Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 168
Chapter 168:
I finally realized how stupid I had been.
“Ma’am, you have to pay for the consultation. Our great doctor’s prescriptions are not free. You know it takes a lot of energy and knowledge.”
It was one of the women who spoke, and the others in line nodded immediately. Clearly these people were already brainwashed beyond hope. They were blindly following this quack doctor as if she were a cult.
The middle-aged woman who had brought me to this place took me by the arm. Her voice was gentle and persuasive, as if she had only my best interests at heart.
“Ma’am, the most important thing right now is to get you pregnant, isn’t it? Compared to the blessing that awaits you, this consultation should be nothing. Believe me, this medicine really works. The story I told you about my friend is true. She can vouch for the doctor’s skill. I knew it would do me no good to refuse them now.
For the moment, I had to give in and act as if I believed their nonsense.
I gave a little laugh. “Well, I didn’t run away for the fee. I was just a little afraid to take the medicine. It looks dark and awful, I didn’t think I was going to be able to take it.”
The woman leaned closer and began whispering in a conspiratorial tone, “You don’t understand. This is actually a magic potion. But don’t worry, the doctor doesn’t give it to just anyone. She only prescribes them to those whose fate she has already seen. If she said that your illness can be cured, then you should be able to get pregnant as soon as you take this medicine. I tell you that if I were to shake my head and tell you there is no hope, no doctor in the world could help you.”
Ah, so now the renowned doctor had become some sort of potions master. If she had told me all this nonsense before, I would have rejected her immediately.
I nodded my head and pretended to understand. “I see, I see. All right, I’ll drink it. Whatever happens, I want to get pregnant.” My apparent acquiescence caused them to relax, and the quack doctor resumed her ‘consultation’ with the next patient.
I picked up the bowl of medicine and moved to the side, still dreading the thought of drinking its disgusting contents. No way was I going to let it touch my lips.
Still, I tilted the bowl to make it look like I was drinking the liquid, but my eyes twitched with urgency. I waited for the two men at the door to let their guard down. When they did, I threw the bowl toward them and ran away.
I ran as fast as I could, especially when I heard footsteps behind me. I lunged forward and plucked up a handful of pebbles without interrupting my run, throwing them at my pursuers. When I reached the main road, I spotted the car that had brought me here. It was still parked where we had left it.
The driver saw me and I heard the engine revving. It looked like he was planning to block me in with the car.

At that moment, I saw another vehicle coming at full speed in our direction. Its headlights were blinding, but I rushed towards it without a second thought.
The second car screeched to a halt right next to me, I quickly opened the door and jumped into the passenger seat.
By the time my pursuers reached the highway, we had sped away. I pressed a hand to my chest and tried to calm my breathing. Under my palm, I could feel my heart pounding.
It took a while, but I finally turned to look at the handsome man behind the wheel. “What were you doing in such a remote place, Eveline?” Aaron raised his eyebrows and gave me a helpless expression.
I could only shrug. “I didn’t really have anything to defend myself with. I was just being stupid, that’s all.”
Aaron smiled and shook his head. “Well, at least you were smart enough to send me a message in advance.” He was right.
I’d already been on my guard the moment the woman had put me in her husband’s car. Derek was away on business, so for now I was only counting on Aaron. Luckily, I still had enough judgment to share my location with him earlier.
I was twenty-six years old, for heaven’s sake! I shouldn’t have been fooled so easily. And yet, I was. Was it because I wanted a baby so badly that I discarded all common sense? In fact, when one’s ultimate desire was at stake, it wasn’t hard to win him over with even the simplest of tactics. I couldn’t believe I had been on the verge of falling for that scam! I was very lucky that Aaron hadn’t arrived later.
I had recognized his car at first glance, so I jumped in without hesitation. I took a deep breath and smacked my face repeatedly.
Aaron quickly grabbed my hand to stop me. “Alright, stop blaming yourself already,” he sneered. “Everyone has a right to be a jerk once in a while.”
I wasn’t sure if, it was a good thing or not, but he refrained from asking exactly what had happened to me.
