Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 343
Chapter 343:.
Derek put down the ice pack, leaned back on the couch and pulled out a cigarette. However, he didn’t light it right away.
He stared at the cigarette for a long while and said, “I bet Dere International on that bet, but I didn’t do it for Becky. If it had been someone else, I would have done the same thing. I did it because that video could ruin a person’s life if exposed to the public. Besides, it was a bet I was sure to win.” I believed his every word.
He would not stand by and watch someone suffer, because he was not a heartless person. For example, the first time we met, he could have ignored me and gone about his day. Instead, he helped me, because he was a loving and caring man.
After lighting his cigarette, he continued, “I wanted to destroy that usb drive as soon as I got it, but I hesitated, because I was afraid that someday you would ask me about it. I wouldn’t tell you about it unless you specifically asked me for an explanation. And I knew you wouldn’t like to hear the answer.” Derek was right.
Even though she understood the situation now, she was still despondent.
“You told me that you dropped the usb drive in the sink that night. Naturally, I didn’t want you to blame yourself, so I told you it didn’t matter. Later, I tried to retrieve it, because I didn’t want someone else to get it and use it to destroy Becky’s life. Unfortunately, I couldn’t replace it. I thought it had fallen down the drain, and then I thought there was nothing to worry about anymore.” He explained in great detail, leaving no room for doubt.
Gently, she drew circles on my palm with her fingers.
“Do you believe me, Eveline?”
I looked at him silently for a good while.
“It’s not that I don’t believe you, Derek. It’s that you don’t have enough faith in me. You don’t trust me enough to think I can handle all this.”
As she tilted her head, the soft light accentuated her chiseled facial features.
“Honey, do you know why I feel uneasy or scared or worried?” he asked as his eyes lit up like flames.
“Because I care,” she said, answering her own question. When I heard that, my heart suddenly skipped a beat.

He moved closer to me and pressed me down on the couch. Then, he started kissing me. The kiss was so passionate that I felt my lips go numb.
After a while, he finally stopped to catch his breath and then looked into my eyes.
“If you want to be a hero again next time, be sure to take me with you. We’re a couple, remember? We have to work things out together, do you understand? You scared me half to death.” I was touched by her sweet words.
Happiness flooded my heart, despite everything that had happened.
“I wanted to tell you, but it happened so fast I didn’t get a chance to,” I whispered.
Derek brushed his thumb across my lips. Soon after, his gaze landed on my lips. The smile on his face was indescribably tantalizing. It was a devilishly attractive smile that was more than enough to intoxicate me.
“My wife has an extremely kind heart.”
When I heard what he said, tears welled up in my eyes. I suddenly realized what her smile meant. It was a smile that conveyed how happy she was.
Since the kidnapping, I hadn’t heard from Becky. Every day, Derek came home on time, but he never spoke to me about her. I had no idea if he met with her privately or if he even tried to comfort her. It was clear to me that this tragic event must have reopened Becky’s old wounds and was a big blow to her ego. It was only logical that she needed some time to calm down.
Coincidentally, I ran into her on the street a few days later. I heard from Charlene that Tina had found a job as a cleaner at a daycare center.
The director took pity on her and promised her that she could take her son to work as long as she could finish her chores on time. I was overjoyed at the news.
Although the job was not lucrative, it meant that at least she was fighting fate with her own efforts. Tina had no man to rely on, nor did she want to. She was on her own now.
No matter what kind of work it was, as long as she could integrate into society, she would slowly learn and mature. She was only eighteen years old. Even if she had to raise her child alone, she still had plenty of time left to develop her full potential. Charlene and I visited her one day.
Kindergarten was already on vacation, but there were still some children in the custodial class, so Tina didn’t have much work to do. Tina’s daughter Lily was only a few months old. It was good that she got a job so soon.
As soon as I saw her, I noticed that she looked much better than before. Maybe it was because getting this job brought hope back into her heart.
