Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 369
Chapter 369:
The situation was precarious. Not only did I not know what to do next, but I was also scared. Just then my phone rang.
Tina must have been looking for us as we left the grocery store and called me.
Shane smiled wickedly as I pulled out the phone.
“Do you want to call the police? I’m not afraid, nor do I have anything to lose. Your baby will die with me if I die. I’ve lived many years, but your life would be cut short. So you’d better think twice before you do something stupid.”
I quickly explained, “No, no, it’s not my baby. It’s his mother calling.”
I answered the phone while staring at Shane out of fear that I would hurt the baby. In a shaky tone, I told Tina where I was at that moment.
While I was on the catwalk, Tina came running up with a shopping bag in her hand shortly after.
When she reached us, I told my ex-husband, “Shane, she’s the baby’s mother. I don’t have children. If you hold a grudge against me, you should get even. The baby is innocent. Please let her go.”
My words were more than enough for Tina to put two and two together. The bag in her hand fell to the ground as she realized her baby was in grave danger.
She dropped to her knees and began to plead with Shane.
“Please, please let go of my baby. Don’t hurt him. Please.”
Even though I knew it was a trap, I had no choice but to fall into it.
Lily’s crying was breaking my heart and I couldn’t bear to put her in danger for another second. All I wanted now was to return her to Tina’s arms immediately. She needed to suckle at her mother’s breasts and be comforted.
Intending to bear the brunt of it, I walked toward the center of the catwalk slowly.
This walkway was not in use, so it was covered with piles of snow. My shoes sank into the snow as I walked forward.
“Eveline!” A familiar voice was heard from behind me.

I turned and saw Derek walking toward the walkway.
He was wearing a mid-length coat, with the buttons undone. Smoke from the cigarette in his hand floated in the cold wind. Calm and unhurried, he made his way toward us slowly and steadily.
“Derek!”
I ran back and grabbed his arm as if he were my knight in shining armor.
“Derek, he’s got Lily! We have to save her now!”
Derek patted me on the back and said, “Don’t worry. I’ll save her.” He then looked at Shane calmly.
Shane burst out in mocking laughter when he saw Derek and heard his words of reassurance. His eyes burned and his face grew crueler.
“You’ve got a lot of nerve! Good. You want the baby, don’t you?”
With one hand, he grabbed the clothes off Lily’s back and pulled her away from the catwalk. The poor baby was left dangling in mid-air.
“Ah!” Tina screamed at the top of her lungs.
The spectators under the catwalk echoed the scream. My heart leapt into my throat.
“Shane, don’t do anything stupid. Think about the consequences. If you do this, you’ll be sent to jail for life.”
“Jail? Jail for life?” Shane grimaced and added, “What’s wrong with spending the rest of my life in jail? Do you have any idea how I’ve lived for the past few months? My life couldn’t get any worse. I’d rather go to jail than live a life like this.”
Despite Shane’s challenge, Derek’s face remained as calm as ever.
“Shane, what’s the point of spilling the blood of an innocent baby? You should take your revenge on me. Leave the innocent out of it.”
Shane looked at Derek arrogantly. “Well, if you really want this baby back unharmed, you have to do as I say. Take off your pants and get down on your knees in front of me. I want everyone to see how pathetic the president of Dere International can be.” This order was not only ridiculous but malicious.
It was obvious that Shane still held a grudge against us for what happened at Goldelta.
