Chapter 322:

When Derek and I left, the students were still playing in the classroom. It all felt familiar and brought back many memories. As we were walking through the schoolyard, we passed a snow-covered banyan tree.

I suddenly slowed down and stopped under the banyan tree. I took a walk around the campus. The only room that was lit was the classroom Kevin and his students were in. The rest of the school was in pitch darkness.

When I turned to Derek, I felt that he was far away from me because of the snow. I sighed deeply. “Derek, who are you really? Why do I get the feeling that you are miles away from me and yet you are here, right in front of me? Why do I always get the feeling that we are not meant to be together? Even God seems to be against our relationship, why?”

Derek smiled softly and gently tapped my forehead.

“You’re thinking too much,” he said, smiling. Then he put his hands on my waist and slowly lowered his face to mine.

Our faces were now very close to each other, to the point where I could feel his warm breath on my skin. I stared into her big, deep eyes.

“Listen to me, Eveline, this handsome man in front of you right now is your husband. He is yours and no one else’s. No one decides our fate for us. If our relationship is so upsetting, the world can make it snow even more. I don’t care.” He spoke so firmly and at the same time with such childlike candor that I was naturally moved.

After saying that, Derek pressed his lips to mine and pulled me into a passionate kiss that lasted quite a while. When he finally released my lips, he gently stroked my hair.

“Now stop twirling it around, OK?” I merely smiled, as I arranged my hair which was a bit messy.

The anguish I felt a while ago was gone. It was replaced by a deep sense of well-being. We were about to leave when suddenly it started to snow heavily. I was speechless as I remembered what Derek had said earlier.

“Look, the world is really determined to show its disapproval of our relationship,” I said to Derek as I pointed to the sky.

Derek draped his arm around my shoulders reassuringly. “I already told you I don’t care. Let him bury me in the snow if he can.” Hearing what he said, I panicked and rushed to cover his mouth.

“Don’t say such things,” I said earnestly.

He didn’t move and gave me a look with a smile on his face.

“Well, I’m pretty sure he can’t hear me,” Derek said through my fingers. I finally removed my hand from his mouth and we walked slowly hand in hand. “You know, when my dad was in that car accident, I was really shocked by the neighbors’ reaction. They said that the fact that the branch of a tree in the alley had suddenly broken the day before was a harbinger of this misfortune. Some of our neighbors said they had heard sobbing and wailing the night before, which was confirmed by others. I know it is a bit ridiculous to believe these things, but at the time I was very remorseful. I blamed myself for being so stupid that I failed to see the signs the world was showing me. If I had paid more attention to the signs, I surely would not have let my father leave that day. Maybe then I would have avoided this misfortune.”

At that moment, Derek suddenly stopped and turned to me. I looked at him curiously. He stared at me for a while.

Then, suddenly, he pulled me into a warm embrace. When he spoke, his voice was husky. “Don’t let the past haunt you and steal your happiness, OK?” I replied in a barely audible whisper.

I was more concerned with enjoying that warm, comforting embrace. By now, it was snowing so hard that only the sound of the wind and falling snow could be heard. After the weekend, I went to Lavinia’s beauty salon on Monday.

Her beauty salon was not open to the public. It was for talent training only. Most of the makeup artists who trained here were now working as professional celebrity makeup artists.

I thought it would be good for me to combine my knowledge of traditional medicine with great makeup skills. With that knowledge, I could perfectly meet the needs of modern women.

When I arrived at the salon, I was greeted by Lavinia herself, who led me inside. Her team was very dynamic. Everyone seemed perfectly at ease in their task. They were all full of passion and energy.

Watching them work with such grace, I felt a little ashamed of my image and morals. I felt inferior to them.

Lavinia guessed what was going through my head at that moment because she stared at me and said with a smile, “It’s important for a makeup artist to give their best at all times. That’s the showcase of their work and that’s what gives the client confidence.” I blushed as I lowered my head.

“You’re right, indeed,” I said quietly.

Lavinia smiled and said kindly, “Eveline, don’t be nervous. I’m sure you will encounter many problems in life and you must learn to face them calmly. I don’t think there is anything wrong with the way you dress and make-up. However, you can make one or two changes to give a better appearance.”
