Chapter 31:

Vivien was still fussing, while Shane was very red in the face and couldn’t even straighten up.

Meanwhile, Derek gently placed me on the couch. Shane shot me a look. That’s when that look reminded me of my purpose for being here.

A strong desire for revenge welled up in my heart again. Without hesitation, I wrapped my arms around Derek’s neck and kissed him passionately. The contact of our lips stunned him and his body visibly stiffened.

At that point, I no longer knew what kind of reaction Shane had. I only heard Vi cursing at him continuously.

“What the hell are you giving, get the hell out of here!” roared Derek’s friend.

Then the private room went silent in an instant.

I thought I already had an unspoken agreement with Derek that we were just acting. Just like in the bar when I played along with his pretense, he was now cooperating with me seamlessly without a single second of rehearsal beforehand.

But when the door closed, he suddenly kissed me back. His kiss was so passionate that I couldn’t resist. I could feel the fire of his desire through his clothes, and the stiffness in his crotch.

“Derek, don’t…don’t do this!” I tried to push him away with all my might.

Finally, he stopped. He was catching his breath, looking into my eyes with a sly calmness.

“What’s the matter, are you scared? Eveline, you were the one who flirted with me first. It’s not like men can’t resist that temptation. Once we start something that hot, it’s not so easy to stop.”

“I wasn’t flirting with you, I just…”

I wondered what I should say to her. I just wanted to show him a show, but I guess it was wrong not to tell him and not have his permission.

“I see. You just wanted him to see us kissing, is that it?” said Derek casually.

It was clear that he had realized my true purpose. But why did he seem upset about it? Was it because I used him?

“Look, Derek, I’m sorry. I made a mistake,” I muttered.

Derek laughed at me. He sat down and lit a cigarette.

“Now you know you’ve made a mistake? Tell me, Eveline, why are you here?”

I sat upright too, ran my hands haphazardly down my dress and lowered my head. I was like a child who had done something wrong. “I agreed to divorce him tomorrow. But because of his betrayal, I couldn’t let him go so easily. I thought it would be fair for me to cheat on him before we divorced.”

Derek nearly choked on the puff of the cigarette he had just taken. Then he coughed violently as he gave me another look.

“You really are unbelievable, Eveline – how did you come up with such a method of revenge?”

I wasn’t sure if she was making fun of me. To tell the truth, I never imagined I would be here before I carried out this plan.

I lowered my head, showing my embarrassment as I whispered, “Even a rabbit will bite an enemy that angers it. Why wouldn’t I retaliate? I’m not an idiot.”

Derek blew out a big puff of smoke and then gave me a look through the smoke.

“Then you shouldn’t have been so soft on him at the card table that day,” he commented.

“That was different,” I retorted.

“Oh yeah, how was that different from now?” Derek gave me a look in my eyes as he held the cigarette between his fingers.

“I wasn’t being soft on him. I just felt bad for his parents,” I replied.

The ash from his cigarette blew smoke through his fingers. That’s when I saw how serious Derek was at that moment.

“Eveline, that kindness has no place in this world. When that kindness of yours brings you nothing but pain, you will soon realize that you have no kind heart; you’re just stupid.”

Her words contradicted her own actions. If the world had no place for kindness, then why was he treating me so well?

“In that case, why have you been so nice to me?”

I could tell by Derek’s reaction that he hadn’t anticipated what I said. He didn’t answer my question, but a faint smile appeared on his lips.

“You know that, in his mind, you’ve already cheated on him and your goal has already been accomplished.”

This time, I had no idea what he meant. Maybe he was referring to how he deliberately acted intimate with me in front of Shane at the bar that day. Naturally, Shane didn’t believe I was innocent. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have said those words just now.

“By the way, how did you show up here? I don’t think it’s just a coincidence,” I asked.

Derek flicked the ashes of his cigarette into the ashtray and laughed. “The other guy is my friend, and the owner of this bar. He proposed a toast to you at the Blue Sky the other day. Eveline, your memory is getting rusty. You forget a lot of things very easily.”

Just then, I remembered that I had indeed seen the man in the jacket before.

That’s why he looked familiar.

Derek picked up the phone and tapped the screen. Then the music came through the big screen in the private room.

“If you want to do something wild, do it.”

That said, he leaned back on the couch. The top two buttons of his shirt had been undone, exposing his muscular pecs. It was easy to tell he had a nice body.

That night, I sang so much that my voice became hoarse. When midnight came, he took me back to the alley and left right away.

As soon as I got home, I got a message from Seagull.

“Eve, I hope you become the person you want to be. Don’t make things difficult for yourself. Don’t let your time on this earth be fruitless.”
