Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 173
Chapter 173:.
I looked up and saw that Aaron, who had been sitting directly across from me, had suddenly stood up. He took off his suit jacket and draped it over Charlene’s shoulders to cover her dress, which had become almost see-through as it had become wet with alcohol.
Edward slowly set down his glass and smiled thoughtfully. “Miss Eason is looking rather young. I didn’t expect her to have a boyfriend already,” he said.
He imagined that Charlene was probably repulsed to the core by that beast in human form, but he tried to keep the smile on his face nonetheless.
“Excuse me, I need to go to the bathroom,” Charlene said.
To give the impression of a real couple, Aaron accompanied Charlene to the bathroom. He killed two birds with one stone, as he managed to save Charlene and also lent Derek and I some help.
After they left, the atmosphere at the table had obviously changed. It had been warm before, but now it was noticeably cooler. It seemed to me that the dinner was quite convoluted.
By the time Charlene returned, she had managed to adjust the state she was in for the better, ignored the wet spots on her dress and had Aaron’s suit jacket still slung over her shoulders.
She picked up her glass with a confident smile. “Mr. Jackson, I must admit I felt a little uncomfortable just now. I’ll punish myself by drinking three glasses of alcohol to apologize to you,” he said.
He poured the drink repeatedly until he finished three consecutive glasses. It was a very strong drink. Drinking three glasses of this alcohol in one continuous gulp would make his throat burn.
Edward leaned against the back of the chair and watched her appreciatively as she gulped down the alcohol, smiling with some degree of satisfaction.
Charlene set the glass down, wiped the excess liquid from her lips with the back of her hand, and asked again about Lean’s case.
Edward stood up and rested his hands on the table to steady himself. His face was flushed with drunkenness, but I could see that his demeanor was back to his usual serious self.
“We’re just having a meeting with Mr. Sullivan. We won’t be talking business. No matter what kind of case it is, of course we will be fair. It will all depend on the evidence that is presented.” After making that rather open statement, he left with his companions.
Dinner had come to an end, but there was still nothing definite about Lean’s case. Charlene had had some wine earlier and also drank those three glasses of alcohol afterwards. There was no way she wouldn’t get drunk after that.
When she left, Aaron was the one who supported her. We couldn’t send her home when she was in such a drunken state, so we had no choice but to take her back to the villa with us.

She had not lost consciousness, which was a saving grace. When Aaron helped her lie down on the bed in the guest room, he didn’t forget to thank her. Derek and Aaron came out of the guest room. Only then did I take off her shoes and cover her with a blanket.
She patted her head and mumbled that her head hurt. I put my hand under the blankets and comforted her in a low, soothing voice: “If your head hurts, sleep well. I’ll make you some tea to sober you up later.”
When I left the guest room, the whole villa was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Derek and Aaron had also had a lot to drink tonight and I assumed they would have fallen asleep as well. So I went downstairs to prepare the tea that would help sober a person up.
The water in the kettle was bubbling. I stood by the kettle and remembered everything that had happened tonight Was it possible that we could have made things worse tonight?
But Derek had done his best. While Lean was being held in jail, I had no idea that so many people were working so hard for him.
After making the tea, I let it cool for a while and didn’t bring it up until the temperature dropped to a suitable level.
When I reached the door to the guest room, I heard someone talking inside. I slowed my steps unconsciously. “Mom, in your eyes, you never see me as important as Lean. I know that. But please don’t be so direct. I’m a human being and it’s natural for me to feel sad.” Because Charlene was drunk, she had a hard time speaking properly and sounded like she was having a nervous breakdown.
“Yes, my future is not as important as Lean’s. Do you need me to get laid tonight? Mom, you had left me to my own devices for so many years. You brought me back just to take advantage of me? Just to get me to sleep with someone when you need me to? Lean did something wrong. I’ve tried my best. We’re both your children, why are you treating me like this?” As he spoke, his voice grew louder and louder and shriller.
I stood at the door for a long time. I didn’t open the door or go in until she stopped crying, which was quite some time after she hung up the phone. –
