Chapter 280:

The next day, I noticed that Aaron had no intention of leaving the house.

“Aren’t you going to work?” I asked him.

Aaron was helping James clean the yard with a broom. Hearing my question, he paused to give me a look and smiled.

“I’m taking a few days off. People aren’t machines, Eve, and I need time to readjust. It will be a good opportunity to rest.”

Since I had nothing better to do, I pulled out my exam material. James and Aaron were doctors, so I figured I could ask them some questions I didn’t understand.

Some were saying that people today would die without their smartphones. I had been experimenting with this theory for a while, and found that even without a smartphone, people would not die.

I just focused all my energy on studying every day. And when I got tired of that, I would grow some flowers next to James and listen to him talk about floriculture.

At other times, I would watch him and Aaron play chess. To tell you the truth, I liked this routine. Without the Internet, I could spend more time doing things with people. My life moved at a slower pace and was much simpler than before.

I could tell that James loved Aaron very much, but he treated Derek very differently. There were times when he could be quite hard on Derek. It was normal for the older ones to prefer obedient children. Aaron was gentle and kind-hearted. Perhaps the reason James loved Aaron the most was because Aaron followed in James’ footsteps to become an excellent doctor.

If that wasn’t enough, Aaron managed to make great strides in the medical field. So it was no wonder James was very proud of him. Derek, on the other hand, must have been an unruly child when he was younger. As smart and gifted as he was, I was sure he must have been a pain in the ass.

During my fifth day at Qinben, I opened my eyes to a beautiful morning. The first thing I saw was a vast expanse of snowy land, right outside the window.

Oh, how I loved snowy days! Although I saw snow every winter, the first snowfall each year was the most exciting of all.

Both Aaron and I took James’ suggestion to eat a hot pot and enjoy the nice weather. During the winter, hot pots were the best choice of food. We would sweat and feel warm while eating them.

Aaron and I planned to buy some ingredients, but it was difficult to go out during the snowy days. James told us he would call someone to bring us the food later.

While Aaron prepared the soup base, I washed the vegetables. When I was almost done, I heard someone knocking on the door.

At that moment, James was sitting in a chair, listening to the radio. He told me that it was probably the delivery man who would bring us the ingredients and told me to open the door.

The moment I opened the door, I was shocked. The delivery man was here and he was very handsome. It turned out that the delivery guy was Derek, and he was carrying several heavy bags.

Our gazes met and we were both pinned to the spot…. After a moment of surprise, I managed to compose myself. I guessed it was Aaron or James who sold me out.

The truth was that I missed how I was feeling now. When I left home, I was so angry I wanted to explode.

But now that a few days had passed, my anger had dissipated.

Now that I was taking a look at Derek’s face, I realized that I really missed him. I lowered my head to hide my emotions, and picked up the bags.

“Thank you for delivering them. You may leave now.” I set the bags down and tried to close the door, but Derek used his arms to stop me from closing it.

Annoyed, I glared at him, but he merely returned my gaze with a smirk on his face.

“It’s freezing outside, do you really have the nerve to lock me out of here?” The sound of Derek’s voice made it sound like he was pleading.

“It’s not so easy to deliver food on a snowy day. Let him in, Eveline, so he can warm up a bit,” James said.

When I turned around, I found the old man still sitting in the cane chair with a radio in his arms. Then he took one look at Derek’s expression and took pleasure in his misfortune.

It was as if the old man was saying “Karma’s real, kid!”.

Since James was the one who said it, he had no right to shut his grandson out. So, I loosened my grip and set about picking up the bags. However, Derek grabbed them before I could.

“They’re heavy. Let me do it.”

. . . Since he offered to help me, I didn’t turn him down. I turned around and went back to the kitchen. After greeting his grandfather, Derek carried the groceries into the kitchen.
