moment, I finally realized that, although Derek had saddened and disappointed me, I was still looking forward to hearing from him.

However, the message was sent by an unknown number.

Before I opened the message, a sinister hunch arose in my heart.

The moment I saw the two photos attached to the message, my heart broke into pieces.

In the first photo, Charlene was helping Derek into the hotel. And in the second, they were walking into a room together.

He looked drunk in the pictures.

And anything could happen when he was drunk. If something really happened between them, it would all be over.

What I had feared the most had finally come true.

Right now, it felt like my heart was being ripped apart by a sharp knife.

“Is everything okay?” asked Aaron.

He must have sensed something was wrong from my expression.

“Nothing.” My voice was as soft as the wind, and I knew my face was deathly pale.
